CHRISTMAS CRACKER LIGHTS SWITCH ON & EAT STREETAcross town Shrewsbury’s shops stay open late on Wednesdays from 18th November. The start of late night shopping is celebrated with the Christmas Cracker event, when the Christmas lights go on and the streets are filled with a lantern parade, live music and a visit from Father Christmas. New for 2015, look out for the first festive Eat Street Shrewsbury with chef Marcus Bean.

The award-winning Market Hall hosts a late evening shopping event on 18th November and the following month, on 16th December, it opens late to coincide with Carols In The Square (don’t miss the complimentary mulled wine and mince pies on 16th December).

LET IT SNOWVisitors will literally be able to ‘get into Christmas’ as they step into a giant snow globe in the Square on 5th December. See Shrewsbury turn into Snowsbury as the snow falls over the town’s sky line inside the globe from 10am. (A small charitable donation will be required to have a go).

CHURCH TOURS Shrewsbury’s churches ooze history and at Christmas they can be seen in their full seasonal splendour. Start with the spire of St Mary’s Church – it’s one of the tallest in England and for over 500 years it has dominated the skyline. Designed by architect George Stuart, St Chad's is where Charles Darwin was christened in 1809 and at Christmas it’s packed with Christmas trees. Shrewsbury Abbey was founded as a Benedictine Monastery and has connections to the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael and Wilfred Owen.

Shrewsbury’s team of tour guides offer church tours throughout December - ask about specialist group tours and events at the Shrewsbury Visitor Information Centre.

A CHRISTMAS CAROLFollow in the footsteps of film stars and join the A Christmas Carol guided walk in December, which can be booked through the Shrewsbury Visitor Information Centre. The 1984 version of the Dickens classic was filmed on location in Shrewsbury and each Christmas the tours take in the streets to see the buildings used as sets

as well as the mock grave of Ebenezer Scrooge, which still stands in the graveyard at St Chad's Church. Find out more at the Visitor Information Centre at the Museum and Art Gallery.

MAGICAL WORLD OF MASKS AND PUPPETSArt lovers, enthusiasts and families will be captivated by the exhibition of masks and puppets at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery this winter. Once you’ve mused over the magical exhibits, tour the main museum and discover 650 million years of history through a thousand remarkable objects.

SHREWSBURY CHRISTMAS FESTIVALThe Shrewsbury Christmas Festival in Quarry Park on 12th and 13th December is the creation of seasoned festival organiser Beth Heath, who founded Shrewsbury Food Festival. The two day event promises more than 120 local producers, drinks in the form of steaming hot chocolate, mulled wine and warming liqueurs, gifts galore, an ice rink for the small and big kids, craft workshops, storytelling with Father Christmas and more.

Here's a street by street guide, with plenty more to be found along the way. Check out the Directory at the back to see the full range on offer. Here's a few to whet the appetite...

gifts you really want to buy for yourself and Callaghan Fine Paintings and Contemporary Bronze Gallery for something extra special.

THE PARADE On the way along St Mary’s Street, don’t miss the Parade Shopping Centre, which sits proudly behind St Mary’s church. The Grade II listed building was once a hospital for the people of Shropshire. Today it houses many more of Shrewsbury’s independent shops along its quaint Victorian corridors.

PRIDE HILL On leaving St Mary’s you’ll find yourself at the top of the Pride Hill which is home to the Darwin and Pride Hill Shopping Centres and a host of shopping essentials including Boots, Thornton’s and Accessorize. Turn over for more on the Centres where you will find a host of flagship fashion, jewellery and accessory stores.

BUTCHER ROW, FISH STREET AND BEAR STEPS Leading off Pride Hill, this street was once home to the town’s butchers. Today it is lined with independent eateries and shops. Head there if you’re looking for a new festive hairstyle at Beachwood or perhaps a peek at some antique jewellery in County Goldsmiths, Shropshire's largest suppliers of

Victorian, Art Deco, Edwardian and Vintage pieces that are pre-loved. Further along the street you’ll find White Orchard, which is a one stop shop for homeware, children's gifts, garden accessories and more.

HIGH STREET High Street is lined with an eclectic range of independents, from delis, stationery and clothing shops, to the desirable brands we know and love from Bang and Olufsen to House of Fraser. With names including White Stuff, Sea Salt, Joules and Waterstones, and plenty of choice for a coffee stop along the way, it may take you a while to walk your way down.

