positive mental health and support people to recover from mental ill health.
Our vision for Scotland
We envisage a society where people with mental health problems expect recovery and are
accepted, supported and have the resources to fulfil their potential. To achieve this vision our
Strategic Plan sets out five aims (RPIII):
Recovery - To ensure that all mental health services and activities are hopeful, personalised and recovery focused.
People - To ensure a highly valued, skilled and involved workforce.
Innovation - To develop, support and provide innovative responses that promote recovery, social inclusion and citizenship for people with mental health problems.
Influence - To promote mental health and wellbeing in communities by influencing; policy makers, funders and others.
Improvement - To ensure quality and continuous improvement in all business processes to achieve our mission.
RPIII is supported by objectives and a results and monitoring framework. As part of this
framework, Penumbra services compile an Annual Review which summarises the work
undertaken to meet the five key aims, to achieve our mission, and to realise our vision for
society. This Annual Review is based around the RPIII structure, with sections for Recovery,
People, Innovation, Influence, and Improvement.

About the service
The Supported Accommodation Service at Rosemount Terrace, established in 1995 provides
recovery focused support to five people and is located in the residential area of Rosemount
in Aberdeen. Referrals to the Service come via the Resource Allocation Panel at RCH and
any new supported people, are phased into the service at a pace which they are happy with.
This involves an initial visit, to meet all the current residents and staff, an overnight stay to
familiarise them with the house and immediate environment; and a weekend stay to give the
person confidence on the lead up to moving in on a permanent basis. A six week review
takes place in collaboration with Care Management to ensure that the person is fully
integrated into the Service and that for them, things are going well. Regular reviews are
scheduled throughout the year and the team work collaboratively with the Multi disciplinary
teams connected with each person to ensure that we are providing a personalised service.
Types of support provided
By adopting a strengths based approach, we support people to make informed choices about
their daily living and their living environment.
Practical Support – We provide support with life/home skills, planning and attending
appointments, dealing with correspondence, including budget setting and managing
money and healthy meal planning and general wellbeing.
Social Support - Encouraging people to engage with their local and wider
communities and access ordinary resources and activities. Maintaining or building
relationships with family and friends.
Emotional Support - Focusing on building trust, developing positive relationships
within the Service, increased self management and resilience to strains and
stresses of daily living.

Groups and Activities
Monthly, Involvement Meetings inform the fun activities and social events that have taken
place at Rosemount Terrace over the past year. Supported people identify the activities that
they wish to participate in over the course of the year, and plan ahead as to when these
events will take place. In the last year, this has included ‘Arts & Crafts’, a ‘Halloween and
Christmas Party, all held at the Service.
For the Halloween Party, the people we support took an active role in planning and
purchasing the materials, they designed and made the invitations that were sent out to all the
other Penumbra services in the North area, and fancy dress was optional. For the party
itself, the house was transformed; Cobwebs and spiders were placed around the house and
seasonal decorations and artwork bedecked the walls and of course we already had our own
black cat called ‘Cookie’. On the day of the party people carved a large pumpkin lantern
which took pride of place in the lounge window.
.
The party itself, incorporated arts and crafts activities which included, colouring ceramic cats,
bats and sessions of face painting and scary make up. Some of our guests chose to dress up
for the occasion, which included Witches, Wizards, Skeletons and Zombies. The musical
playlist for the party consisted of spooky tunes and energetic tunes from The Cramps and
The Damned. The party was a great success with some great feedback.
The activities hosted by Rosemount Terrace has provided opportunities for people from all
services that we support in the North to come together and spend time, make new friends, in
an informal and relaxed environment, which provides a perfect opportunity to widen their
social networks.
The residents and staff at the service have enjoyed the excitement of planning and hosting
the events over the past year and hope to schedule more activities in the year ahead.

