Overlay number 1 of .Appendix III shows the positions of units under the control of the 3d :SatteJ.ion, let 1-!arines during September 1952.

During the period. on line the batteJ.ion maintained operational con­trol of the Rescue Task Force. The task organization of this unit ia con­tained in the Ju.l.y, CC!I.!-!A1ID D!AR!. ~he miss:!. on. of this f'cree ie: prepe...~ to execute rescue mission on order whenever the Ul'l' Truce TBI!Ill1 1a in session at Panmunjom. While in reserve the battalion furnished a forward and rear TACP aud an artillery Forward Observer Team necesaary for the operation.

At OlOOI on 5 Sept the enem;r attacloed tba Eas;r Company, 1st Marines po­sition n.nd.er cover of heavy e.rtil.lery and. mortar fire. The enemy used p~ technics to control their infantey movements. Friendl;r forces used artil­l.sr;y and mortar "boxft concentrations in combating tba e!l8llly. Ea.s;r Oompan;y, let Marines reported that ths enem:r walked in the initial attack apparent­l;r confident that their preparatoey fires had neutrelized ths position. Shortly after the attack on Easy Company, Item Comprui.J", 1st Marla.es repor­ted 50..6o enem;r attackine ths center platoon of that compan;r. Item Oom­:pe.ey sll.lmised that the enemy had ovel'-extended their attack on Easy Oo!!!­pe.ny. This group of ene1D7 broke contact and wheel.ed to-rd. Ee.ay Oompe.ny's left flank but came under their own small arms fire. The enerzy attacking the first platoon of Easy Company, overran 6o yards of their position but a collllterattack was launched. by Easy and the position regaiMd. On 11 Sept, Dog Company, 1st Marinos cE>.jjo under operationaJ. control of this battalion alld relieved George Compa.cy, 1st Harines in their sector c>: responsibility. George Conpa.ny proceeded to tho 2nd l!a.ttaJ.ion, 1st l~arineo reserve area. and cai:le undor operational. control of that unit. Eacy Company. lst !--!Brines relieved P...ow Company, lst 2-Iar-inos a.n.d came under operational. control of this battalion. In tho early morlting How Company. 1st Marines proceeded to the 2nd llattalio~. 1st 1-Zarinos reserve area and came under control o:f that unit.

At lOOOI on 14 Sept, this battalion cl.osed tho CP at CT 02"ID07 and opened a now CP at CT Oi()Ol2 (Hap of Y.orea, 1:25,000, shoot &527 I NW). The following day Dog Company, 1st Harines proceeded to our reserve area and came under control of this battaJ.ion.

On 18 Sept= Goorge Coxapany. 1st !-'.a.rincs reverted to parent control.. The following day George Compa.cy, 1st ~!a.rincs, minus one (1) platoon loft the reserve area ruu', came under operationaJ. control of tho 2nd lla.ttalion, J.Bu ~~a.r:i.nes. Easy Company, 1st i·larinos closed our reserve area and came under control of this battalion. On 20 Sept, Easy Company, 1st t.larines and ono (1) platoon of C.eorge Compan..y, l.st Marines left o-ur reserve area and r&­verted to tho control of the 2nd lla.ttal.ion, 1st l.farines. Due to the tacti­cal. situation t>JO platoons of George Company were :Placed on OP 2 and one (l.) platoon took a position in tho l'an!numjom corrido;-.

Marines from the 9<JOl AAA. Gun Battalion for two da;ys training prior to joining their assigned units. A training schadul.& was pi~zA.red. for these men which included 8 hours of smal.l unit defensive tactics, 4 houra on field fortifications and 4 hours familiarisation firing.

J'rom the period 17 Sept to 30 Sept this battalion furnished one (1) platoon n58htJ.y as a standb)" platoon. ~his platoon left the re­serve area and came under the control of the 2nd :Battalion, let Marines. Each moruing the platoon retu.rnad. ravarting to parent control. The remainder of the battalion has been working 100 percent on the improve­ment o:f Line Wyoming (A:9pendix III, overlay #2, Line Wyoming).

On 16 Sept, this battalion prepared Retirement Plans .A.13LE and B.A.uR and a Coc.n:iere.ttack Plan. Du.e to the taetieal. situation these plans were constructed for this battalion minus one (1) rifle comp&nT. ~hese plans will go into effect if the en~y penetr.ates either the right or center sector of the division :front or if this battalion were oalled u.pon to counterattack to restore the present MLR. Line Wyoming wou.ld be o:f prime inq>ortance in the case of Betirement Plans ABLE and UK!!lR. :Blocking positions and counterattack rou.tes have been desig­nated for the Cow:ttare.ttack Plan. On 25 Sept. these pl.!t!lS ~ere pu.b­lished to the battalion staf:f and company Camnanders. During the per­iod from 25 Sept to 30 Sept the com:pany commanders and staff officers made physical reconnaissances o:f the assigned areas •

Dr. S. L. Jukofsq arrived on 4 September to replace Dr. J. T. Craighead aa battalion surgeon.

The battal.ion aid station along with the Commend Post mowd from 0... hind HU1 229 to regimental reserve on 14 September.
