2013 CONCERT SERIES

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Worship and Arts Staff of Brentwood United Methodist Church, I welcome you to our 2013 Concert Series. We are pleased to offer a wide range of excellent, one-hour concert opportunities every third Sunday at 4 p.m. (with the exception of June, July and August).

Four of the concerts will be offered by our resident Nexus Chamber Orchestra, an orchestra of professional Nashville musicians. The other four concerts will feature artists of Brentwood United Methodist Church, joined at times by other professional musicians.

We hope to see you at one of our 2013 Concert Series events, and we invite you to worship with us at any time.

January 20 • 4 pm • ChapelThe Artistry of the Classical GuitarJohn Johns, concert guitarist

At his New York debut at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times praised John Johns as a “first-rate

performer with sure fingers and a firm technique…a sensitive instrumentalist.” The Guitar Review described him as “an

unforgettable guitarist!” The Nashville Tennessean called him “a superb musician” and “a classical guitar wizard” while England’s

Classical Guitar said that he was “always musical and often poetic.” Johns first received national recognition as a student at

Peabody Conservatory of Music when he appeared on the Westinghouse-ABC television special “A Pride of Guitars.”

He performed to critical acclaim on National Public Radio’s “Concert Guitar” which featured some of the world’s leading

guitarists, among them Manuel Barrueco, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Leo Brouwer, Sharon Isbin, and Oscar Ghiglia. His recording,

“Johns Johns Plays Bach, Bennett, Brouwer and Others,” has received international acclaim by leading guitar periodicals and

journals. John Johns holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he was a scholarship student of Aaron Shearer, and

from George Peabody College. He is Chair of the Guitar Department at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University.

The Nexus Chamber Orchestra was formed by a group of like-minded recording studio musicians looking for a

performing outlet beyond the recording studio. The ensemble’s core players are prominent members of the

Nashville String Machine, Nashville’s preeminent recording string group for the past 25 years. The ensemble has played on literally

thousands of recordings - from Contemporary Christian to Country to Rock to Heavy Metal - and on the albums of such

artists as Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Casting Crowns, Elton John, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Kid Rock,

Lynyrd Skynyrd, Martina McBride, Neil Young, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Vince Gill and many, many more. Nexus is proud to

call Williamson County our home-base and the site of our primary concert series. The ensemble’s founders, and many

members of the chamber orchestra, are residents of Williamson County and are excited to become Williamson County’s first

professional chamber orchestra. Their home venue is the Chapel at Brentwood United Methodist Church.

A Concert of Appalachian Gospel MusicAnna Grace Kimbrough, Sarah Davison, & Kiley Phillips

In a world where conformity is king and following the crowd is practically a survival instinct, the women of High Road III, an award-winning Appalachian gospel group from Nashville who just happen to be the best of friends, have always preferred the road less traveled. Sarah Davison, Anna Grace Kimbrough, and Kiley Phillips are all graduates of Belmont University’s prestigious School of Music. Hoping to encourage their listeners to join them on the narrow path, the music of High Road III highlights how we are all designed to serve God and that our lives are actually maximized when we’re following the unique plan God has in mind. Holding fast to the message that guides them each and every day, High Road III isn’t just another group of talented musicians who play songs that are close to their hearts. Instead, they feel incredibly blessed to provide long-time fans and new listeners alike with the message of hope found in the Gospel and pledge never to forget their down-home country roots in the process.

May 19 • 4 pm • ChapelA Keyboard KaleidoscopePatsy Wade, pianist; Gregg Bunn, organist

BUMC pianist, Patsy Wade, and organist, Gregg Bunn, join

forces on the Sanctuary’s Bösendorfer grand piano and mighty pipe organ for a concert of keyboard solos and duets.

In addition, they will collaborate with other BUMC instrumentalists for a concert not to be missed!

Patsy Wade maintains an active career as recitalist, collaborative pianist-accompanist, and teacher of piano. She has won

particular recognition for her collaboration with singers in interpreting twentieth century music and has to her credit multiple

premieres of works for voice and piano by American composers. Ms. Wade received her Bachelor of Music from Birmingham

Southern College and her Master of Music from George Peabody College. She has accompanied BUMC youth choirs every summer (since 1992), touring the U.S. with traditional choral repertoire as well as staged musical productions, on outreach ministry mission trips. In addition to previous appointment to faculty positions at

Austin Peay State University, she holds faculty appointments at Belmont University and at the Blair School of Music/Vanderbilt

University. Currently, Ms. Wade also serves as pianist at BUMC and directs the JoySound Orchestra.

A native of Forsyth, Georgia, Dr. Gregg Bunn began his early organ study at age 17 with Gerald Carper and earned degrees in organ and church music from Shorter University and Indiana University where he studied with Dr. Peter DeWitt and Dr. Marilyn Keiser, respectively. In 2004, he completed doctoral study in organ performance and church music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he studied with Dr. Albert Travis. During his time in Nashville, he has also had the opportunity to coach with Dr. Wilma Jensen. An active member of the American Guild of Organists, Gregg has won first place at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of the Atlanta chapter’s annual competition. In 1996 and 1997, he was a national finalist in the Music Teachers National Association collegiate organ competition. Recently, Gregg was first place winner of a national organ competition sponsored by North Naples United Methodist Church in Naples, Florida. He has played solo organ concerts at notable churches, such as The Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta, GA, and Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX. As an accompanist, Gregg has traveled with choirs nationally and internationally, and has performed with these ensembles in the Meyerson Symphony Center (Dallas, TX), the Schermerhorn Symphony Center (Nashville, TN), The Cathedral of Notre Dame (Paris, France), and Ely Cathedral (Cambridge, England). Gregg has served churches in Georgia, Indiana, and Texas, and has taught on the adjunct faculties of Dallas Baptist University, Mercer University’s McAfee School of Theology, and, most recently, at Belmont University. Currently, Gregg is the organist at Brentwood United Methodist Church.

October 20 • 4 pm • SanctuaryA Concert of Classical and Sacred MusicStephen Nielson, pianist

BUMC welcomes back to its concert series pianist Stephen Nielson. Distinguished in both classical and

sacred music, Stephen Nielson is widely regarded as one of the distinctive artists of our time.

In 2008, BUMC was honored to have Mr. Nielson dedicate the Sanctuary’s Bösendorfer imperial grand piano.Hailing a performance in Germany, the Berlin Morgenpost

said, “Highly sensitive, articulate artistry,” while Brussels’ Le Soir exclaimed, “Exciting and masterful playing.”

His discography includes recordings of the classical repertoire, music for piano and cello, and hymn tunes in the classical style.

His writing achievements appear in the catalogues of several American publishers. Since 1971 he has been one-half of

Nielson & Young, one of the most acclaimed duo-piano teams of our time.

On this concert, Mr. Nielson will also collaborate with BUMC organist, Gregg Bunn, in a tour de force

concert to be sure!
