ThoSE PUNK FolKFan-favourite Pommy-punk-gone-folker Frank Turner has announced his return to the country following his performances at a ridiculous amount of venues and festivals around the globe. The former Million Dead frontman will be joined by his band The Sleeping Souls for one show in Auckland at The Kings Arms on Tuesday 15 May, with The Broadsides announced as the support act. Tickets are available now through Under The Radar and Real Groovy.

A liTTlE goES A loNg WAYDunedin singer/songwriter Jo Little has announced a tour kicking off at the end of March and running through to the end of May, playing Dunedin, Invercargill, Wanaka, Nelson, Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Raglan, Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch and many more over the two months. This will be Little’s first solo tour as she celebrates the release of her new album Till the Blue Skies Come, and word is she’ll be heading to Australia later this year to continue to promote her album. Fellow Dunedinite Jared Smith (Soulseller/Ash & the Matadors) will be accompanying Jo on her New Zealand tour.

iNSiDE ThE SPhEREAmerican hip hoppers Atmosphere have announced two New Zealand shows in early May. The rock-influenced rappers will play their first show at Wellington’s San Fran Bath House on Wednesday 02 May followed by an Auckland show at the Studio on K Road on Thursday 03 May, and they’ve announced that the performances will feature their live band. Tickets are on sale now through 1-Night and iTicket.

RAVE oNUK comic Lenny Henry has announced two New Zealand shows. The highly-praised and much-loved comedian/actor/writer/host/etc will perform his latest show Cradle to Rave at Auckland’s ASB Theatre on Wednesday 27 June and in Wellington at the Michael Fowler Centre on Sunday 24 June. The comic’s newest stand-up focuses on music, which apparently he’s a bit of a fan of. Tickets are available from BuyTickets and Ticketek.

ChECK AND MATESAuckland favourites The Checks have announced an upcoming tour with fellow oh-niners Sherpa. The Gunpowder and Rain Tour will hit The Royal in Palmerston North, Wellington’s San Fran Bath House and The Cabana in Napier over the long Easter Weekend. Tickets are available now from Under The Radar or at the venues on the nights of performance.

NoThiNg bUT blUESIt’s been a while since we’ve heard from Auckland’s Dictaphone Blues, but now the trio are geared up to release their sophomore effort Beneath The Crystal Palace. We’re looking forward to see what the album (released on Monday 09 April) will sound like considering we’re looking at cameos from Princess Chelsea, Jonathan Brunette, Lawrence Arabia, Ryan McPhun and more. The band will start touring on Thursday 05 April in Christchurch at Dux Live before making their way to Port Chalmers, Napier, Wanganui, Wellington, Paekakariki, Hamilton and Auckland.

ThE bRoThERS gRiMMHere’s a nice impromptu treat – expats A Dead Forest Index have announced a brief return to New Zealand for two shows. The brotherly duo of Adam and Sam Sherry is now based in Melbourne but are bringing their somehow soft yet heavy folkesque songs back to Kiwi audiences. Auckland’s Wine Cellar will host the band along with Sharpie Crows and Seth Frightening on Friday 23 March before the two-piece heads to Wellington to play with The Body Lyre, Seth Frightening and All Seeing Hand on Friday 30 March.

blooDY RiPPERTim “Ripper” Owens (of Judas Priest and Iced Earth fame) has been announced to play two shows in New Zealand in the wake of his Australian tour. The hardcore icon will play his first show at Bodega in Wellington on Friday 01 June before heading up to Auckland to play at The Kings Arms on Saturday 02 June. Tickets are on sale now from Under The Radar.

FRiES FoR YoUR EYESAuckland’s DHDFD’s have announced some upcoming shows as they celebrate the release of their new album French Fries – which was recorded by none other than Kiwi king of thrash Kody Nielson. The album is being released through Hell Is Now Love, and the band will play three shows in Auckland, starting on Friday 30 March at Cassette before heading to Wellington and Wanganui.

