Precautions

Thermal Protection CircuitBe sure the temperature inside the vehicle isbetween +60°C (+140°F) and –10°C (+14°F)before attempting to play a disc. If the tempera-ture is over +60°C (+140°F), the protectioncircuit functions to stop the CD player, and "HI-TEMP" is displayed.

Moisture CondensationYou may notice the CD playback soundwavering due to condensation. If this happens,remove the disc from the player and wait aboutan hour for the moisture to evaporate.

Damaged DiscDo not attempt to play cracked, warped, ordamaged discs. Playing a bad disc couldseverely damage the playback mechanism.

MaintenanceIf you have problems, do not attempt to repairthe unit yourself. Return it to your Alpine dealeror the nearest Alpine Service Station forservicing.

Irregular Shaped DiscsMake sure the discs you use in this unit do nothave any irregularities. The outer and inneredges should be round and smooth. Use ofirregularly shaped discs may cause damage tothe mechanism.

New DiscsAs a protective measure, the CD player willautomatically eject discs that have either beeninserted incorrectly or have irregular surfaces. Ifa new disc is ejected immediately after loading,use your finger to feel around the outer edge ofthe CD and its center hole. If you feel any smallbumps or irregularities, this could inhibit properloading of the disc. To remove the bumps, rubthe inside edge of the hole and outside edge ofthe disc with a ball-point pen or other suchinstrument, then insert the disc again.

Handling MagazineWhen discs are being exchanged in the 3DA-W882E, the magazine is pushed out from thechanger. While this operation is in progress, donot try to pull out the magazine or stop itsmovement in any way, as this could causedamage to the mechanism. In addition, beaware of the changer's operation so it will notinterfere with your driving. For example, beforechanging gears, check the position of themagazine so as not to hit it while it is changingdiscs.

Precautions

Tape SlackCheck and make sure any slack in the tape istaken up before inserting the tape into the unit.A loose tape can get caught in the mechanismand cause damage to the unit and the tapeitself. Tighten the tape by inserting a pencil or asimilar instrument into the spindle hole and turnuntil all the slack has been taken up.

Excessively Thin TapeC-120 type cassette tapes are not recom-mended for use in automobile tape players.

Precision Tape MechanismPrevent any foreign objects from entering thecassette opening as the precision mechanismand tape head may be damaged.Never play dirty or dusty tapes – they candamage the tape head.

Tape Head CleaningPeriodic cleaning (approximately every 20hours of use) of the tape head with a wet typehead-cleaning cassette tape (available at audiostores) is necessary for best performance.

Fuse ReplacementWhen replacing the fuse(s), the replacementmust be of the same amperage as shown onthe fuse holder. If the fuse blows more thanonce, carefully check all electrical connectionsfor shorted circuitry. Also have your vehicle’svoltage regulator checked.

Initial System Start-Up

Immediately after installing or applying power tothe unit, it should be initialized. At the upper-leftcorner of the front panel is a small button. Usinga pencil or other pointed object, press this resetbutton to complete the initialization procedure.

Turning Power On and Off

Press the PWR button to turn on the unit.

Note: The unit can be turned on by pressingany other button except the eject ( h ),O/C and CLK buttons.

The volume level gradually increases to theprevious level you were listening to before theunit was turned off.

Press the PWR button again to turn off the unit.

Subwoofer On and OffThis unit is not equipped with a low pass filter.Turn on the Subwoofer Output when anamplifier having the built-in filter is connected todrive your subwoofer.

Press and hold the SUB W. button for at least 3seconds.With each press, Subwoofer is toggled On orOff.

Notes:• Initial mode is "SUBW OFF."• Leave the "SUBW OFF" as long as the

Subwoofer output is not being used.• When the subwoofer is turned on, the

DemonstrationEqualizer/surround/BBE demonstrationfunctions are provided in this unit.

Press the 9 (TUNE) button to illuminate theDX indicator in the display. With the DX modeactivated, both strong and weak stations will betuned automatically.Press again to return to the local mode. The DXindicator will turn off and only strong stationswill be tuned.

