Dear Father:

We were pleased to receive your letter, but at the same time sad to

read about your pains. As for us, we enjoy perfect health, and also able to

make a good living, so we have reached the clover-field, which, on the

pasture of life, many have sought in vain, but it did entail a great deal of

difficulty to get this far. When, 14 years ago I could say with Winkler

Prins, "Farewell, grey-haired Europe", I was of good courage, and I have not

been disappointed in America. But a person who comes to the new world must

not think that the roasted hogs roam about with the knife in their backs. A

person must work here, and then everything will follow. What is withheld

from the workingman where you are in Europe, or probably in the opinion of

the rich, to which he is not entitled. Here food for the worker, there

poverty for the laborer. Here the laboring man is respected, there he is

despised, here a citizen of the country, there a slave of the rich, here the

right to vote, there not permitted to be in the presence of the upper class

with a cap on. But enough of that.

I prefer to tell you about a case which will show you how things are

done here. Next week I will be taking a seat as a member of a jury in

court, and that court will last for probably 14 days. I will explain this

to you more fully, because you will be dumbfounded. A man like your son a

member of the court? Well now, in all of America it is the custom when

there is to be a trial, six or twelve jury members are appointed from the

citizenry who are to decide what is proper. Naturally they must be

individuals who are found to be qualified according to the opinion of the

judge, among which I was considered to be in his judgment. I would have

prefered to stay at home with the cows and calves but an experience like

this would do me no harm, and we were well paid.

Now I will tell you something about personal matters. You wrote in

your letter that I had never written to you from Kansas. I think I did two

times without receiving an answer, but be that as it may, that is not a

reason for not writing again, and that must not happen again, because, as

Grotieus says, "time flies" and we along with it. I discover an occassional

grey hair in m~ ordinarily blond locks.

We milk 20 cows and probably, when I return from my jury duty in two

weeks, fifty, but these are not all my own. Part of them are mine, 20 head,

but the others I milk for a half, and besides we have 150 head belonging to

someone elso to be pastured. This means a total of 200 head, which brings

in a nice return, even though it amounts to only $.20 a month for each cow

belonging to someone else.

Butter is quite high priced in America and costs $.20 a pound. So

everything included, we have a good income. So I thought I would send you a

present, and have sent Lucas $10, with the request that' he give it to you

because I could not get it from here to Holland. That was just a week ago,

and it will reach you soon after this letter. The bill of exchange which

you will receive will amount to about 20 gulden, a little more if I am not

mistaken. Please give Cornelis a couple of gulden so that he too can have a

good meal with his chidren, and tell him I am looking for the letter he

promised.

Greetings to all of the sisters and brothers-in-law still living. Tell

them that they should write sometime. We do little farming. Cattle raising

is the pricipal business and it pays exceptionally well.

Our children are growing well and are well-behaved and active, and we

have a busy life. Farming does not amount to much here yet, but I have

broken in 60 acres of my land. I raise very little as food for the cattle,

and do not even attempt to grow grain. Wheat last year yielded from 5 to 20

bushels per acre, and that is the most that is produced here, but everyone

goes in for cattle. Grass is abundant in the winter as well as in the

summer, y

that is, when there is no snow on the gound, and what there is had

soon disappeared.

Dear Father, Brothers and Sisters:

It has been a long time since I have written you a letter. Busyness,

postponement and forgetfulness have all contributed until I was alerted by a

letter from Nauta, and then took up the pen.

We are all well and hope this may be true of you also, but, alas, your

situation does not seem to improve, and probably will not if it is cancer.

And, as you wrote in your last letter, it will bring you to your grave.

Still, father, you have reached an advanced age. 73 winters have cast snow

upon your head, and you have been granted the blessing of becoming a great-

grandfather (because Neeltje has been married for more than 1 and 1/2 years

and already has a fine boy six months old). But still the saying of

Phileman is apropos for almost everyone, "Farewell, beautiful world which

still charms me".

Our affairs are running quite smoothly. We live on the dairy and make

a good living. We do not do much farming, except to raise food for the

cattle, but we will have to place more emphasis upon farming because it is

improving every year. As a result, more land is being taken over, and

consequently, the public grazing land is decreasing in area. We would have

preferred that the raising of grain and other products would remain the same

as it was in the beginning, that is, it did not amount to much then, and now

everyone here makes a living on cattle raising and is successful. But since

there have been good crops here last year, people are coming from all

corners of the earth to acquire land. That naturally reduced the public

domain because everyone who comes to America wants to have land and can get

it here at a bagatelle of $20 per acre in 60-acre parcels, but must live

upon it exclusively for 5 years. This encourages many people to come and

that is wise too, but it takes the grazing land away from us early settlers

in part, even though we all own a large section ourselves, and still desire

to possess more, because in a few years it will be worth a great deal.

Neeltje and her husband, Leonard Ver Hoeff (a native American with

Dutch parents), live a half hour from here and is our nearest neighbor,

They also live on their dairy products and have 16 cows and two horses.

Our children are growing up nicely. Roelof is already quite a man and

is as strong as I am, and Aaltje is as tall as her mother. Janie and

Caroline are a pair of smart school-girls, and learn well.

This winter we have had a lot of cold weather and snow, but now the

ground is bare and the rye is already showing up green. I have sown 15

acres of rye last fall just for feed for the cattle to graze upon it,

because the hay-land is decreasing in area and rye mown green makes good hay

here.

We are busy digging a .new well and struck water today at a depth of 35

feet. That is not deep for this area because some people must dig as much

as 100 feet before they reach water. Ours is shallow because we live near

the Saline River. It is more difficult higher up as the land slopes down to

the river-side, so as a result it is harder to reach water higher up, but

not entirely impossible.

Next summer we expect many immigrants from the east, that is, from the

eastern states. Several are already coming to look around. This week a

German came to my house. He was from Hanover Prussia but had lived in

Michigan for ten years. There are about 10 dutch families living within 20

miles. They are: Koning, Kraai, Schimmel, Van Der Veer, Van Zee, Jan De

Boer, also a Friesian, two Verhoefs, of which one is your grandchild, and

one Snel, and your Jacob.

Tell Nauta that I am busy with a letter for him and that he can expect

one in a couple of weeks.

I am sorry, father, I have no money at present, otherwise I would send

some. Now-a-days it is a matter of paying out and not receiving. In the

spring I will be making more, and will remember you if you are still living.

I know this is of little comfort, but I can do no more at present.

should write, too. I have long expected a letter from Cornelis.

Dear Brother and Sister:

I have received your letter and have read the others which were

enclosed regarding Father, and I have no objection to his coming, but it is

a question of the money. We have had to live for a year on our savings, and

have had to buy everything for the cattle and horses, so you can understand

that money is quite scarce, but I will try to make some arrangements and

promise $5.00, and if possible $10.00, but what is the best way to send it

in you opinion? Would it not be better for you to investigate in Pella to

find out what is the cheapest way. You must write back at once because if

the money must be sent to Holland I will have to send it to you first to

have it exchanged because I can not do it here.

We are all well and the wheat looks good, so we hope for a better year

than the former one. The land is good here and beautiful, without trees.

And there is no coal, but we cook and bake the best we can. If we get

enough rain we will do well, so if we keep up our courage and hold up our

head we will succeed. A 300-acre section of land is worth some struggling.

We are doing our plowing and the ground is damp enough. The wheat is

already up, and the land looks green as you look over it.