THE SQUAREIf you love a 16th century market square packed with the latest stores then head to the centre of town and spot some of the newest additions. Don’t miss JoJo, Maman Bebe and Acoustic Boutique alongside favourites such as Pockets, Carol Grant and Fat Face. Just off the Square on Princess Street, you’ll find Toggs and Cloggs, a new but firmly established destination for shoe and accessory-loving ladies and children.

CASTLE STREET Take in the range of stores along Castle Street and include Inocencia with its designer

jackets, scents and accessories for him and UGG boots, jewellery that’s totally on trend and Liberty-print Kinky Knickers by Mary Portas for her.

Visitors to stay this Christmas? Make them feel special with beautiful bedding from Country Linens. For a great choice of food, gift ideas and new outfits for all the family, check out everyone’s festive favourite M&S.

MARDOL AND ROUSHILLThese streets are a mix of everything you really need –from balloons and fancy dress from the Giant Party Shop, to Memory Lane Antiques and Vintage on Roushill for a one-off outfit or gift that’s bound to be like no one else’s this Christmas.

Lakeland has creative kitchenware to spice up your Christmas table or to give as practical presents. Make sure you capture those memorable moments and call into Jessop for your photographic needs. Art Framing, the family-run picture framing and art gallery, is the perfect place to find gifts with a difference.

MEN'S FASHIONMenswear shapes have been loosening up over the past few seasons, but nowhere has this been more clearly seen than with winter’s outerwear. AW15’s most popular menswear this season includes the turtle neck, overcoat, the checked blazer and baggy trousers! Head to H&M, Blue Inc, Topman, Peacocks and River Island to get your hands on these key winter pieces.

WOMEN’S FASHIONThe shift to 70’s trends and opulent glamour are the leading themes for this year’s Christmas period, and include faux-fur, poncho’s and glamorous footwear to make a real statement. Find fashion favourites including H&M, River Island, Next, Topshop, Monsoon, Warehouse and New Look, where you’ll certainly achieve the look.

JEWELLERYWith AW15 fashion firmly putting statement pieces at the core of every outfit, jewellery is not to be forgotten from the Christmas shopping lists! Ernest Jones launched their new range of Le Vian jewellery, with striking coloured stones this winter, or for more subtle but elegant pieces, chose from our range of jewellery stores including F. Hinds, H. Samuels and Pandora, all providing experienced staff to help you pick the perfect gifts!

GIFTSNot forgetting those essential stocking fillers, from the Body

Shop and The Perfume Shop, keep your eyes out for new fragrances; Sauvage, by Dior and Illicit from Jimmy Choo are just some of our favourites.

TOYSWhether you’re out shopping for the top ranked toys for Christmas 2015 or something a little more unusual, The Entertainer and Hawkins Bizarre in the Pride Hill Shopping Centre have everything you need. Making the list of ‘top toys’ this Christmas are Frozen’s sing-a-long Elsa, Thunderbirds Tracey Island playset and Minions Tumbling Talking Stuart. Lego has also seen a huge comeback this year and also makes the list of must have toys.

If you need a break from shopping, we’ve got that covered too!

Take a trip to see Santa in his grotto at the Darwin Centre from the 21st November to the 23rd December. All children visiting will receive a small gift, with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support. For grotto opening days and times please www.shrewsbury-shopping.co.uk

Or, if you don’t have the children or grandchildren in tow, there’s a wide selection of cafes and eateries to refuel whilst you’re tackling the Christmas list. Why not try M&S café, Massarellas, Aleyna’s, K2 or Café Flavour in Darwin, or Café Milano and Café Georgia in Pride Hill for a well-earned break.

FESTIVE MENU A festive food trip to Shrewsbury’s Market Hall is an absolute must. Inside you’ll find fresh meat, poultry, game and seafood alongside seasonal vegetables, fresh eggs and locally made pies. Oh and not to mention the handmade gourmet chocolates, artisan cheeses and handcrafted gifts and jewellery?

When it comes to delis – Shrewsbury has it all wrapped up. Appleyard’s on Wyle Cop, Christopher’s on Mardol and Deliciate on High Street can each take a foodie trip around the world and perfectly fill your festive table. There’s speciality cheeses and charcuterie, homemade sweet and savoury delights and seasonal musts, from Italian panettone Christmas cakes to salamis strung from the ceiling.

Another place to pick up your festive vegetables is Pomona on Castle Street. Sign up to their vegetable box scheme if you want the seasons best delivered direct to your door.

