cw4 nnul 9 eport of the Councilfor the Year ended 31st December, 1963
To the Members of the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland:
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Your Council has great pleasure in presenting the Annual Repott, Statement of Accounts, Balance Sheet and GeneralReview of the year's work of the Association for the year ended 31st December 1963, a year which we believe to be thegreatest in the history of the Association.
In every respect the 1963 Show was a great success with near record entries, magnificent exhibits supported by topquality exhibits and an excellent Ring programme. With the exception of heavy rainfall on Tuesday, the weather conditionswere ideal. The Show yielded the best financial return to date but it must be remembered, however, that in anticipation ofa great Exhibition in 1964 and in an endeavour to keep step with the progress of the State, many improvements are beingeffected and last year's surplus will be absorbed on these substantial improvements.
The Show attracted a grand total of 20,909 entries and the sectional entries were as follows: Horses 4,030; Beef andFat Cattle 1,293; Dairy Cattle 1,457, Sheep and Wool 582; Pigs 708; Goats 56; Poultry 3,876; Dogs 1,352; Dairy Produce206; District Exhibits 4; Junior Farmers' Interclub and Fruit 10; Wines 664; Apiculture 185; Fine Arts 1,697; Needlework468; Cookery 754; Schoolwork 713; District Fruit Exhibits 6; Horticulture 1,110; Judging Competitions 458; Sheep Dog Trials69; Woodchopping 912; Pasture Improvement 97; Water Harvesting 31; Pisciculture 114; Cotton 27; Tobacco 36.
Council is appreciative of the support received from 4,448 ordinary Members and 2,907 Associate Members whosesubscriptions during the year under review totalled £29,992.
The Association's Field Competitions for Pasture Improvement and Water Harvesting continue to play an importantpart in stimulating interest in pastures, water conservation and irrigation throughout Queensland. Entries were received fromall parts of the State and highly successful Field Days were held on prize-winning properties at St. George, Pittsworth, Mun-dubbera, Beenleigh, Loganholme, Biloela and Rockhampton.
Council again staged a Symposium on the day before the Show with the subject being "wool." This day-long Sym-posium was attended by some 600 persons and was well reported in the Press. It is felt that much benefit was derived fromthe addresses delivered and the frank manner in which matters were discussed. Council is of the opinion that these Symposiaare making a real contribution to industry. Council has already announced that this year's Symposium will be on the DairyIndustry.
The Show was officially opened by His Excellency, the Administrator, The Hon. Sir Allan Mansfield, K.C.M.G. The4th Field Regiment, R.A.A., together with the Northern Command Band, supplied a Guard of Honour which added to thebrilliance of the occasion.
Your Association was entrusted by the State Government with the honour of staging a Bushmen's Carnival as theCitizens' Welcome to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Brisbane in March. At the conclusion of the func-tion, Her Majesty conveyed her personal thanks to the Association for the part played by it in organising the welcome.
The Association also made the grounds available to the Government the following day for the purpose of staging aschool children's Welcome for the Royal couple. Before leaving Brisbane Her Majesty and His Royal Highness presented theAssociation with a personally autographed photograph.
FINANCE: A perusal of the Financial Statement reveals that our financial position is sound. Council proposes con-tinuing its policy of spending our show profits in substantial improvements. A total of £27,815 was spent on capital improve-ments during the year together with an amount of £46,514 on maintenance. Major improvements during the year includedthe construction of a new Dog Pavilion (which has been completed since the Show with the exception of some internal fit-tings), the rebuilding of a further portion of the Dairy Cattle Pavilion, redecking and the provision of new seats on the topstory of the Ernest Baynes Stand, the erection of amenities in the Horse Section, the remodelling of the Veterinary Surgeon'soffice, rebuilding a section of the wall of the Industrial Pavilion and extensive repairs to Affleck House.
The Association has now obtained possession of all of the properties resumed for it in the area adjacent to ConstanceStreet and work has now commenced on this site on the construction of a new Agricultural Hall to measure 27,000 square feetin which it is proposed to stage District Exhibits, Junior Farmers' Exhibits, Fruit and other agricultural products. It isestimated that this building will cost £45,000. The price paid for the land in question was in excess of the actual valuation, consequently the difference between the value of the land and the purchase price must be written off. An amount of £3,690being the difference between the original purchase price of the land and the value of the land as now remaining has beenwritten off. A start also has been made in the erection of a new Dairy Hall to cost approximately £63,000, and in this regardthe Association is receiving valuable financial support from the following sections of the Industry, viz.: the Butter MarketingBoard £30,000; Queensland Cold Storage Co-operative Federation Limited £15,000; Cheese Marketing Board £1,000;Queensland United Foods Limited £1,000; and Norco Co-operative Limited £1,000. Our grateful thanks are extended to theseorganisations for their generosity in this regard.
As mentioned in previous years our only means of completing capital improvements is from profits and by borrowing.Consequently it will be seen that our projected improvements for the year ending 31st December 1964 will stretch theAssociation's finances.
The question of establishing the Association's offices on the Showgrounds is still receiving consideration.