Dame Edna Everage AKA Barry Humphries has announced her/his final show. After some 57 years, the Elton-esque getups will be hung up but not before four Auckland performances at The Civic in August.

Auckland’s Golden Dawn will host Uni and her Ukulele this Thu 22 Mar, and the undoubtedly pretty show is only a cheeky $5.

Christchurch singer/songwriter Tom Lark has announced a nationwide tour under the guise of a celebration of his single ‘All Night Long’. The solo artist will play in Dunedin, April, Christchurch and Wellington as he kicks off his tour on Wed 04 Apr.

Sad news came last week with the announcement that Wellington bar Happy was closing. Thanks for the happy (zing) memories.

Our best exports of recent years, Flight Of The Conchords have done us damn proud. After winning Oscars, Grammy Awards and the hearts of Americans, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have announced that they’ll be bringing their show back to where it all began.

It’s not the first time they’ve performed here – let’s not forget that they’ve toured around the country for many years –but it is the first time that towns big and small will get to see them in ages. Let’s hope that the songs and jokes won’t be too familiar and that they’ve got some special material they’ve been saving for the homeland.

While we’re more familiar with The Conchords than the solo career work of Bret and Jemaine, they have indeed been keeping busy with their own things. Voiceover work, cameo appearances, proper roles in larger Hollywood films and appearances in more festival favourite films – both the boys have plenty of work for themselves, so it’s a treat to see that the twosome are bringing everything back to the classics.

The Conchords will fly to Hastings, Hamilton, Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington, Dunedin, Queenstown, Nelson and Christchurch throughout June. Tickets go on sale Friday 23 March through Ticketmaster, Ticketek and BuyTickets. Check out flightoftheconchords.co.nz for more info.

In BrIef...Auckland’s Britomart Country Club is turning the heat up this Saturday to bring you some nice spice. The Rice & Beans Latin/Caribbean/ Brazilian Food & Music Extravaganza will be running throughout the day and will feature music influenced from all sides of Latin America, as well as local “immigrants” Silva MC, Jah Red Lion, The Turnaround, Latinaotearoa, Sandy Bay DJs, Samba Maracana and will have performances from the Brazilian Divas Dancers. It’s a melting pot of fancy culture with an appropriate amount of sexy. Good mix, Britomart. Rice & Beans is free and is family-friendly, so make a day of it with the kids.

Organisers from Red Bull Thre3Style have announced that is opening its doors for two wild card entries for the first time, meaning that amateur DJs now have the chance to showcase their steez and compete for the 2012 Red Bull Thre3Style New Zealand Champion title. Those interested can have a look for the event on Facebook, but you’ll need to do it before Friday 30 March. The winner of the Red Bull Thre3Style will represent NZ at the world finals.

You may have been lucky enough to see An Emerald City at some of their shows around the country over the past few weeks. Aucklanders should make the most of it at Silo Park on Saturday, as this will also be the last gig the band plays before they head their separate ways overseas. This will also be one of the last chances to get in some (hopefully) good weekend weather before Jack Frost comes to town, and there’s no good reason not to spend it gawking

at the brilliant performance that An Emerald City constantly deliver.

Waihi Beach Hotel is celebrating having one of the best summers in a while (despite the lack of sunshine) by holding a one off gig with Kiwi classics Hello Sailor. The special Easter show goes down on Saturday 07 April.

Some lame news was delivered last week when it was announced that The 5.6.7.8s had cancelled their two April shows. No word yet on whether there will be a rescheduled tour.

While we tend to have floating opinions about whether we still love zombie survival story The Walking Dead, we’re a little enthralled by the announcement that a five-episode game will be coming to Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, PC, Mac and iOS. Zombie games tend to be a bit more exciting than people looking worried for 44 minutes, then seeing zombies for two minutes.

