CHAPLAIN’S

CORNER

1 Peter 1:21 (NRSV) 21 Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glo-ry, so that your faith and hope are set on God. In these last few months I have been quite busy. Lots of illnesses, injuries and deaths have

tions that will assure that 4 Unit continues to grow. Healthcare is still a hot topic, and we are in search of someone to take over Gary Siniff’s po-sition. While it will be hard to find someone with Gary’s knowledge, we need to fill this position. Gary’s expertise in insurance questions and problems will surely be missed. Director John Gallagher, Ohio Police and Fire Pension Board has agreed to attend our August meeting. He will be there to discuss some of the recent changes to our healthcare. I am asking all of our members to be respectful to the director and act with decorum. I have learned while at-tending the healthcare meetings that they are working to keep our health insurance as long as possible. I may have stated that our insurance was going away. I hope that it is not. I believe that we will have insurance, but it will be differ-ent. The details are being worked on at the Pen-sion Board. Our insurance is not guaranteed. I do feel that the Pension Board is working for our best interest. If they do nothing, we are surely doomed, We are not the only ones facing

healthcare issues, almost everyone across this nation is caught up with this same concern. The picnic will soon be upon us and as always we need help with gifts for the raffle. Tex Ben-nett is already out shaking the bushes for dona-tions. But we cannot have a raffle without your help. Please get involved! We also have the Ohio Fire and EMS Expo coming to Columbus in September. I am looking for several members to help 4 Unit at the Expo. We will have a booth set up to hand out infor-mation about 4 Unit. More details to come. Fraternally, Gary A. Church

President’s Report Greeting to everyone, I would like to thank every one of the 140 people that attended our banquet this year. This year’s honoree was our Chaplain, Larry Baker. Larry’s family was also in attendance which in-cluded his son and grandson (both in the fire ser-vice) along with his wife and granddaughter and more friends and family. Congratulation to Lar-ry, and thanks for all you continue to do for our members and their families. This year we changed the caterer and believe the dinner was much better. Bob Elflein was the Chairman of the Banquet and it was about as seamless as you could get. A few small prob-lems to work on for next year. Thanks to Bob and his wife (we all know she did most of the work) for a job well done. We have so many great people that help out and get involved in the banquet every year. Thanks to everyone that helped! At our June meeting the election of officers was held. I am pleased to announce that we have several members take positions on the Executive Board. Bernie Cattrell is our new Treasurer. He retired from Washington Township. He also worked for Clinton Twp. as a Lieutenant/Paramedic. Bernie’s resume shows that he was very involved during his career and he is quali-fied for this position. He will be working with Jerry Mason over the next few months to learn this difficult position. Mike Peery asked to be replaced as Sgt.at Arms. Mike has served us well for over 10 years in this position as well as working with Barry Tresner on the banquets. Mike’s position as Sgt.at Arms was assumed by Bill Hanf. That left us needing a new Trustee, Bill had held that position for 3 years. Gary Wells, one of our newest members, stepped to the plate and is our newest Trustee. Gary retired a few months ago from Columbus Fire. Gary was very active with the department and Local 67. He was our go to guy at the union hall and was instrumental in setting up the Picnics and the Banquets at Station 67. Gary is a hands on guy and a great new addition to the Executive Board. Thanks to everyone, and those that are taking a break after many years of dedicated ser-vice to 4 Unit. And to those for accepting posi-

occurred. I hear quite often from 4 Unit guys – “Its no fun getting old.” And sometimes there is a very strong adjective in there that I will not print. I can heartily agree that the aging process often has new challenges for us. So we look to the word HOPE. We can (and should) hope in lots of things. We hope the pill the doctor gives us will help. We hope the ther-apist knows what she is doing and our ambula-tion will improve. We hope our buddies don’t forget we ever were their friends. But we also seek an eternal hope. Peter gives us that in a short sentence. God raised Jesus from the dead!! Our trust in this same God gives us faith and hope. Note that God gives even the faith. The Holy Spirit comes to us and grants that faith and along with it comes the hope we desire. Do not lose hope. Do not lose faith. Cling to the promises. See you at the meetings and pic-nic – I HOPE. Chaplain, Larry Baker

newsletter, Amount $28.00. Jack Schumacher, to Pac Fund, Amount $28.00 Meeting adjourned by President. G. Church.,

