in Minersville, will be the 78th observance of this social which was begun in the 1930's to raise funds for our seminary. All parishioners are welcome to come to the meeting to give their ideas and suggestions as the planning begins for this traditional celebration of faith and ethnic heritage. The funds raised by this Deanery project, are credited towards each parish's seminary assessment on a prorated basis. Therefore the more chances our parish sells and the more ads our parish solicits, the greater seminary credit our parish receives. Since 1984, the parishes of the South Anthracite Deanery have raised over $550, 000 for the support of our St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Seminary.

This Sunday, June 24th we celebrate the Birth of John the Baptist.

He was discharged from the army in 1938 and Bishop Alexander Stoika ofMukachevo appointed him spiritual director and professor ar the eparchial seminary in UZhorod. When Bishop Stoika unexpEctedly died in 1943 during the middle of World War II, the Holy See named the thirtythree year old Father Romzha as bishop and administrator of the Eparchy. He was ordained bishop September 24, 1944 and one month later the state ofSubcarpathian Ruthenia was occupied by the Soviet armies.

On June 29, 1945 Czecholovakia was divided when the Soviet Union incorporated Sulx:arpathian" Ruthenia into the Soviet Union and renamed it Transcarpathia. At first, Bishop Romzha tried not to aggravate the Soviet authorities but when acts were commirred against the churches he protested. There followed many interrogations by Soviet authorities and church property closings and seizures. The Soviet position on religion was that they would have freedom of worship, not freedom of religion. The Soviet authorities tried to kill him by a staged automobile accident. Taken to the hospital in Mukachevo, he was murdered by poisoning October 31, 1947. The Ruthenian Church observes his memory on that day as well as on June 28th the day his relics were returned to the cathedral in Uihorod.