FilM NEWS Award-winning comic book Y: The Last Man (which follows the Shakespearean tale of the last male alive on Earth) may finally be heading to the big screen. This idea is nothing new as New Line has been trying to green light the film for years, but nothing ever reached the production stage. Now the writers and producers of Human Target have been hired to script the tragedy-influenced comic. Whether it will be a film or television series we don’t know, but it’s good gossip.

ABC Family will be bringing a fifth Home Alone movie to audiences. The question is, when there’s no Macauley Culkin or Joe Pesci, do you care? Probably not.

If you’ve seen the house party flick Project X then you’ll know how crazy big-ass parties can be, and how they can get carried away. Sometimes that craziness can literally be fatal. While the film earned mixed reviews, teenagers certainly took a liking to it. So much so, there have been reports of kids breaking into newly built houses in Houston, causing significant damage, and citing Project X as inspiration. Unfortunately things got carried away when someone starting firing off rounds from a gun they brought to the party, and one party-goer ended up being shot and killed.

Why a four piece consisting of Larry Love, Aurora Dawn, Rock Freebase and Harpo Strangelove is called Alabama 3, being neither from Alabama nor made up of three people, is irrelevant. We’ve pointed out the needless nitpicky trivia, so now you can just enjoy it.

It’s the opening night of the new coming-of-age production with a whimsical difference. Dialogue With A Mannequin is the first solo show by Cyan Corwine, who has worked the rounds behind the scenes for the likes of The Jono Project on TV3 and the comedy stage show Kevin the Musical.

The country’s premier metal band is holding a fundraiser this Friday to help them get back into the studio to record their second album. And we all know how much we want another album out of these guys. Spook the Horses and Robin hold the support reins for this wild horse show.

If you’ve got a grandmother, get her tickets to this. Odds are she loves Will Martin and she’ll love you. Then she’ll tell her friends, her friends will like you, and they’ll try and set you up with their grandchild who’s probably a total babe and rich. Or you could go see Will Martin yourself. Whatever.

Eight solo albums in and Nathan Haines is still going. The king of jazz-cool and loved by everyone over 30 (not that people under 30 don’t know him, they just aren’t done growing up yet... arrested development and all that), Nathan will be celebrating his new album The Poet’s Embrace.

Would Christchurch be the country’s home of rock? Like, classic stadium rock. Wellington’s got the alt-market covered, Dunedin is grunge city, and Auckland’s just a melting pot of everything, so let’s call The Garden City the home of rock anthems. It’s fitting, then, that The Exponents play there this Friday.

Legendary punk poet John Cooper Clarke is bringing his unique verse to the Dunedin Fringe Festival for one night. He’s savvy, he’s offensive in all the right ways, he’s satirical, he’s political, and he’s pretty damn clever and funny. Martin Phillipps will also be performing a short set from the Chills’ back catalogue.

The Japanese bigger-than-big-beaters arrive in Dunedin for one night of unadulterated thrashy goodness. The five-piece synth-rockers will feel right at home in New Zealand where we get some of the best Japanese rock acts, so don’t miss your chance to see another fantastic live set from these Tokyo heavy hitters.

SAMMy’S REFUEL

People over 28 will know 21 Jump Street isn’t meant to be a comedy, but people under 24 will know that Jonah Hill is funny so you’ll watch him. People under 20 will think Channing Tatum is a dreamboat. People under 16 can’t see it.

Inspired by the true story of how his parents met, Ian Hughes’ Ship Songs takes you on an intrepid voyage of epic proportions. Transporting you to four continents across five centuries, the new production tells tales of fate on the high seas.

Another case of metaphors for reality television and the bloodlust that every human possesses. Yep, The Hunger Games might not be the freshest idea, but the critics have been wetting their Internet panties with excitement over this, so get in line.

Auckland’s favourite electro-cray-cray man with a name that’s easily findable on Google. $noregazZzm plays his final show on this mini-tour down in Dunedin with Waots. Make hump day down south a little... humpier down south. It’ll be $noregazZzmic.