DIVINE DRINKS Stock up on your Christmas wines and champagnes at Tanners Wine Merchants which is home to captivating Dickensian Cellars and one

of the most outstanding wine selections in the UK. For beer lovers, a bottle of Shropshire Gold made by Salopian Brewery is a must try, as is Shropshire Lad by Wood Brewery - it’s a local legend.

FESTIVE HOME It’s the personal touches that make Christmas special, so why not hand-make a table runner, personalised napkins or Christmas crackers to make your table sparkle. Head to haberdashery Watson and Thornton on Mardol for metres upon metres of seasonal fabric and ribbons, sparkling buttons and trimmings.

A few doors away lies Listers, an emporium of seasonal sparkle. Look out for decorations, candles and flowers to dress up your door, dining table or fireplace.

HOME-MADE DECORATIONS Whether it’s an evergreen floral piece or traditional and twiggy decoration, Juliet Chilton on Wyle Cop has a wonderful array of furniture, glassware and things you just have to buy. Check out Vinterior for an impressive stag’s head and other quirky finds and Vinegar Hill for beautiful candles and homeware.

PREEN AND PAMPERWhether it’s an office party straight after work, or a seasonal weekend session with friends, some party season pampering is a must. Shrewsbury has serious hair appeal with the widest range of salons to suit every style – just browse The Directory to get a flavour.

For starters, Royston Blythe on St Mary’s Street offers some serious seasonal flair - Royston is one of the UK’s most in-demand hairdressers and an international guest artist for L’Oreal, working alongside his business partner Nick.

For cuts, curls, colours and a free consultation for those looking for a festive change, check out Browns on Princess Street. For the latest beauty products and techniques from Elemis, CND Shellac and St Tropez, visit one of the four opulent treatment rooms at Mr David's Hair & Beauty Salon or many of the towns tucked-away salons.

Aura Hair and Beauty provides colour and care for your hair when you need it most. Call in for a wide range of classic and contemporary hairstyling services.

ChristmasTraditionsGorgeous scented garlands and decorations for your home. Kitchens filled with traditional festive flavours. Make-overs to make you feel good. This year, add some charm and sparkle to your Christmas from Shrewsbury’s creative and independent shops and stalls.

COOL CAFES Whether it’s coffee in a museum or cinema or afternoon tea in a timber-framed tea room, the café culture thrives on Shrewsbury’s cobbled streets.

CSons on Milk Street is the new offering from the four Crouch brothers, hence the name, ‘C’ Sons. The food may be affordable and the atmosphere relaxed, but be prepared - the chef is busy impressing guests and foodies are adding it to their list of favourites.

Peaberry’s is an independent café bar also on Milk Street. It’s light and inviting by day and cosy by night. Early evening they serve Tapas and on Friday and Saturday evenings they are open from 6pm, serving dinner and cocktails.

Head to Ginger & Co if you’re looking for something vegan, gluten or dairy free. It’s Shrewsbury’s first crowd funded café and yes, it’s all about the community that helped get it off the ground. The team have a real do-it-yourself mentality which means if they serve it, then they either made it or sourced it locally.

From the tapas to the table talk, there is a lot of sharing going on in the open-plan restaurant that is Number 4 Butcher Row. The menu is tempting, tasty and

informal. Some say their onion rings are the best in Shrewsbury.

Lots love Chez Sophie because it is fabulously French – there's French music playing to accompany the Nutella covered crepes. Others love it for the quirky, sweet drinks served up in milk bottles and the snacks topped with sprinkles and stars. If you need some superfood as the season sets in, then lunch at Optimum Joy is a must. This wellbeing retreat and organic wholefood café has a menu packed with wholesome vegan dishes and make fresh green juices to order. There are also a variety of therapists and healers available for alternative therapies.

A SIDE ORDER OF HISTORY Records show that the Golden Cross was used as an inn as far back as 1428 and you only need to step through the door to feel the character and quirkiness of this place. Winter brings rich, heart-warming and slow-cooked dishes to the menu and once you’ve cosied in for the night, you won’t want to leave.

For more than 550 years Drapers Hall has been a meeting place for merchants and traders. Today it holds a reputation for being one of Shropshire's finest classical restaurants. Creative cocktails and unusual beers accompany the modern menu

which is packed with unusual twists on culinary classics.

East meets west on House of the Rising Sun’s Christmas menu, which is packed with noodles, sushi and flavoursome skewers on one side and traditional seasonal dishes on the other. The restaurant’s warm lighting and stylish dress means it’s a great place to stop and sparkle during the festive season.