Manual Storing of StationPresets

1. Tune in the desired radio station you wish tostore in the preset memory.

2. Press and hold any one of the presetbuttons (1 through 6 ) for at least 2seconds. The frequency display will beginto blink.

3. Press the preset button into which you wishto store the station while the display isblinking (within 5 seconds).The display stops blinking once the stationhas been memorized. The display shows theband, preset No. with a triangle ( ) and thestation frequency memorized.

4. Repeat the procedure to store 5 otherstations onto the same band.To use this procedure for other bands,simply select the band desired and followsteps 1 – 3 above.

A total of 24 stations can be stored in the presetmemory (6 stations for each band; FM1, FM2,AM and D.A.P.).

Note: If you store a station in a preset memorywhich already has a station, the currentstation will be cleared and replaced withthe new station.

Mono/Stereo Switching

"ST" indicator appears when a stereo station istuned in.Press the 8 (MONO) button to switch fromstereo to monaural FM reception. This will helpin reducing the noise of weak FM Stereobroadcasts. Automatic Memory ofStation Presets


Press the 0 (A. MEMO) button. The fre-quency on the display continues to changewhile the automatic memory is in progress.The tuner will automatically seek and store 6strong stations in the selected band in order ofsignal strength.When the automatic memory has beencompleted, the tuner goes to the station storedin the preset location No. 1.

Insert your discs (up to 3) into the disc slots ofthe CD magazine with the label side facing up.

Insert the CD magazine all the way into the3DA-W882E with the arrow pointing toward theunit as shown here.

To remove discs from the CD magazine, firstfind the lever corresponding to the CD youwould like to remove. Push the lever away fromthe magazine. The disc will come halfway outfrom the CD magazine. Carefully grasp theedge of the disc as shown and remove.

Note: Hold the disc so you will not leavefingerprints on the disc surface (refer to"Disc Care" section).

Notes:1. Do not insert heat-deformed discs into the

CD magazine.2. Do not forcibly remove the CD magazine by

hand.3. Only one disc can be inserted in each

housing slot. Attempting to insert anotherdisc may cause damage.

4. Only compact discs containing the markshown can be used.

Notes:• When the display shows "FULL DATA", the

• The CD Shuttle memory capacity dependsupon the model being used.

How to Use the FunctionModeWhen the 12-disc CD Shuttle is connected, adisc can be directly selected.

Press the FUNC button. The FUNC indicatorlights up and the unit enters the FUNC mode.

When a cassette is already inserted, press theSOURCE button to select the TAPE mode. Themode will change each time the button ispressed.

Dolby B/C NR (Noise Re-duction)

Press the 7 (B/C NR) button in the tapemode to select the Dolby B NR or C NR to playa Dolby B NR or C NR encoded tape respec-tively. The B or C indicator appears in thedisplay to show your selection. A reduction intape hiss should also be noticed, with aproperly encoded tape.

To deactivate the Dolby NR mode, press the7 (B/C NR) button until the B NR and C NRindicators disappear.

Repeat Play

Press the 8 (RPT) button and the unit entersthe Repeat mode. The current program will beplayed back repeatedly.

Press the 8 (RPT) button to stop the repeatplay.

Fast Forward and Rewind

Press the REW or FF ([ or ] ) buttonduring tape play to fast rewind or forward thetape respectively.The tape side indicator ( or ) blinks.When the end of the tape is reached in therewind mode, the player stops automaticallyand begins playing from the beginning of thesame side. When the end of the tape is reachedin the fast forward mode, the player stopsautomatically and begins playing from thebeginning of the opposite side.

Press the 0 button to stop fast rewinding orforwarding to resume tape play.The tape side indicator stops blinking.

Blank Skip (B.SKIP)

Press the 9 (B.SKIP) button during tape playto skip over parts of the tape without soundlasting 15 seconds or longer. The Blank Skipfunction will be highlighted in the display.

Pressing the button again cancels the blankskip mode.