What a naughty name for a night out. But we’re all for puns. They’re like the Chuck Lorre comedies of basic wordplay. Yeah, it’s an easy laugh, but it still got you laughing. Admit it, you chuckled at The Big Bang Theory. We saw you. Now shut up and watch this night of vaudeville entertainment.

“Let us pay one final bacchanalian tribute to the wonder of warmth and light! Let us cling to the good fortune of action before autumnal inertia takes hold! Let us party till they kick us out of the bar.” And with that, Urbantramper sums up their gig with Autumn Splendour and She’s So Rad as good as anybody.

Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Steve Lukather are some of the biggest names in the guitar world. You’ll be hard pressed to find some kind of Rolling Stone Top 100 list that doesn’t have at least one of these guys’ work on it. Whether it will be solo guitars or classic jams for hours on end, who knows?

When Sola Rosa, Cornerstone Roots, Paul Ubana Jones, Billy TK Jr, Swamp Thing and Ashley Knox come together to play at a vineyard in the sun in Hamilton and there’s a giveaway for someone to win a trip for two to the Fiji Jazz and Blues festival... well, it’s like a Saturday winery dream.

Our favourite small-town, small-minded, large-scale-scam-pulling idiots are performing two live shows in New Zealand this weekend. The TV show is always a hit, and the chance to see Ricky, Julian and Bubbles acting like the foolish wannabe criminal stuntmen they are live is one not to pass up.

There’s no time like Gaytime. Even if you don’t swing that way normally, garage rock is appealing to you, right? You don’t have to get into it straight away. Maybe you’re just lo-fi-curious? Screw, it, let’s make it a party and invite The Raw Nerves as well. You’ll be on top of things, don’t worry.

“These days it’s far too much effort for people to go to the theatre... so we decided to take the theatre to the people. The performance is free, because you really can’t expect to be paid for this kind of middle-class nonsense.” Middle-class nonsense is the best kind of nonsense.

We’re going on record here to say that An Emerald City is one of the greatest bands we’ve seen come out of the country in a long time. Any time you see them, all you can think is “I wish I was outside laying down watching and hearing this”. Well, dear hypothetical friend – wish granted.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash were pretty much rock’s first supergroup. Rock? Folk? Whatever. They’re a bunch of old classic kinda-hippies (playing their first gig ever at Woodstock) that sing songs that you don’t know the name of but have heard on your parents’ record player or on The Simpsons.

Alright, let’s be honest kids: we’ve all been looking forward to this more than Christmas. The culmination of years and years of work (it’s been half a decade since the flagship issue) is finally coming together – and it’s your work I’m talking about. Remember the time you clocked that annoying intergalactic reporter straight in the kisser? Or perhaps when you saved

Mass eFFeCt 3pC/ps3/xBox360

that doctor-in-training from the Rachni? Maybe even the part where you destroyed the cure for the disease that crippled an entire species’ ability to reproduce? All these actions you’ve made – from the smallest responses to the larger, morally-conflicting choices have rippled out to determine the galaxy’s fate.

Bioware’s had years to refine the game, and has finally

GamING

worked out most of the kinks for the final iteration of the series. The weapon system is full of customisations, but it’s nowhere as messy as the first game was. The ammo system is clear and simple with the thermal clips, and combat is about 10-15 per cent faster than the last few games. It’s a lot more hands-on and fast-paced, with sprinting no longer running off limited stamina. Shepard’s new abilities, such as tactical rolls and other evasive manoeuvres, are a particularly nice touch. Bioware’s design team has listened to our feedback, and answered accordingly.

They’ve gotten rid of the tedious bits like probing planets for resources and hacking via the omni-tool – it’s now down to the points that count, like blowing up baddies and pimping

out your gear. Extra perks are present for Kinect owners: voice control capabilities have been integrated to allow you to give verbal orders to your squad. “Liara, naked distraction!” hasn’t worked for me yet, but shouting (literally) for cover or directing grenades via speech adds a whole new element to the game.