VENUES WITH A VIEW With a scintillating location on the edge of the Quarry Park, the Riverside Restaurant and Bar offers stunning views and a wide range of mouth-watering cuisine. The menu offers classic and modern Mediterranean dishes with a wide range of pasta, seafood and meat dishes.

Its riverside location only adds to the relaxed feeling in The Armoury. Their Christmas Fayre menus are always a popular choice and with dishes like braised feather of beef bourguignon with Stilton and apple dumplings alongside Homity pie, it’s easy to see why.

The panoramic views from the second floor of Theatre Severn are a great backdrop to the beautifully cooked food at The Foundry. You don't need to be seeing a show to eat there, just a love of good food and wine.

1514

FestiveFeastsForget about the kitchen for the day. Christmas is the time to get together and celebrate with friends and family over some fine festive food and drink on Shrewsbury’s streets. Packed to the brim with a choice to suit every taste and pocket, the Directory provides a mouth-watering menu of places to go.

FESTIVE FIZZDressed to impress and looking to treat yourself to some cocktails this Christmas? There’s no shortage of venues to try. Head to The Libertine Cocktail Bar and Tearoom where the talented team of makers and shakers add a touch of theatre to the mix.

The impressive list of cocktails at St Nicolas Café Bar will have you spoilt for choice. Take your time as you take in its cool lighting and architecture. The welcoming bar at the Cornhouse at the bottom of Wyle Cop or Cromwells on Dogpole promise a lively atmosphere and good company.

COOL BEERIf beer is more your tipple, there’s a welcoming array of places to sup and savour a pint. For a great choice of real ales call in at the Salopian Bar. Or meet friends for a festive get-together in the Coach and Horses, a Victorian pub tucked away in a quiet side street, which offers several local real ales.

A knowledgeable team of bar staff will help you make your choice at The Three Fishes, a traditional CAMRA approved pub housed in a Tudor timbered building.

Quirky independent bar Blind Tiger also has a team that is passionate about its drinks offer. Here you can sample craft and world beers in the heart of Shrewsbury’s nightlife.

TRADITIONAL INDULGENCE Christmas in Shrewsbury’s oldest and most historic, half-timbered house, Henry Tudor House, is pretty grand. By night you can be raucous in the bar, sophisticated in the restaurant or party animal in the impressive ‘Big Room’ on the top floor.

The Albert Lounge and Bar, also known as The Alb has an indulgent Christmas all wrapped up with festive cocktails, sparkling receptions and heavenly three-course banquets that are certain to leave you with a rosy glow.

Ashley’s is a great place to gather with friends for drinks and food. Every Thursday night they have live music from 9pm until late.

HEY DJIf you want to meet friends under the mistletoe and dance until dawn, then head to one of Shrewsbury's evening venues. Good times are always on the menu at the Waterfront Bar which offers food, drink and regular live music. Don’t miss their unique ginnasium, which consists of seven gins, served in a giant balloon glass with tonic. Adjacent to the bar is Bonds, a popular over 25's nightclub.

When the weekend comes, The Source Bar is the place to be after dark. The club’s unique design takes you to a different world, a place filled with the latest House, R&B and Dance beats. The Aviary Lounge and Club on Raven Meadows is the latest addition

to the club scene and their Christmas party package includes private cocktail lounge hire, buffet and fizz on arrival.

SWEET SLUMBER Shrewsbury has plenty of great guest houses, B&Bs, historic hotels and inns that promise a restful place to lay your head. Here’s just a few to get you started on your selection.

There's the Lion Hotel - where Dickens and Disraeli once stayed and Paganini once played. It’s the perfect combination of 16th century architecture and classical comfort. In Bellstone, Morgans @ The Exchange Hotel offers all the old charm of an old building with modern rooms, each with large en-suites. Or for a four poster bed and a traditional welcome, The Prince Rupert has been entertaining guests for over one hundred years.

Another resting place in the heart of town is Porterhouse SY1, a bed and breakfast with 5* AA Rated boutique rooms. For boutique chic head to the Lion and Pheasant. Inside the two historic townhouses you’ll find cosy candle-lit drinking nooks and simple, serene bedrooms.

The Premier Inn is a good choice if you’re looking for a modern budget hotel near shops, cafes and the train station. The Old Post Office nestled in a cobbled courtyard on Milk Street is great value and the perfect location to explore the town.
