CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENTThe outcomes of the GRF One Health Summit Davos in 2012 and 2013 have shown that One Health has evolved to a broad and holistic paradigm that addresses and frames the complex interactions between human, animal and environmental health.

In today’s globalized world, no particular sector of society or single professional discipline has the knowledge and capacity to prevent emerging or re-emerging diseases. Only by breaking down the barriers between disciplines, sectors, and agencies, but also between the individual specialists, we can combine our collective expertise and spark the innovation needed to anticipate and combat serious challenges to the health of people, livestock, pets, and wildlife and to the integrity of ecosystems. Underlying factors, like climate change, resource scarcity, or microbial resistance to antibiotics are additional implications which interact with social determinants and consequences including politics, conflicts, human rights, forced migration and cultural and religious factors, as well as their philosophical and ethical underpinnings.

With our 3rd GRF One Health Summit 2015, we aim to further strengthen the holistic, inter- and trans- disciplinary One Health paradigm. One Health as holistic collaboration among multiple health professions such as veterinary and human medicine, together with experts from environment, wildlife, livestock, agriculture, food security, etc. can substantially contribute to reduce existing, emerging and re-emerging global threats and support the overall strategy for the post 2015 sustainable development agenda. This is an important, conceptual, political and scientific challenge for public health, the whole scientific community, and for all of society.

The One Health paradigm will be helpful in tackle the worst of current problems at the human-animal-environment interface thus fostering a healthier and more sustainable way of life on our Planet.

We are looking very forward to your participation at our conference in early October in Davos.

Fostering transdisciplinary collaboration for global public and animal health

THE 3RD GRF ONE HEALTH SUMMIT 2015

The 3rd GRF One Health Summit 2015 will be a truly global event. Bringing together approximately 500 experts form the fields of public health, veterinary medicine, agriculture, food safety and security, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and sustainable development.

The conference promotes and fosters an integrative approach in managing health risks at the interface of human-, animal- and environmental health with a strong link to sustainable development.

Striving for intensified collaboration among experts and practitioners from the different sectors and disciplines tangent to such a comprehensive health perspective, will provide significant added value to identify cost-effective measures.

This integrative management strategy will be a key tool to ensure sustainable public health in an era of climate change, resource depletion, land degradation, urbanisation, food insecurity and development challenges.

THE GRF ONE HEALTH APPROACH AN INTEGRATIVE HEALTH RISK MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVETowards integrative health risk management through collaboration among sectors and disciplines for cost-effective overall risk reduction.

GRF Davos aims to pool the concepts of One Health and integrative risk management to save lives and livelihoods, improve public health and reduce costs.

Many emerging health issues are linked to increasing contact between humans and animals, the industrialization of food production, and environmental pollution. Global change has created new threats to the health of both animals and humans. These complex interactions impacting human health require to be dealt with by applying an integrative health risk management approach, which acknowledges the systemic interconnections of human, animal and environmental health. In addition, this approach includes the factors of prevention, intervention and recovery/rehabilitation. Being a global movement at the interface of science, society, policy and practice, One Health is interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial.

Page 5: 3rd GRF One Health Summit 2015 - Conference Brochure

5

For many years the One Health approach was limited to an interdisciplinary collaboration in human and veterinary medicine with substantial added value in zoonoses control and related health service provision.

One Health has evolved into a broad and holistic paradigm enabling the inclusion of an ecological dimension, and most recently the economic and social dimensions addressing equity, governance, justice, livelihood, and welfare.

One Health has moved beyond the status of a mere concept, to becoming a truly global movement at the interface of science, society, policy and practice. This movement is deeply interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial and provides a fascinating, powerful framework that a variety of professional communities and social groups can adhere to.

The One Health paradigm will be key in reversing the worst of current problems at the human-animal-environment and development interface, thus fostering a more sustainable way of life on our planet. Keeping in mind that more than half of the worldwide population is living in urban areas, and that the rural exodus continues to grow; One Health may become a crucial approach to successfully cope with all the drivers and consequences in urbanization dynamics.

FROM A HOLISTIC PARADIGM TO A GLOBAL MOVEMENT
