Padre’s Pen ~Third Sunday of Easter

It’s been a few years since I’ve read G.K. Chesterton’s book Orthodoxy. Chapter 4 has a very famous line which is quoted often,

and I quote it here, “Tradition means giving a vote to the most obscure of classes, our ancestors. It is a democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.” St. Augustine will talk of his encounter of the living God as, “O Beauty ever ancient ever new.”

I quote these lines because I have been pondering over these last several weeks about how we stack up with those who have passed on the faith to us. We have received a great patrimony of faith, life, and tradition. It is a beautiful faith that survived the fall of Rome while St. Augustine and the Christian world reeled in disbelief. It also withstood the great onslaught of the modernism of G.K. Chesterton’s time. There have been, through 2 millennia of Christianity, so many assaults on the faith; yet, holy mother Church still stands. Every generation is called to be stewards of the good and beautiful things of our faith handed on to us, live that faith out in the environment in which we find ourselves, and hand it on faithfully to those who will come after. So, I’ve been asking myself:

Is the pandemic and the government-ordered closing of our churches the great challenge of our time? Are we responding with our virtual Masses, rosaries, meetings, etc., in the way that best preserves the treasure of the faith? Are we using this time to learn well what it is we really have so we can appreciate it more when we get back to some sense of normalcy? Will this bring about a renewal of faith in a culture that increasingly calls itself spiritual but not religious? What Spirit or spirit will rise to this occasion?

Alas, I don’t know the answer to the questions. I ponder them, pray about them, reflect on them. I do know that there is a larger hand than mine that nudges us all in the right direction as He did so with all of those who have gone before us. Any the ones who have gone before us are our greatest cheerleaders before the throne of God. Where they have gone, I pray we have the courage and strength to follow and add our votes to the faith of the Church we leave to others.

CCW NewsDid you notice the Beautiful Poinsettias at Christmas and the Lilies at Easter around the Altars? The Council of Catholic Women (CCW) provides these for the church through our fundraising. Our spring fundraiser is coming soon! Cedar Brook Garden Center has offered to give us 10% of sales purchased during the week of May 17-23. FLIER MUST ACCOMPANY YOU and is found on Page 6 of this bulletin. We realize you are anxious to get outside and plant, but please consider supporting us in May!

Wondering how you can help? Read on…We have a few questions for Norb Sticha, who has been the voice of Catholic Charities and the Dorothy Day Cen-ter for our parish for many years.

How did you initially get involved with the CatholicCharities and how many years has this been going on?Norb: Within the school year 1991-1992, Tom Parlin, Youth Minister here at SW invited high school students and parents to be a part of serving a meal event at the original site which had become known as the Catholic Charities Dorothy Day Center. Nate, our son, myself and a few others had this initial experience. On October 14, 1995, the second Saturday of the month meal prepara-tion and serving became a reality. SW has continued this commitment monthly since then without fail.

What is the biggest difference you have seen over all those years?Norb: The number of meals has increased. Early years we saw families, single and dual parent, coming for their evening meal. Today our guests are all adults.

In going to the cctwincities.org website, I was amazed at the size and scope of Catholic Charities, can you fill us in on how many different charities fall under their um-brella?Norb: It's impossible for me to identify the size of Catho-lic Charities or the separate entities. These are areas of concern within our population that Catholic Charities at-tempts to meet: sheltering, housing, mental health ser-vices, early childhood care and education, health care, parent support service, and homeless older adult, and people with disabilities advocacy.

Wow, Catholic Charities has a much bigger reach than I was aware of. You have been personally involved in the Dorothy Day Center, how many clients do you typically see on a given Saturday, and has this number changed with the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic?Norb: January 11=260, February 8=281, March 14=222, April 11=207 guests. For those fortunate to have hous-ing on site within Dorothy Day Place, Catholic Charities staff is providing food for them to prepare in their unit. It also follows the mandated Stay at Home Order. I believe that is why we are seeing a decline in number of meals directly served.

How has your interaction and food preparation changed?Norb: There is no restriction on volunteer/guest inter-action. The 6' distancing is constantly being suggested along with only three people at a table in the dining room versus seven. The serving line continues as previously, cafeteria style, with everyone getting the same on their tray. There are currently no salt and pepper shakers on the table, with packets on trays. All condiments are put on the tray in the line versus offering extras in the dining room. Hygiene, hygiene, and more hygiene is practiced and monitored closely. Washing hands intently and re-gloving is a regular.

How do you fund the cost of the meals you prepare?Norb: The annual Soup Supper at St. Wenceslaus held in February is our primary fundraiser. This year provided over a $6,000 profit. Through the year there are also peo-

ple who make support donations. We also are partnered with a food redistribution organization which allows us to purchase food for less than retail value.

That takes a lot of coordination and effort on your part.What are some ways we can help Catholic Charities? Norb: Pray! Pray that Catholic Charities can sustain through these times, that staff continues to make deci-sions that benefit those who we serve, and that staff and guests may remain healthy amid the virus. I also ask that you pray in gratitude for all that God has provided for those who we serve. Lastly, if you are so inclined, reach out to Catholic Charities to volunteer or donate.

Anything else you would like us to know?Norb: I would always welcome questions about vol-unteer activities at Catholic Charities or St. Wenceslaus Soup Kitchen (monthly meal preparation). Thank You.

As you saw in the bulletin last week, Catholic Charities is in desperate need of some basic supplies (thermom-eters, bleach wipes, hand sanitizers), as well as home-made cloth masks for their clients. We will be collecting these supplies on two consecutive Tuesdays, April 28th and May 5th. Any requested items can be dropped off in the west entryway of the church on these Tuesdays. Norb will pick them up on April 29th and May 6th for an early morning delivery to Catholic Charities. FAITH FORMATION ANDYOUTH MINISTRY

2nd Grade First CommunionOur second graders have been so busy in pre-

paring for their big day when they will be welcomed to the Lords table for the very first time! We are excited for this big day; this excitement will just be building a

bit longer. We have postponed our First Eucharist Masses from the end of April and beginning of May to a date down the road. We will have one big celebratory Mass, hopefully sometime in June!

What a celebration this will be; it will just look a little different. We have found we are resilient people and can adapt to change and different can be great! Please watch the bulletin. We will keep you informed as things are up-dated.

Confirmation Update:Confirmation has often been called “the Sacrament in search of a theology.” In these days it has become a Sac-rament in search of a date. Rest assured we are pray-ing hard for you and your candidates! Also, if you still have outstanding paperwork to turn in, please do so as quickly as possible. Vacation Bible School ~It is with great sadness that I am letting you know that VBS has been canceled for this summer. In talking it over with our counterparts at FaithPoint, we determined that to keep all of our children and numerous volunteers safe, it would be best to not put people in this close environ-ment. We hope to be back next summer with a bigger, better, Jesus-filled program to bring all of our children into a closer relationship with the one who loves us best ~ JESUS!
