Measuring the Digital Economy: A New Perspective

JAPAN HIGHLIGHTS

The Japanese economy continues to rely on a vibrant ICT manufacturing sector and, despite

the economic crisis, Japan information industries have not lost ground in terms of value added,

employment and R&D, as compared to other OECD economies.

Japan has deployed extensive high-speed broadband infrastructures and, like a few other

OECD countries, currently faces some important challenges for future ICT-driven growth,

notably that of stimulating the uptake and effective use of the infrastructure by businesses and

individuals at work, at school and in public administrations.