Seriously, this game is pretty much perfect. The gameplay is top-notch, the storyline has brought me to tears on more occasions than I’d like to admit, and everything from the graphical detail right through to Golden Globe nominee Clint Mansell’s orchestral soundtrack will blow you away. The survival of all organic life is in your hands. So what are you going to do about it?

The Eastern’s live reputation is the stuff of legend, and their foot-stomping folk-blues is able to bring any room, pub, hall, backyard or arena to life. They’ve played ‘em all, even supporting the mighty Fleetwood Mac last year. Producer Ben Edwards’ studio The Sitting Room was lost to the earthquakes, but he managed to borrow enough equipment to set up a makeshift operation in a red-zoned house in Dallington to record this mammoth set. The Eastern can be compared to the likes of The Felice Brothers and Steve Earle, though on occasions Adam McGrath is guilty of straying perilously close to John Cougar Mellencamp territory. Thankfully Jess Shanks proves a welcome counterpoint, and although the double-disc Hope and Wire could be a little too much banjo, fiddle, and mandolin for one sitting, there’s delightful brass on ‘Let ‘em Know’, while ‘Town Like Here’ and the title track are as good as anything in their considerable back catalogue.

This album is like a warm bath for you to soak in. The Robert Glasper Experiment’s Black Radio delivers jazz-inspired rhythm and blues, with hip-hop undertones that envelop you in sweet satin luxury. ‘Afro Blue’ exhibits the tantalisingly saucy vocals of Erykah Badu (can this girl ever do wrong?); spirits will soar with ‘Cherish The Day’ featuring Lalah Hathway; and the sensual keyboard and smoky slow vocals on ‘Consequence Of Jealousy’ go down like Baileys on ice. Classic yet contemporary, this album is sophisticated to urban perfection. Play it to your Ma: she will like rap.

Play it at dinner: your friends will think you invented the concept of cool. Play it to your lady: she’ll probably steal the album. Let’s hope Glasper keeps up the pace with future albums, warming our hearts and hearths a little more.

i’ve always been a sucker for a good cover version, but suspicious of an entire album’s worth. The willfully eclectic Hallelujah Picassos have cobbled together a range of favourites recorded over the last 20 years, and their dub/thrash remains incomparable, if something of a mixed bag. The James Brown, Bo Diddley and Smokey Robinson tributes are all dementedly worthy, while the Gene Vincent and Greg Johnson tracks are pretty forgettable. Available as a digital release only, it’s easy to think this might have been better served as a bonus with the recently released Rewind The Hateman retrospective disc. That said, the extensive e-booklet is jam-packed with behind the scenes insight into each songs genesis, and hearing them deliver an angry and evil take on ‘Air’ by Head Like A Hole (who have previously made the Picasso’s ‘Hitskin’ entirely their own) is worth the price of admission alone.

WRITTEn BY CHRIS POLE

i hate live albums and i have a huge issue getting past accents, especially when it comes to mumbled English ones. So to be able to listen to Durham Lane and come out the other side with positive feelings surprised me. The 11-track album provides a retrospective of the Primmers’ work from the post-punk era, including demos and live recordings. There’s a huge risk involved in releasing demo versions of songs, but for Primmers, it has paid off immensely. The album is well-assembled, and gives a wonderful look at the Primmers sound. My only complaints are that the opener ‘You’re Gonna Get Done’ is a little on the long side for what it is, and as if it wasn’t repetitive enough, the next track ‘Funny stories’ sounds very much like a reprisal. Once you hit ‘Germ Free Adolescents’, however, the album takes off.

