The H.C.F. of two or more numbers is the greatest number that divides each one of them exactly. The least number which is exactly divisible by each one of the given numbers is called their L.C.M. Two numbers are said to be co-prime if their H.C.F. is 1. H.C.F. of fractions = H.C.F. of numerators/L.C.M of denominators L.C.M. of fractions = G.C.D. of numerators/H.C.F of denominators Product of two numbers = Product of their H.C.F. and L.C.M. ________________ PERCENTAGES : If A is R% more than B, then B is less than A by R / (100+R) * 100 If A is R% less than B, then B is more than A by R / (100-R) * 100 If the price of a commodity increases by R%, then reduction in consumption, not to increase the expenditure is : R/(100+R)*100 If the price of a commodity decreases by R%, then the increase in consumption, not to decrease the expenditure is : R/(100-R)*100 ________________ PROFIT & LOSS : Gain = Selling Price(S.P.) Cost Price(C.P) Loss = C.P. S.P. Gain % = Gain * 100 / C.P. Loss % = Loss * 100 / C.P. S.P. = (100+Gain%)/100*C.P. S.P. = (100-Loss%)/100*C.P. If CP(x), Gain(y), Gain%(z). Then y = x*z/100. [Same in case of Loss] _________________ RATIO & PROPORTIONS: The ratio a : b represents a fraction a/b. a is called antecedent and b is called consequent. The equality of two different ratios is called proportion. If a : b = c : d then a, b, c, d are in proportion. This is represented by a : b :: c : d. In a : b = c : d, then we have a* d = b * c. If a/b = c/d then ( a + b ) / ( a b ) = ( c + d ) / ( c d ). _________________ TIME & WORK : If A can do a piece of work in n days, then As 1 days work = 1/n If A and B work together for n days, then (A+B)s 1 dayss work = 1/n If A is twice as good workman as B, then ratio of work done by A and B = 2:1 ____________________ PIPES & CISTERNS : If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours, then part of tank filled in one hour = 1/x If a pipe can empty a full tank in y hours, then part emptied in one hour = 1/y If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours, and another pipe can empty the full tank in y hours, 3. Page 3 of 322 then on opening both the pipes, the net part filled in 1 hour = (1/x-1/y) if y>x the net part emptied in 1 hour = (1/y-1/x) if x>y ____________________ TIME & DISTANCE : Distance = Speed * Time 1 km/hr = 5/18 m/sec 1 m/sec = 18/5 km/hr Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x kmph and an equal distance at y kmph. Then, the average speedduring the whole journey is 2xy/(x+y) kmph. __________________ PROBLEMS ON TRAINS : Time taken by a train x metres long in passing a signal post or a pole or a standing man is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x metres. Time taken by a train x metres long in passing a stationary object of length y metres is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x+y metres. Suppose two trains are moving in the same direction at u kmph and v kmph such that u>v, then their relative speed= u-v kmph. If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the same direction at u kmph and v kmph, where u>v, then time taken by the faster train to cross the slower train = (x+y)/(u-v) hours. Suppose two trains are moving in opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph. Then, their relative speed= (u+v) kmph. If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph, then time taken by the trains to cross each other = (x+y)/(u+v)hours. If two trains start at the same time from two points A and B towards each other and after crossing they take a and b hours in reaching B and A respectively, then As speed: Bs speed= (b : a) _________________ SIMPLE & COMPOUND INTERESTS : Let P be the principal, R be the interest rate percent per annum, and N be the time period. Nostro accounts are usedto facilitate settlementofforeignexchange and trade transactions. The term is derivedfromthe Latin word for "ours." Conversely, accountsthat are heldby the domesticbank in its home country for foreignbanks are calledvostro accounts, derivedfrom the Latin word for "yours." For example,a U.S. bank may have nostro accounts with one or more Canadian banks. These accounts will be denominatedinCanadian dollars, whichenablesefficientsettlementof transactions that are Canadian dollar denominated.Nostroaccounts also minimize the exposure of the U.S.bank to undue exchange rate risk. (2) 'VostroAccount' The account that a correspondentbank, usuallylocatedin the UnitedStates or UnitedKingdom, holdson behalfof a foreignbank. A vostro account is one in which the domestic bank (fromthe point ofview of the currency in which the account is held) acts as custodianor manages the account ofa foreigncounterpart. Also knownas a loro account. For instance,if a Spanish life insurance company approaches a U.S.bank to manage fundsin an account for the Spanish life insurer'sbehalf, the account would be deemeda vostro account of the insurer. The term vostro is Latin for "yours," thus whentranslated literally, itmeans "your account." (3) NRE Account: In this account rupee denominationscan be maintained. The account can openedinthe names of two or more non-residentindividualsprovidedall the account holdersare personsof Indian nationalityor origin.Amount heldin the NRE account are freelyrepatriable and you cannot send moneyby any other meansexceptas remittance from abroad or transfer from another NRE account. NRE account may be in the form of savings, current, recurringor fixeddepositaccounts. Such accounts can be openedonlyby the non-residenthimself andnotthrough the holderof the 13. Page 13 of 322 power ofattorney. Taxation Accrued interestincome and balances heldin NRE accounts are exemptfrom Income tax and Wealthtax, respectively Currency Account holderis exposedto the fluctuations inthe value of INR. Interestrates Banks are free to determine the interestrates ofsaving's and term depositsofmaturity of one year and above. Interestrates offeredby banks on NRE