All of these ended badly depending on your point ot view, but the worst of them, the worst one yet is The Central Ohio Retired Firefighters honoring their chaplain, a retired Fire Lt., a dep-uty Fire Marshall, and a Lutheran minister by having a dinner emcee by a Retired F.F. who has a record of 12 years of catholic education and a church going member of one of the larger catho-lic parishes of the city, who also has a weird im-agination, some strange stories, and unusual out-look on life. How this ends remains to be seen. As I admit I don’t know some of the ususal things of Larry’s life. I have asked some of Lar-ry’s better? Friends? to assist me. I would like to introduce them. First, President Gary Church. After serving years in the United States Air Force, Larry was hired by the Upper Arlington Fire Division. His first assignment was Station 71 on E-71 under the leadership of Lt.Ralph Dowler. At the same station Larry also rode on Squad 71. He was among the first classes of medic to be trained at OSU. He known as one of the “60 Hour Wonders.” Larry served 6 years as a Deputy Fire Mar-shall and was one of the earliest trained in the Juvenile Fire Setter Program. He was also a charter member and founder of NAS-T (Northwest Arson Strike Team) Larry received an Associates Degree in Ap-plied Science at Columbus Technical Institute. During his career he worked at all three UAFD stations. When promoted to Lt. he was assigned to Ladder 72. He retired from that posi-tion. He was an Ohio certified fire instructor and taught many regional fire schools as well as re-

Chaplain, Larry Baker

My name is Thomas Rubadue, Ret. F.F. I retired in 1996. I would like to introduce our Honoree, Larry Baker who will lead us in pray-er. As I stand here before you to night, I think of the unusual things that have happened since our last dinner. Things that people of our gener-ation thought they would never hear of, let alone see. For instance, the first woman ever to be nominated to run for the Presidency of the Unit-ed States of America. She lost. The Cleveland Indians leading three games to one over the Chicago Cubs in the World Se-ries. They lost. The new number two Engine House being built on the exact same place as the old number two Engine House. When the old was still in good enough shape to rent our as a Party House.

cruit classes under the Franklin County Firefight-ers Assoc. Larry completed a Master’s of Divinity De-gree at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Bexley and went on to serve two congregations, as hos-pice chaplain and interim pastorates. Next up to the rostrum is Scott Skeldon. Thank you for allowing me to speak!! Tom said if I could get 10-15 minutes and a little humor he would be happy.. I would have a tough time roasting a man of the cloth, so I will just talk about “Sudsy,” from the early years. For us at WJ (West Jefferson), we have al-ways called him Sudsy, and contrary to popular belief, it was not because he likes to take soapy baths. Larry loved his BEER and a good (or bad) cigar. I am sure he mixes that with his communion wine when he has to. The Baker family has been a staple in the WJ community for many years. They have ran suc-cessful businesses and been active in many com-munity groups. We are lucky that Larry did not go over to the dark side and be a police officer, as after high school he hung around the police department. He ran radio and rode a cruise. He did not carry a gun or a badge, but he got to see all the sides of law enforcement. It happened that the fire department was in the same building as the police station and in fact there was a fire phone at the console and runs were dispatched by the police dispatcher. That was his first insight into the fire service He knew some of the volunteer firefighters. Soon he started hanging out at the fire station. Soon he was spending more time with the firefighters than police officers.

The biggest obstacle he had was that he had to be 21 years old to join the fire department and he was not old enough. The only thing he could do at the time was operate the radio. Along with his good friend Ace Forrest, he spent countless hours at the station and even going to fires in their own vehicles, but could only observe. Finally they were granted probationary sta-tus, but were not allowed to drive any vehicles, but otherwise he could do all that any other member could. He then spent the next 27 years as a volunteer for JTFD. In the late 70’s and early 80s, several young guys came on the department, with me being one of them. He was good enough to take us under his wing and show us the ropes and taking us with him when he instructed at training fires. It was quite fun for us young guys. But at times we would over step our bounds as youngsters do, and open our mouths and in-sert our feet!!! At a training fire, the house was quite in-volved in fire and lots of smoke was coming out most openings. I approached as Suds got his gear on and said to the Chief, “I might have spo-ken too harshly and got YOU in some trouble.” I inquired and found that as the fire had grown the chief had ordered everyone out. I had then said something to the effect that this was bullshit (BS) and if Sudsy (my nick-name that all the guys called me) was here we’d put that out with an inch line. The chief said that when I arrived he would like to see me do just that. I looked at him, then the house and then back to Scott. There was no way! Yet I said, “Well, let’s go for it.” We took the inch line and ascended the stairwell, ONE slow step at a time. It was indeed hot and tough. We made it to the third step from the top when we decided to re-treat. We sure had fun trying though. It seemed like Suds was always bailing me out, as Larry and I were egressing another burn-ing building once, my helmet came off, bounced down the stairs and rolled into a side room. As things were getting quite hot I exited the build-ing and he went and got my helmet. This was of course embarrassing and he never wanted me to mention it. Larry was not always politically correct, on

