Michael
Ammar
Then and
Now
Don’t miss your opportunity to experience this World Champion Performer, award-winning lecturer, and one of magic’s most influential thinkers! He’s been featured on The Worlds Greatest Magic, twice on The Tonight Show, three times on The International Magic Awards, and the first ever 6-time award winner from the Academy of Magical Arts. The BBC Documentary “The Greatest Tricks in the Universe - EVER!” ranked Ammar’s Cups and Balls routine as the 7th greatest effect of all time! No wonder MAGIC magazine listed Michael as one of the “Most Influential Magicians of the Twentieth Century.” THE MAGIC OF MICHAEL AMMAR is now in its 18th printing, and his dozens of instructional DVD’s, which have out sold all others worldwide, have forever changed magic instructions for future generations. You’ll be entertained by his wit and enlightened by his wisdom as he teaches in complete detail many signature routines from his professional repertoire - as well as new favorites never featured in his lectures. Prepare to learn, laugh, and be inspired! The above article appeared in the November 2006 issue of the Ring 81 Newsletter. His accomplishments have only increased since then.

This month we are honored to have world-renowned Michael Ammar as our guest lecturer. In addition to the lecture at our general meeting Michael will hold a close-up training session, before the meeting, for about a dozen Ring 81 magicians. With all of this very high-level training and focus our magicians should make a quantum jump in their abilities for producing miracles. It is my hope that not only Ring 81 members and guests we will benefit from this training but audiences far and wide will see the results, too. I also want to say a word about the weekly Tuesday night magic group. For more than three years we have seen at least a dozen magicians sharing their magical performance, mini-lectures, critiques and just plain good fellowship. Most of those who attend perform regularly, some professionally. All have a great time on Tuesday nights. The sessions start about 7 PM and last several hours. We are currently meeting at Appleby's on Fruitville at Arthur Anderson, about 1/2 mile west of I-75. You are invited to attend. Finally, I want to congratulate Jose Reyes and Nick Locapo for their fine performances at the last meeting, during the period 6:30 to 7:00 PM. As a reminder, anyone wishing to perform may do so on a first come basis. Performances should be no more than 10 minutes in length to allow maximum performance opportunities for Ring members. Bob Banta
Thank you, Bob's Carpet Mart, for donating over a
dozen close-up mats (rug samples) to the Ring 81
Tuesday night group.

At our March meeting Dan Tong gave us some wonderful insight into what makes restaurant magic successful, having performed at the Magic Moment and other restaurants for 18 years. Dan re-created a restaurant setting by asking Diane Pick and Anthony Wangrocki to simulate the dining customers for his close-up work.
He showed us how he easily (and skillfully) resets
everything including cards, coins and sponge balls so that he is ready to move on to the next table without taking time to make any “adjustments”. He shared several tips such as avoiding the “announcement” of a trick before you do it. For example, if you are using sponge balls, just make them appear an start working with them rather telling people what you are going to do with them after placing them on the table.
If you are hoping for tips, it’s best to ask people to
put their own money on the table which you then use as part of your routine. Hopefully they will then leave this money on the table for you.
Most of Dan’s routines were laced with great humor. “When people are
laughing”, he says, “they are not able to think”. Diane, however, did not find it humorous when Dan vanished her diamond ring! She was delighted when it appeared again on the keychain in his pocket.
Guest, Claire Stirling, who was called on stage,
appeared perplexed as she reached into the Egg Bag proclaiming it empty, only to see Dan reach in and pull out an egg. Bob Banta was given a hands-on lesson in vanishing an egg and found that the inside pocket can indeed be elusive without lots of practice. Dan reminded us that we need to only learn three things: how to vanish the egg, get it into the pocket and get it out. The rest is all patter.
The lecture concluded with a lesson on ropes and some tips for cutting the rope at an angle and using Elmer’s glue in just the right places. No muss, no fuss, and no waste as Dan uses odd pieces left over from his previous show. Submitted by Diane Pick, Secretary

OK you Tuesday nighters. Not quite sure just when I'll be back on Tuesday
so I thought I would like to share one of two simple but amazing card tricks with you. Needless to say, I have no idea who the author is but it
involves no finger breaks, double lifts, false shuffles, etc. If you want to know how or why this trick works, I suggest you ask Dr. Steve Berger
who is pretty darned good as to figuring these things out. OK, here goes:
1. Have S (spectator) thoroughly mix the deck (can even be his deck) 2. Have him deal, face down, three separate piles of 3 in each pile (Pile A,
Pile B and Pile C) 3. Have hin turn over ANY of the three piles and both S and Mag. are to
make note of the bottom card 4. Let's say he turned over the middle pile (pile B) and the bottom card
was the four of clubs. 5. Place either pile A on top of pile C or pile C on top of pile A and then
place Pile B on the top, so that the noted card (4 of clubs) is now the third
card down from the top of the 9 card pile. 6. You then state that you are going to SPELL out the name of that card,
placing each card face down on the table and each succeeding card face down on top of that. Ex: You spell out the FOUR, placing each card face
down on the table and the other 3 cards face down on top of the first one....You have now placed cards face down, one on top of the other(for
the word, "four") 7. You now take the remaining cards in your hand and place them ON TOP
of the 4 face down cards. 8. You now spell out the word "OF" by placing two cards face down on the
table, one on top of the other. and place the remaining cards ON TOP of those 2 cards9
9.You now spell out the word "Clubs" in the same manner. 10. You now place the remaining cards in your hand ON TOP of those face
down cards
11.You now ask Bob Banta to spell out his last name. As he turns over the final "a" in his name, THAT CARD WIL BE THE FOUR OF CLUBS!
12. If you know that the S drives a Chevy car, ask him the name of the car he drives. You then spell out the word :Chevy" or "Buick"-----or any
FIVE letter word----such as saying that I am now going to produce the noted card, by magic------counting down 5 cards. (magic) The noted card
will ALWAYS be the FIFTH CARD DOWN FROM THE TOP------WHETHER THE NOTED CARD WAS THE 10 OF DIAMDOND, 3 OF SPADES, WHAT
HAVE YOU-----I kid you not ---Let me know if any of you have any problems making this trick work!