Recovery
Recovery story Phil, a supported person who lives at Rosemount Terrace attended Branching Out, this year.
Branching Out is a structured 12 week Eco therapy programme of woodland activities.
This also allows all participants to work towards their 'John Muir' award for Conservation.
"I really enjoyed going to Branching Out, I liked travelling out of town in the mini bus with the
other people who went and I felt that I got on well with them. The people were friendly and
spoke to me every week."
Phil identified activities that he had enjoyed throughout his attendance and engagement with
the programme. Activities were varied in their content and focused upon different themes
each week.
Phil’s I.ROC graph from August 2017 shows evidence of how attending Branching Out
increased his results in relation to Social Network and Valuing Myself.
“As a result of completing Branching Out, I would
maybe like to join a walking or outdoor activities
group in future”

Recovery story
From her I.ROC Susan told us that she wanted to focus upon introducing some new physical
activities into her life as she wished to increase her general fitness levels. Increased levels
of exercise and activity, goes hand in hand with Fit150, the Penumbra initiative to introduce
exercise into people’s lives without being cumbersome or onerous.
Susan did some research and was supported to access some activities in her local
community and chose to attend an Aqua Aerobics Group and a Chair Yoga class.
"I go to the swimming pool and do some exercises in the water, it's nice and warm in the
pool and the teacher encourages me. I think that doing the exercises has helped me to get
a bit fitter and I feel more confident in the water."
"I've been going along to a Chair Yoga class every Tuesday at the local community centre.
I do different exercises and I use a block under my feet. I've been doing some stretching
and moving around in a healthy way. It has also made me thoughtful and I find it relaxing
too. The teacher is very kind and patient and it's a small group of people which suits me."
"I've been walking to my groups every week, I have attended a friends group each Monday
at Debenhams Café in town, I've also gone to a Woman's group every Wednesday and an
Over 60's group every Friday morning. I've made some good friends at the groups and
sometimes I've been away for the day on trips people."
"I went on a trip recently to Montrose with my Key Worker, I chose to go there because I
hadn't been to Montrose for a few years and I wanted to visit there again. The journey on
the bus was peaceful and I enjoyed it. I went shopping for some new clothes and went for
lunch to a nice café."
"I also went on a trip to Huntly to the Falconry centre and saw birds of prey, my favourite
was a baby owl, it lovely to see it so close to me."
“The aqua aerobics has given me confidence and I
want to go swimming over the summer months ”

People
Staff
The Rosemount Terrace staff team consists of a Support Manager and 5 Recovery Workers.
Predominantly a female staff team, with a mix of ages, the Service benefits from an
experienced team, who have many years experience in the Social Care sector.
Training
The staff team have completed a wide range of core training courses over the past year from
the Penumbra Learning & Development Schedule and have also accessed RBS Mentor e-
learning and the newly created Penumbra e-learning platform. Each member of staff has
kept a Learning Log as a record of their training, in line with the SSSC requirements, and as
a reflective tool, staff have kept notes of learning outcomes and skills that they have
developed as a result of attending and or completing the training online.
All staff members have been encouraged to feed back to their colleagues at team meetings
regarding any training courses that they have attended; so that skills and points of learning
can be shared and discussed.
New staff have particularly benefited from the new Penumbra e-learning with regards to the
courses that are provided and providing a firm foundation and knowledge base of Penumbra.
This includes About Penumbra, Penumbra I.ROC and also one about ‘Our Approach’.
We have one Recovery Worker who is in the final stages of completing SVQ Level 3 in
Social Care and that means that the whole staff team will be qualified.
SSSC registration
The manager is fully qualified having attained SVQ Level IV in Care, and the Leadership and
Management in Care Award (LMC). All staff, are registered with the SSSC in line with
requirements for staff working in a registered Care Home, also one member of staff is
registered with the General Teaching Council (GTC). Staff, are also updating their Post
Registration and Learning Log (PRTL) to ensure they comply with SSSC requirements.

