About TOSCA

Twin Cities TOSCA is a locally-owned business established for the purpose of promoting arts and culture in the Twin Cities area. TC TOSCA hosts unique soirées and publishes this quarterly arts magazine, Exploring TOSCA.

The Magazine Twin Cities TOSCA publishes a quarterly magazine, Exploring TOSCA, which provides one-stop shopping for an array of arts and cultural events—from the traditional and familiar to the new, unique and sometimes bizarre. Exploring TOSCA also features the work of local visual artists in every issue and frequently the work of artists around the country as well.

The Events Twin Cities TOSCA produces arts events under the subheading of Experiencing TOSCA, which is known for its unique, one-of-a- kind soirées such as Ella, Eleanora & Ellington (jazz, history and music), Needles and Noodles (Chinese Culture) and Fun, Funk & Fondue (the ‘70s)

Our TeamLeann E. Johnson— Graphic DesignerLeann is a graphic designer, illustrator and tile artist. She designs for various local and national companies and publishes illustrations in The New York Times and The Saint Paul Almanac. She creates original, colorful tiles for home decor, jewelry and interior residential

installations. Leann serves on the City of Minneapolis’ Public Art Advisory Panel and is a member of the Handmade Tile Association and Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA).

Paul R. Coate— Marketing DirectorPaul R. Coate is a theatre artist, educator, and arts administrator. A proud member of Actors Equity Association, Paul’s performance credits include Children’s Theatre Company, History Theatre, Park Square Theatre, Theater Latté Da, Minnesota Orchestra, Skylark

Opera, Nautilus Music Theatre, and more. Paul’s administrative experience includes roles as Operations Manager at KVNO Radio in Omaha, NE, as Education Director at Bloomington Theatre and Art Center, and as Executive Director of West Bank School of Music.

Madeline Salmon— Writer, ProofreaderMadeline Salmon grew up and still lives in Hopkins, Minnesota. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 2010 with a major in Biology and a concentration in Environmental Studies. After college she worked for a year for the Minnesota Reading Corps, tutoring at risk preschoolers from low income and ESL families

to get them ready for kindergarten. Madeline loves photography, singing, writing, nature, and animals, particularly her two standard poodles, Scout and Audrey, and her cat, Pickles. She has been proofreading Exploring TOSCA since the summer of 2010.

Gail M. Weber—Owner, EditorGail Weber grew up in southern Minnesota, where she spent her childhood summers putting on shows in the family garage. While the garage shows eventually came to an end her passion for drama did not. She went on to engage in real-life drama–litigation–and spent over 20 years in the private practice of law, becoming a partner and eventually owning her

own law firm. In 2005, ready to start a new challenge, Gail closed her law firm and launched what is now known as Twin Cities TOSCA in order to promote the arts.

Paul R. Coate is the newest member of the Twin Cities TOSCA team in charge of publicity and marketing, but he is no stranger to our arts scene.

You may have seen Paul recently as “Enoch Snow” in the Minnesota Orchestra’s concert version of CAROUSEL. Possessing what the Minneapolis Star Tribune called “a robust tenor”, Paul has been a consistent and powerful presence on many area stages since moving to Minnesota in 2008. He has performed at Orchestra Hall, Children’s

Theatre Company, Theater Latté Da, Park Square Theatre, History Theatre, and as an audience favorite at Skylark Opera’s annual summer festival.

As an educator, Paul teaches for Hennepin Theatre Trust, Stages Theatre Company, and Bloomington Theatre and Art Center, where he also served as Education Director for a time. He is also a stage director who will helm the musical at Normandale Community College next spring. Additionally, Paul has served administratively at Caponi Art Park and West Bank School of Music.

Paul originally hails from Omaha, Nebraska, where he was a radio announcer for ten years, and performer with Opera Omaha, The Omaha Symphony, and Nebraska Shakespeare. Paul R. Coate lives in Bloomington with his wife and two children. For more information, visit www.paulrcoate.com.

Did You Know…Puccini based this opera on the short story “Madame Butterfly” (1898) by American lawyer and writer John Luther Long? Long’s sister had spent time in Japan as a missionary and had learned of the practice in Japan of “selling” Japanese women to foreign sailors during the period of time the sailor was staying in Nagasaki. The story was adapted for the stage by David Belasco and premiered in New York. Puccini saw the play in London in the summer of 1900 and was inspired to create the opera.

When people throw around unfamiliar opera terminology I always try to figure out how the word or phrase is spelled, and then I look it up in my Opera for Dummies book by David Pogue and Scott Speck. Another helpful book has been The Complete Dictionary of Opera & Operetta by James Anderson.

Lectures offered by various opera companies and some community ed classes provide some interesting insight as well. The Minnesota Opera offers free pre-show conversations (“Opera Insights”) as well as “Behind the Curtain” preview events about Minnesota Opera’s mainstage productions each season.

The Twin Cities Opera Guild has been working since 1952 to bring opera education to schools. This is especially significant now with the budget cuts that have affected arts programs in the schools. Putting the Health Back Into ‘Healthcare’ by Guy Odishaw

Here’s a simple question for you, “How can you have more of something if you don’t know what the something you want more of is? ” Imagine the child who does not yet understand what money is. To that child, things like food, clothing, heat, water and toys just appear. In time, parents are seen as the source of money, the old ‘money tree’ is invoked. At some point the child’s fantasy is crushed by the reality of work and the understanding that money doesn’t grow on trees, it must be earned—ugh! Perhaps you remember having this realization. Even as adults, if we don’t know what money IS and how it WORKS in the world, it will quite likely elude us, it or the opportunity to have it will slip right through out hands.

