• Steadily growing sector: area doubled in relation to 2002 and increased by 63% in decade 2007 – 2016

• Currently about 185.000 farms across Europe, trend increasing while consolidation of conventional agricultural holdings in EU-28

• Value of organically grown products doubled in the last decade: more than 30 bn€ in 2016

Challenges for the organic sector in Europe

• The average share of organic farmland is at about 6% and differs significantly depending on sector and countries (e.g. 21% in AT, 14% IT, 7% DE, 3% NL)

• Consumption of organic products is unevenly distributed across the EU

• Increases in area devoted to organic farming slowing down and in some Member States the area is even declining

• Organic production is lagging behind the growth of the organic market (e.g. from 2012 – 2016 sales of organic products grew by about 50% while organic farmland only grew by 19%).

• Consumer demand to be met by imports: need for equivalence in standards

• New organic regulation resulting in increased need for organic seed, organic varieties and other inputs