WRITTEn BY SEBASTIAn MACKAY

skip the sultana Bran – this breakfast is going to go down much easier. An up-tempo hip-hop album by rapper Chiddy and producer Noah Beresin, this debut release will get you moving. Flows are tight and creative, with reflections from the rapper’s rise through the music industry and rap scene. ‘Ray Charles’ is the second single release from the album, a rap about feeling as fresh as Ray himself. ‘Whatever We Want’ offers up a wicked bass line (DJs, take note). Clever and simple, it works its way right down to your dancing shoes. It’s very current, very hip, and some may say it’s a future sound, but in places can be predictable. Certainly a well worked album ready to attack radio waves without mercy.

The first Ghost Rider wasn’t particularly well received, so many wrote off its sequel’s chances the moment it was announced. However, with a surprisingly wicked trailer and Crank boys Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor at the helm, it had optimists like me wondering: could this be a supremely awesome action flick?

Nope. All those cool-looking set pieces are still present and cool-looking. Neveldine and Taylor’s signature ADD editing and frenetic camera work really add to the action sequences, as does the impressive CGI. Unfortunately, every action scene serves as an oasis, sparsely scattered in the desert of B-grade dullness.

The majority of the film is spent loitering around its devil-needs-a-new-human-

post-traumatic stress disorder (pTsD) is a nervous condition suffered by shell-shocked soldiers and sex-crime victims (among others), and it’s marbled through writer/director sean Durkin’s disordered debut. Even the title denotes the slipping identity of its heroine – poor Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), who flees John Hawkes’ creepy cult to reunite with her sister (Sarah Paulson) and her hubby (Hugh Dancy) at their lakehouse retreat.

Though she’s safe at last, it’s this anodyne aftermath that allows Martha’s memories of indoctrination and betrayal to bubble to the surface.

With no score aside from an occasional tinnitus ring, and its elusive, stream-of-consciousness storyline, the film has a woozy, disconnected feel that puts us squarely in Martha’s shoes. Sometimes Durkin strands her

vessel storyline, centering on a kid who is supposedly the son of Satan (proving to be the most boring child antichrist in history). Character connections are made but serve no point, a needless father-son subplot is shoehorned in and the lame-tastic dialogue has a very limited appeal. Whenever Nicolas Cage isn’t freaking out about something, he’s completely dreary-eyed and speaking in a monotone. It’s hard not to watch Spirit of Vengeance without giving it the penance stare.

It’s the same tired complaint: most of the cool stuff in the movie is in the trailer. What we’re left with is a largely uninteresting movie that simply refuses to give us the excitement we want.

in the centre of a massive frame like a malicious Terrence Malick; sometimes he shoots her from far too close. It’s a testament to Olsen’s stunning performance that it withstands such scrutiny, particularly when Martha’s motives remain obscure.

Besides his weak words and forceful personality, there are no explanations for Hawkes’ allure – Martha and her fellow lost souls seem desperate for a leader, however toxic – and the character’s ultimate fate is forever in question. If you’re expecting a traditional thriller or character study, expect to be disappointed. This is a troubling portrait of how fear and abuse leave their tentacles in everything they touch – and a haunting one at that.

STARRInG ROB HAMILL

documentary.The film essentially tells three

stories: the murder of Kerry Hamill in a Cambodian death camp in 1978, the present-day trial of Comrade Duch, one of the pinnacle overseers of death camp S-21, and a rundown of the Khmer Rouge regime that sought the death of millions.

Following Rob Hamill, the movie draws a great deal of sympathy through the Kiwi Olympian’s struggle for answers without ever making it feel exploitive.

The first half of the film slowly meanders around the three topics, never really drawing a tight focus until the halfway mark. From there, it blazes a concise trail that chars the heart, divulging into the depravity of the regime, Rob’s 30-year frustration over the ambiguity of his brother’s demise and the subdued relief felt when answers begin to surface. A moment involving Kerry’s ‘confession’ hit all the points home.

Some moments of the film seem misplaced (a key aspect into Rob’s childhood is strangely placed near the end) and it could use a tad more insight on the Khmer Rouge. Despite those minor setbacks, Brother Number One draws attention to relatively unknown subject matter with little flash and great poignancy.