The same is true of health. If you do not know what it is how can you have more of it? Do you know what health is? Most people, including highly educated professional health care providers, define health by what it is not. In other words people define it by the absence of symptoms. This would by similar to defining wealth as the absence of debt.

Imagine what it would be like if health was quantified in the same way money is. The time and effort you spend taking care of yourself would be compensated with health in the same way the time and effort you spend at work is compensated with money. You could put the health you earn in your personal health fund (known as resiliency). Being a savvy investor you would diversify your portfolio by investing in low risk, long term, high yield physical, mental and spiritual funds. The dividends would be realized daily in the form of increased vitality, joy, engagement, depth, relationships, creativity and more.

Local Artist Shares How Manic Depression Has Enhanced Her Creativityby Rachel M. Anderson, Contributing Writer

Mental illness is an issue the majority of high school students have never experienced or witnessed for themselves, but on Feb. 11, students at South High School in Minneapolis met a local woman who has lived with manic depressive disorder and anxiety.

Edina resident Polly Norman shared her personal experience with the students, and amazed them by explaining how her mental illness has actually stimulated her to explore and navigate to a successful art career and the discovery of her own artistic process. Norman shares the journey she has traveled through her new book, “Dances Through Glass,” which is a 25-year retrospective of her work.

Norman started her art career spending a decade photographing dancers at Ballet Arts Minnesota. This led to the creation of her signature work: dancey abstract works using architectural glass block.

Norman shared how moving back and forth from a manic state into depression and everything in between actually helped her come up with ideas that flowered into a unique artistic process of her own invention. So she says, “There is a positive that comes out of all of this.”

During her visit, Norman also touched on the fear and taboo surrounding psychiatric medications, which she feels are absolutely necessary for some people with mental illnesses, and she encouraged students to seek help if they are having problems.

“Many times you just can’t do it yourself,” she said. Norman went on to encourage kids to take advantage of their school counselors and the resources at their hands.

The talk was held in conjunction with the school’s Silver Ribbon Campaign, a new program in which speakers come to the school to talk about their mental illnesses. The program is designed to enlighten and help remove the stigma surrounding mental illness.

BELGIAN About Belgium What’s not to like about a country known for its beer, its chocolate and its lace? Officially The Kingdom of Belgium, this beautiful country’s two largest regions are the Dutch speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French speaking region of Wallonia in the south. Having prospered the past fifty years as a modern, technologically advanced European state, Belgium is a member of NATO and the EU. Besides beer and chocolate, Belgium also takes credit for its famous waffles and delicious french fries with mayonnaise. However, its contributions to art are well noted as well, having given the world Rubens, VanDyk and two of the founders of Art Nouveau architecture, Victor Hroda and Henry van de Velde.

Also known for its musical influence throughout Europe (especially during the Renaissance) Belgium continues to embrace the music that unites a country divided by language, including jazz, hip-hop and chanson. Fun fact: The saxophone was invented by a Belgian–Adolphe Sax.

Belgium is nestled along the borders of The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France and the North Sea. It is about the size of Maryland.

“In my work I am especially interested in the energy that a particular subject expresses. The rhythms and movement that I paint are inspired by the subject but also arise from my response to it. The subject may be of exuberant life as in a garden, the shifting angles of a landscape, or the spare remains of life as in washed up and broken seashells. In whatever subject I choose to paint, the patterns are there and simply need to be revealed and enhanced. I am ever interested in the essential qualities as I create the composition.

“My painting process is wet-into-wet watercolor and sometimes includes mixed media. I am fascinated with the way the wet paint disperses on the wet paper surface. It has a natural beauty which I can only hope to harness and direct. I have spent a great amount of time exploring the various paints and papers, both by type and manufacturer in order to maximize the most positive results.

“The act of weaving the color together in the painting is a source of ongoing passion of mine. The layered effect achieved by glazing brings forth a mysterious marriage of contrast and harmony which are seen as occurring simultaneously. The creative act feels like a dance, a meditation on color and flow, balance and unity.

“The pursuit of painting will never reach the end of intrigue for me if I can truly respond to the uniqueness of each subject and stay open to the possibilities that arise through the process itself. It is a continuous joy.”

Gail Speckmann is an international award-winning watercolor artist, instructor, and art judge from Plymouth, MN. She has a B.A. in Fine Art from Gustavus Adolphus College. Her book Wet-into-Wet Watercolor, a Watson-Guptill Publication, is considered one of the most definitive instructions in this technique. Gail has had particular success in helping her students loosen up and enjoy the painting experience. Listed in Who’s Who in America, her classes have been conducted throughout the U.S. and Canada. She has also led twelve European tours.

The Art of Business

Many business professionals have great ideas that could represent great value to the world, but simply can’t stand behind them when it matters most.

Some of us pass up on opportunities entirely because we get too anxious. Or we find a way to step up, but our heart doesn’t kick in, and we present ourselves like indifferent automotons, unable to say anything that communicates our passion and convictions.

What causes this self-restraint? After years of talking with presenters (and after a lifetime of being a hardwired introvert myself), I recognize that it’s not the fear or the anxiety that’s really the problem. The problem is really that our fear and anxiety is putting the attention on ourselves. We’re worried about failing, or being rejected, or being judged.

The good news is, we don’t want the attention on themselves. We would dearly love for it to be on what we care the most about: Our ideas. This is a step in the right direction, but it’s less than ideal.

Try focusing on who the idea helps. This works because it helps us keep the attention off of ourselves, and it engages our heart as we talk about these real people and this measurably better difference these people will experience.

With our hearts engaged, we are much better equipped to portray ourselves as the fully passionate professionals we truly are when no one is looking. Which, naturally, helps us succeed in selling our ideas.
