THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY

STANDING OUT

26th April 2019

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to the Academy after the Easter Break. In my last report I promised that we would have some exciting things happening in the run up to our break in the summer.

Les Hall - Academy Principal

Good Luck Molly

Best wishes

Well Done Morgan!

This year Mounts Bay celebrates 60 years of providing learning to the community of Penwith.

Celebrations will take place during the remainder of the academic year, with a variety of events and learning experiences that will involve our whole community.

We would like to produce an exhibition showcasing the life of the school since its inception, its students past and present and how our current students see their future.

We need your help

We would like to digitally capture any any photographs, stories or even videos of things that have happened over the last 60 years, so start looking in those lofts, cupboards and drawers! If you have anything you think could be of interest, please bring it into school and leave it with Mrs Davies on Reception. We will then take your name, capture the artefact and return it to you. We would also like to interview anyone who has an interesting tale to tell about their life at Mounts Bay. Our students will be out and about in the community producing podcasts that we will be showing on our social media feed, which will then be added to a special section of our website.

The whole celebration will culminate in a number of festival events over the summer Quadmester, including Science, Art, Literature, Music and Sport.

We will also be holding a very special celebration at St John’s Hall to showcase everything that has made Mounts Bay students so fulfilled over the last 60 years, which include some very special guests!

So keep your eyes peeled; tickets will be limited due to the capacity of the hall and I guarantee that it will be an event not to be missed.

I cannot wait to see all of the treasures we will find when looking back over the last 60 years and I am sure you will find the experience fascinating too.

Dynamic dialogue encourages students to use their writing to bring their learning to life, making their work more vibrant and memorable.

We encourage our students to brainstorm ideas in groups and act out learning conversations with each other before putting pen to paper.

Dynamic Dialogue

The Year 7 Element groups have been presenting their final projects to one another during this weeks lessons. Students developed a keynote presentation identifying the problems caused by marine litter whilst using their own investigation and field trip results to pose real questions and respond to the essential question: How can a plastic bottle impact the world?

Year 11 are at the end of their Business GCSE and have rounded off their study with a business pitch - Dragons Den style! Over the two years students have developed a product, carried out market research and created a brand with its own identify and promotional techniques. Students excelled and showed brilliant commitment to the subject and were able to confidently analyse the impact of good branding. A special mention to Madison whose confident and professional pitch blew Mr Jenkin away. Well done Year 11.

MBA is a partner school to Voice21 (which links to School21 - the oracy based school in London) and this week their representative, Katie Fitzsimmons, came in to talk to staff about how we use speech within our lessons to encourage and enhance learning. My aim is for us to work as a team to break down the embarrassment related to standing up and talking in front of peers. Even the most confident and chatty students are often reluctant to do presentations. Speaking out loud needs practice and it is something that needs to built upon and embedded from the moment students join MBA.

On Friday 5th April students from Exeter University visited Mounts Bay Academy to run a workshop with Year 9 scholars students. The aim of the programme was to educate Year 9 students about university life and support them into higher education. Students

will then go on to graduate as a scholar in Year 11.

Finding out about university life involves current university students coming in and running a variety of sessions at MBA, including a question and answer session, as well as other activities including team building and ‘discovering something new’.

Everyone who was selected to be part of the prestigious and insightful scholars programme thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and enjoyed learning something new. Thank you to Exeter University for organising this event!

This is just one of three workshops so keep an eye out for more in the future.

The Humphry Davy Prize  began when Sir Humphry Davy left  money in his Will to be invested to provide a prize for a student who is outstanding and proficient in the sciences. Although the prize ceased for a period of time, it was renewed in 1988 and

Penzance Town Council now administer the Prize Fund and make an award each year.

Mounts Bay Academy  students have won for five consecutive years and we have maintained this high achievement by winning again this year!

Lilyjane, Mia and Zoe put together an impressive nomination piece. They talked about how they identified and overcame their different struggles in science GCSE subjects. Their inspirational stories show how true learning is based not so much on how well you are doing, but how you can turn a struggle into a success!

Well done Lilyjane, Mia and Zoe. Thank you for sharing your experiences so eloquently.

REAL Achievement

Emma Dyke has been awarded a Da Vinci for her exceptional outcome in REAL Project this year. In the design of her own original festival concept she

developed her own branding, advertising and merchandise to promote her festival. Emma's final exhibition demonstrated all of the hard work she had put in and also the independence and planning it had taken to reach this outcome. Brilliant work Emma, well done!