Selecting BBE ModeThe BBE (Barcus Berry Electronics) processorinstalled in this unit is designed to correct thephase distortion inherent in most loudspeakerdesigns. Ensuring the phase integrity of thesignal driving the speakers improves theaccurate reproduction of the sound. When usedin conjunction with the equalizer and sound fieldeffects, optimum sound space enhancementcan take place.

Press the BBE button.With each press of the BBE button the modewill change from the highest effect (BBE 1) tothe least effect (BBE 3). BBE2 will be some-where in-between.

Note: The BBE processor is most effectivewhen used in conjunction with the othersurround effects.

Notes:• The mode currently set is displayed by

pressing the BBE/SUR/EQ button once.Then, the effect is changed by eachsuccessive press (within 5 seconds).

• While this making this adjustment, otheroperations will not be accepted.

• When turning the unit power on for the firsttime after resetting, each mode is set todefault.

Adjusting the EqualizerSettingsYou can modify the Equalizer settings to createa response curve more appealing to yourpersonal taste.

Press the EQ (EQUALIZER) button repeatedlyto select the Equalizer setting preset which youwish to adjust.The example shows FLAT mode.

Memorizing theEqualizer Settings

Press the EQ button to select the desiredequalizer setting (factory preset or your own)you wish to store in memory.

Within 5 seconds after operating step , pressand hold any one of the Preset buttons (1 –6 ) for at least 2 seconds. The indicators blinkfor 5 seconds showing the unit is ready forstoring.

Setting Time

Make sure you are in the Clock mode bypressing the Clock button (see page 54). Then,press and hold the CLK (Clock) button for atleast 3 seconds. The time indication will beginto blink.

To set the time to the nearest hour, press theCT button while the time indication is blinking.For example, if the time shown in the display is9:35, the CT function will change it to 10:00. Ifthe display shows 9:29, the CT function will setthe time to 9:00.

Example: To adjust to 9:35

Press the "H" button to adjust the hours whilethe time indication is blinking.

Press the "M" button to adjust the minutes whilethe time indication is blinking.The time automatically sets after 5 seconds ofinactivity. It can be manually set by pressing theCLK button immediately after making adjust-ments. The time display stops blinking whenset.

Correct HandlingDo not drop the disc while handling. Hold thedisc so you will not leave fingerprints on thesurface. Do not affix tape, paper, or gummedlabels on the disc. Do not write on the disc.

Disc Stabilizer

Disc CleaningFingerprints, dust, or soil on the surface of thedisc could cause the CD player to skip. Forroutine cleaning, wipe the playing surface with aclean, soft cloth from the centre of the disc tothe outer edge. If the surface is heavily soiled,dampen a clean soft cloth in a solution of mildneutral detergent before cleaning the disc.

Disc AccessoriesThere are various accessories available on themarket for protecting the disc surface andimproving sound quality. However, most ofthem will influence the thickness and/ordiameter of the disc. Using such accessoriescan cause the disc to be out of standardspecifications and may create operationalproblems. We recommend not using theseaccessories on discs played in Alpine CDplayers.

• The CD has been damaged.– Eject the CD and discard; using a

damaged CD in your unit can causedamage to the transport.

• Improper mounting.– Securely re-mount the unit.

• Disc is very dirty.– Clean the disc.

• Disc has scratches.– Change the disc.

• Dirty or scratched disc.– Clean the disc: damaged discs should be

replaced.

Tape Mode

• The tape head needs cleaning.– Clean the tape head.

• Incorrect Dolby NR in use.– Check Dolby NR switch setting.

• No disc is loaded.– Select a disc.

• No magazine is loaded.– Insert a magazine.

• Malfunction in the unit.– Press the eject button and remove the

CD from the CD magazine. Inspect theCD for any deformities or irregularities(see pages 6 – 7). If there appears to beno problems with the disc, insert the CDback into the magazine. When the"ERROR" indication disappears from thedisplay, insert the magazine into the unit.If the magazine does not eject, consultyour Alpine dealer.

• Magazine ejection not possible.– Press the magazine eject button. If the

magazine does not eject, consult yourAlpine dealer.

• Magazine ejects without CD.– Press the eject button to activate the
