THE ARTERY

THE ARTERY BEGAN back in the day when Prof. Alan

Lazarus was chair; it was black ink on white paper and it

contained articles, reviews of exhibitions, aesthetic state-

ments and illustrations. Designed and produced by faculty

with some input from students, it was a typical product

of the 1970s. Since that time, it h

as gone through several

transmutations; color was added, it was more deliberately

designed, and it became the yearly publication that high-

lighted the art work of students juried into the “Profiles of

the Future” exhibition.

Well, it

has come a long way baby! This year’s Artery is a

digital publication produced by the Student Art Association

officers in collaboration with a member of the faculty; we

have arrived at the 21st century not just through the medium,

but also in the empowerment of students who took over their

publication and truly made it their own.

In these p

ages you will find some of the best work by

students from the William Paterson University

Department

of Art; certain categories stand out this year: woods, sculpture,

painting and posters. This year’s faculty jury consisted

of professors Elaine Lorenz (sculpture), Steve Rittler

(animation), and Harry Weil (art history). Th

ey agreed on

aesthetic diversity, technical mastery and originality of vision;

these elements are all refl

ected in the selected art works.

Why does art remain important in an increasingly

mechanized world such as ours? The late playwright Samuel

Beckett wrote that “art breaks the dreary silence of existence;”

while the muralist J.C. Orozco believed that “art was

knowledge at the service of emotion.” Art is b

oth and does

both, and much more. It gives witness to

humanity’s deep

misery and small glory. It enhances life

. These works by our

students add to the “visual registry”of our humanity.