Innovation
The Service has recently had the opportunity to engage with ‘Branching Out’, a programme
of structured Eco-Therapy activities in a woodland setting, which was run jointly by ‘Earth for
Life’ and the ‘Forestry Commission’. This involves participants in a 12 week programme of
activities, making people more aware of their natural surrounding environment and the
benefits that this can have for them getting out into green spaces, even if this was in the city
centre. Supported people from Rosemount Terrace have attended the past 2 groups, in the
summer of 2017 and spring 2018.
The programme involved students in healthy walks, conservation activities, shelter building,
environmental art and learning about nature and wildlife identification. The programme
enhanced skills for people in team working, decision making, self confidence and physical
activity. Participants on completion of the course ‘Graduate’ if they have completed 80% of
the course and if they have diligently met the four challenges of Discover, Explore, Conserve
and Share, if so, they receive the John Muir Award also. All of our participants did. The
positive impact this has had upon people is that they have gained new skills, they have
improved their Social Network, whilst taking part in exercise and activity, and since
graduating, they have been actively involved in maintaining the garden at Rosemount
Terrace.
Over the past year the Service has provided a learning opportunity for an HNC student from
North East College in Aberdeen. This provided the team with an opportunity to coach and
mentor the student in recovery focused support, which has been an invaluable opportunity
for the student.
"Working alongside everyone at Rosemount has been an extremely rewarding experience
for me. Staff, have been very supportive and I have felt able to put my own learning into
practice. Supported people have all been open and friendly and have seemed happy to
work with me. I couldn't have wished for a better placement."
POWWOWs
The use of POWWOWS in the Service was discussed as part of the Quality Assurance
Framework (QAF) process and it was agreed that there are great benefits to supported
people from using the workshops in terms of improving their wellbeing and setting goals for
the future. We have planned POWWOWS over the course of the next year. We are going
to kick these off with ‘Realising your Potential’, ‘Hopefulness’ and ‘Achieve your Goals’.

Influence
Celebrating Recovery Event
Penumbra services in the North Area hosted a ‘Celebration of Recovery’ Event at the Lemon
Tree in March 2018. The event was attended by Penumbra Directorate, key partners and
stakeholders who were invited from all across the North Area. The event was an opportunity
for Penumbra to showcase the work that we do and to share stories of Recovery with our
invited guests.
The morning session consisted of stage presentations which were informative, fun and
interactive, getting the audience up and moving from their seats; also hearing first hand,
personally told stories of recovery and presentations which included short films. The
afternoon session was largely an interactive session with POWWOW tasters, and
Conversation Café’s; tables at which the audience could actively engage around three given
topics.
This included ‘Art and Recovery’ a discussion on how therapies and practices such as
Mindfulness can benefit mental health. Peer Work and how this can instil Hope within people
who are working towards their own recovery, and finally ‘Making Recovery Real’ which was
hosted by our own staff member and the Scottish Recovery Network, promoting the work
that the SRN had been focusing on in the past year.
The workshops were fun and engaging and had an emphasis upon how people can use
tools and activities in their Self Management that can lead to improved mental wellbeing and
recovery. The atmosphere throughout the day was relaxed and informal, feedback received
from those who took part, was very positive and was hailed to have been a great success.

Improvement
Care Inspectorate
The service was inspected by the Care Inspectorate on 1st June 2017.
The inspection went very well and the service was awarded grades of 6 (Excellent) for the
third year in succession. This has been achieved by the continuous development of the
service and by making improvements each year.
It was noted in the inspection report that the service provides support to people to be as
independent as possible while being able to provide support when required.
The report highlighted good practice in relation to health promotion within the service.
It was also noted that the manager and staff came across as motivated and keen to provide
a high quality service.
Quotes from staff:
“We completely focus on the person”.
Staff spoke highly of the training they had received and also their plans for future training.
“The medication training has been very good”
Quality Assessment Framework (QAF)
The service was visited by Julie Rutherford, Quality & Improvement Manager for Penumbra
on 23rd November 2017. The purpose of the QAF was to assess and score the work that
we do in line with our core strategic objectives, RPIII.
The results of the QAF were positive, especially in relation to the staff team and how they
support people at the service, during the visit, the assessor identified areas of practice that
can be further improved. These areas have been noted and set down in a development
plan, which we will use to work through the following year to improve our Service.