EXCELLENCE REWARD

The World Challenge India Expedition team spent two days on Dartmoor at the start of the Easter holidays in preparation for their trip.

Working as a team, they overcame a nine mile trek, rescued a ‘missing’ Mr Helliwell and even transported him using a makeshift stretcher made from their group kit!

Cooking dinner outdoors and camping overnight was a new experience for many of the team who did fantastically well. It was a brilliant weekend of learning, new skills and solving problems in the beautiful outdoors of Dartmoor.

On Tuesday 25th April, the U14 girls’ football team were crowned County Champions after beating Launceston College 4-1 in the final at Sticker Football Club.

Launceston took an early lead within the first five minutes of kick off with a strong shot from just outside the 18 yard box, which arrowed in to the top corner of the net. Mounts Bay reacted quickly with a superb solo goal from Mari. Mari found herself in on goal with only the goal keeper to beat after a perfectly weighted pass from Rebecca, Mari calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net past the goalie. Mounts Bay soon after went 2-1 ahead after Mari was fouled just outside the area, Rebecca took the free kick which was perfectly dispatched towards the far post and Mari arrived to head the ball into the top corner of the net from 6 yards out. Mounts Bay finished the first half 2-1 ahead.

In the second half Mounts Bay maintained their fantastic work ethic shown and managed to increase their lead early. Again, Rebecca was the provider from a corner kick and Mari scored to complete her hat trick (3 goals) with a left footed volley into

the bottom corner of the net from approximately 8 yards out. The final goal of the match was a goal, worthy to complete any showcase final, Rebecca scored a 30 yard wonder goal where she picked the ball up in the centre of the pitch and showed great awareness to spot the goal keeper off her line. She then executed the shot brilliantly to lob the goal keeper.

Overall, all the girls showed fantastic commitment and energy to defeat a strong Launceston team. Well done girls, you are the County U14 Champions!

There was no time to rest during the Easter holidays for National Champion Ellie Dash, with the Regional Performance coach Richard Poole coming down to run a two and a half hour session. Ellie was accompanied by some Plymouth Amateur Rowing Club

team mates.

Richard went through some rowing fundamental movements specifically to rowers and some peak performance tests. He was very impressed with the school and the High Performance approach, amazed that the pupils get various performance workshops and mentoring.

James (10 Orange) and his sister Jennifer (8 Red) had a busy Easter break in Birmingham taking part in the ICO (International Combat Organisation) British Open Championships 2019. This event is open to kickboxers and karate fighters across all

disciplines from all around the UK and is one of the qualifying events for the ICO World Cup 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland later in the year.

A jam packed event, streaming live via the Kihapp website, covering points fighting, ring fighting, light continuous and full contact, all competitors had to weigh in by 10am. Although they all arrived for that time, it was a long wait for the senior level fighters and it wasn't until 8pm in the evening that James actually went out onto the mats to compete. After a very long day of waiting around and despite an empty tummy, seeing his sister injured and not a lot of motivation, fuelled by adrenaline alone James weighing only 63kg fought his heart out and in his highest category, the -75kg,

James proudly came second beating some very big lads to win a Silver medal.

An excellent result and James now qualifies and has earned his place on the England team for the ICO World Cup 2019. Excellent work James.

Day Two resulted in the Team getting into a fantastic winning streak with each player performing either at their peak or beyond. The team scored wins against Northumberland (6/4), Cumbria (8/2) and Gloucestershire (5/5 winning on a count back score). Cornwall won their Group and moved into the 17-20 final positioning

group for the final two days.

Day Three was a roller coaster of emotions with breathtaking badminton. The Duchy won 6/4 against Cheshire, and drew 5/5 against Lincolnshire (losing on a count back by one).

Day Four saw the teams’ final match against Nottinghamshire, a strong team led by an England International Coach. And what a match it was! Cornwall triumphed with a 7/3 win. The final Cornish Team position was 17th.

International Year of the Periodic Table

Phosphorous

Atomic Number 15

Elemental phosphorus exists in two major forms, white phosphorus and red phosphorus. Phosphorus is essential to life. Phosphates are components in DNA. It was isolated in 1669 as white phosphorus which emitted a faint glow. Its name comes from Greek mythology (Φωσφόρος meaning light bearer),  which is also a reference to the planet Venus. The

majority of phosphorus compounds mined are used for fertilisers.

2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table, which is an iconic image and a vital tool to all who learn and work in science at

all stages of their learning and careers.

During the course of the year we will be writing about some elements and what we do with them at the Academy and what they are used for in the ‘real world’.
