Tim Thimmesch, assistance vicepresident for Facilities Services atGVSU, said the lack of sidewalksand lighting along 48th Street hasbeen a topic of discussion betweenuniversity administration and Al-lendale Township on multiple oc-casions. Jerry Alkema, AllendaleTownship supervisor, said road im-provements along 48th Street are
currently scheduled for 2015.Where Pierce Street is concerned,
Thimmesch said sidewalk and light-ing improvements have an estimatedcost of just under $1 million. Thereare no immediate plans for sidewalkconstruction there, he said, sinceconstruction is subject to fundingavailability at the university.
It kind of goes back to GrandValleys mission statement: Edu-
cating students to shape their lives,their professions and their societies,Sutton said. I think that Grand Val-ley should try and educate studentsto shape their societies meaningshape where they live. Having stu-dents say, We want sidewalks, wewant safety, we want to promotesustainability by being able to walkwithout being worried about get-
ting hit by a car, instead of havingto drive.