a squad run, he arrived to find Jeff Hockenbery in the drivers seat, and a young man unknown to me in the back. I got in the in-charge seat and told this stranger “to get out , he could not just walk in here and go a run.” He promptly exited the squad and Jeff looked over at me and said, “Why’d you do that?” I told him only firefight-ers could ride this rig and Jeff then informed me that he had been hired on I said, “Well why did-n’t he say so?” He opened the door and told him to get back in. Some of his leadership on the fire ground was not always in the training books. There was a barn fire mutual aid to Plain City. It was extremely cold and the barn was pretty much destroyed. After some futile water slinging onto the fire Larry decided to do some-thing more productive. Numerous little pigs were running about so I enlisted the aid of FF Scott Skeldon to help me round them up. It was no doubt a humorous sight to see two firefight-ers in full gear slipping and sliding in the mud after squealing pigs. As we all know Larry is a very caring indi-vidual, and he has instilled that in his family as his children are all successful in their chosen fields and he is proud of them and his grandchil-dren. But I am sure he’s especially proud that both his son and grandson have chosen to follow him into the fire service, and a son Ross as a Lt. for WTFD and grandson Caleb is a CFD Firefight-er. Along with his Chaplain duties with 4 Unit, he regularly rides on 2 unit at PTFD 241’s, and is their department chaplain also. And as an update on those bunch of kids he mentored, all became career FF’s, with 3 Chiefs, 2 Captains and several Lt’s. Again, Thank You for the opportunity to speak about our friend Pastor Baker, and thank

Meeting at Pension board on 6/27/17 was at-tended by Gary Church and Charlie Burkhart. It was as confusing as ever and we will keep you informed as new information develops. Director John Gallagher, of the Ohio Police and Fire Pen-sion Board will be at our August meeting to an-swer questions about healthcare changes. The new Treasurer Bernie Cattrell will have several meetings with Jerry Mason. This will help assure a smooth transition of the treasurer’s duties. This is a reminder that the OAPFF member-ship is not needed. They are currently sending out applications to 4 Unit members. Please do not get confused, this is NOT a 4 Unit applica-tion. The 4 Unit dues are separate and we will start collecting our dues in October. Each year the membership is asked to pay 4 Unit dues along with the PFRO dues. The PFRO dues are then forwarded to the PFRO lump sum with the list of paying members. Please pay your PFRO dues thru us. In September the Ohio Fire/EMS Expo will be downtown at the convention center. We usually have a booth there but couldn’t find any current information on their website for the 2017 Expo. We are looking for members to man our booth during the expo. Contact information will be in every issue of our newsletter for Terry Hetzer. Anyone who has a change of address, phone number or email ad-dress, please let Terry know so we can keep our records updated. VP Report: Nothing to report

UNWELCOME VISITOR

The Fire Museum suffered substantial damage on Easter Sunday night when a motorist drove through one of the front bay doors and crashed into the gift shop counter. According to local news and po-lice reports one person drove through the door at 11:19 p.m. The south bay door and a portion of the gift shop counter were destroyed. The driver fled the scene. Also damaged was the 1915 Ford Model T fire truck which sustained a hole in the

radiator and several dents and scratch-es.

Right: our “new” temporary front door. These pictures and article from Museum’s “The Bell Tower.”

Philosopher: Just read that 4,153,237 people got married last year, not to cause any trouble, but shouldn’t that be an even number: You’re not fat you’re just….easier to see.