depositscannot be higherthan those offeredby themon comparable domesticrupee deposits. (4) NRO Account: NRO accounts may be opened/ maintainedalso in the form of rupee denominationcouldbe in the form of current, savings, recurring or fixeddepositaccounts. The account can be heldjointly by residents.Youcan transfer moneyinto an NRO account from any account - evenother individualsresidinginindiacan transfer moneyinto an NRI's NRO account. Repatriation Not repatriable exceptfor the following: i) current income ii) up to USD 1 (one) millionperfinancial year (April-March),for any bonafide purpose, out of the balances inthe account, e.g., sale proceedsof assetsin India acquired by way of purchase/ inheritance / legacy inclusive ofassetsacquired out of settlementsubjectto certainconditions. Currency Account holderis exposedto the fluctuations,in the value of INR to the extentof interest amount. Interestrates Banks are free to determine theirinterestrateson savingsdepositsunderOrdinary Non-Resident (NRO) Accounts. However, interestrates offeredby banks on NRO depositscannot be higherthan those offeredby them on comparable domesticrupee deposits.Tax is deductedat source inNRO accounts, unlike NRE accounts. However, funds from NRO to NRE accounts can be transferred,vice- versa. (5) 'Suspense Account' In accounting, the sectionof a company's bookswhere unclassifieddebitsandcreditsare recorded. The suspense account temporarilyholds unclassifiedtransactionswhile a decisionis beingmade as to their classification.Transactions in the suspense accountwill still appear inthe general ledger, givingthe company an accurate indicationof how much moneyit has. In investing,a suspense account is a brokerage account where an investorplacescash or short- term securitiestemporarilywhile decidingwhere toinvestthem for a longerterm. 14. Page 14 of 322 Suppose a doctor'soffice has two patients namedBob Smith, each with an outstanding balance of $100. One day at lunch, one of the Bobs stops by the office to pay his bill and leaves$100 cash and his name with the receptionist.Unfortunately, the receptionistdoesnotask for hisaddress or account numberand whenthe office bookkeeperreturnsfrom lunch, she doesn'tknow which Bob Smith has paid his bill. The bookkeeperwouldclassifythe transaction in the suspense account until she could determine whichpatientto attribute the $100 to. (6) 'Call DepositAccount' A bank account for investmentfundsthat offersthe advantages of both a savingsand a checking account. A call depositaccount, like a checking account, has no fixeddepositperiod, provides instant access to funds and allowsunlimitedwithdrawalsand deposits.Like a savings account, a call depositaccount pays interest. The rate of interesta call depositaccount pays dependson the amount of moneyin the account, a systemcommonly referredto as banded interestrates. Also, differentcurrenciesmayearn differentinterestrates.Depositorsmay have to meeta minimum balance thresholdbefore theyearn any interest. Call depositaccounts allowinvestorsto depositand withdraw fundsin several currencies, which commonly include the U.S. dollar, the euroand the British pound. This flexibilityreduces investors' exposure toforeignexchange expensesandcurrency risk. Call depositaccounts often have minimumdepositrequirementstoestablishan account and may have minimumdaily balance requirements, too. (7) 'MarginAccount' A brokerage account in which the brokerlendsthe customer cash to purchase securities. The loan in the account is collateralizedbythe securitiesandcash. Ifthe value ofthe stock drops sufficiently, the account holderwill be requiredto depositmore cash or sell a portion of the stock. In a margin account, you are investingwith your broker'smoney.By usingleverage in such a way, you magnify both gainsand losses. (8) MoneyMarket Account. This type of bank account pays interestat a higherrate than the rate paid on interest-bearingsavingsandchecking accounts. Often, moneymarket accounts impose a minimumbalance for the account to start earning interest. The minimumrequiredbalance on a moneymarket account is usuallyhigherthan that imposedon a checkingor savingsaccount. With a moneymarket account, withdrawals are limitedto six permonth. No more than three ofthese withdrawals can be by check. (i) Time Deposits, frequentlyreferredtoas certificatesof deposit(CDs),are bank accounts that require the account holderto make a depositand agree to leave fundsin the account for a specificamount of time.In return for this agreement, the financial institutionpays interestto the account. Often, the interestpaid on a CD is higherthat the rate paid on other types ofbank 15. Page 15 of 322 account. The account holderis requiredto keephis or her moneyin the account until the specifiedtermisover. However, some financial institutionsallow account holders to withdraw interest, withoutaffectingthe principal. In some cases, account holdersmay be allowedto withdraw their principal fundsbefore their CD matures, but a penalty istypically charged. (9) No-FrillsBank Accounts. A no-frillsbankaccount may allow the holder to pay billsand cash checks withoutpaying the high feesassociatedwithcompletingsuch transactions without an account. An account of this type will likelyallow for onlya limitednumberof checks, deposits, and withdrawals to be processedin any givenmonth. In most cases, interestisnot paid on a no- frillsbank account. (10) CheckingAccount isa bank account that uses checksas the primary instrumentfor withdrawing money.Witha checkingaccount, you can make purchases, pay bills, and give or loan moneyto anyone you choose. You can also use a check to transfer moneyfrom your checking account to a bank account at a differentfinancial institution.Usually, financial institutionsallow account holdersto make as many depositsand withdrawalsas theywish. Many allow account holdersto make withdrawals and depositsthrough automatic tellermachines(ATM) as well.
