If you aim to follow a career in EMERGENCY MEDICINE, you will need to do the acute care common stem training but it is not required for anaesthesia. However, work in emergency and acute medicine adds a depth of experience not available to those who opt for 'pure' anaesthesia. Career path - unlikely to work regular hours & need to be make quick and accurate decisions under pressure.- CHEMICAL PATHOLOGYChanges in the body's chemistry can be detected by testing blood, urine and other body fluids. If you choose to train in chemical pathology you will become an expert in how disease affects blood, urine & other tests on bodily fluids. Specialty combines science and medicine in a dual role; in the laboratory responsible for the clinical direction, management and quality of the service provided, as a clinician be involved in direct patient care and in providing advice to hospital doctors and GPs. Chemical pathologists often take care of patients with disorders such as diabetes, osteoporosis, high cholesterol and rare inherited metabolic diseases. Many are also involved in scientific research and teaching other health professionals. A specialty in which you probably enjoy 'family friendly' hours with few after-hours responsibilities.- HISTOPATHOLOGYDeals with the tissue diagnosis of disease - made on the basis of surgical specimens, biopsy or cellular asiprate, taken from a patient or from autopsy material, although biopsy diagnosis is by far the largest component.- MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGYMicrobiology is the study and diagnosis of bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal infections. As a microbiologist you will be the main connection between the laboratory and the patient's bedside. Concerned with the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases in hospitals and in the community - and in preventing people at risk, such as medical staff, from getting those diseases. Microbiologists help to identify the likely cause and advise on tests to diagnose it (e.g. identifies meningitis in a young child or spots an infectious disease trend in the local population).- MEDICINE IN GENERALThis core training is the entry point for all medical specialties.
