discover 3D3D GIS for GeosciencesEncom Discover 3D turns your two-dimensional Geographical Informaton System (GIS) into a full 3D system. Discover 3D is fully integrated with the Encom Discover desktop GIS, which is designed especially to meet the needs of geologists, environmental scientists, cartographers, exploration managers, and petroleum engineers.

The Discover GIS system, and its companion Discover 3D module, are fully integrated with MapInfo Professional, and are designed to unlock the real potential of this industry-leading GIS system for geologists and geoscience professionals.

Much More than a 3D VisualiserDiscover 3D allows you to combine, visualise, interrogate, and model your geochemical, lithological, geophysical, hydrological, and geomechanical data in a dynamic 3D environment. Boreholes, soil samples, well logs, photogrammetry, mapping, sections, interpretations, surface models, solids models, and voxel models can all be viewed in the same 3D space. So when creating outlines, surface grids, and solids models in Discover 3D, you can be sure your interpretations are fully informed and precise—in every dimension.

You have spent a lot of time and money collecting the data, so make sure you use the GIS product that can extract the maximum value from your investment. And because Discover 3D is so affordable and easy to use, personnel across your entire organisation can participate in the evaluation process.

A Unified 3D Environment

By bringing all your data together in a unified 3D environment, you are no longer restricted by the functional or data restrictions of other software. This allows you to use these specialist tools for what they are best for, and retain the value of the investment you have already made in these products, without sacrificing the potential value that you can unlock with Discover 3D.

Visualise, Communicate, and Collaborate

By presenting detailed geological information using full-colour 3D mapping techniques, project teams are able to better visualize, communicate, and collaborate on the information available. This allows you to explore and test your theories on complex, spatial relationships between multi-variate data sources.

Inexpensive Data Immersion

Support for dual graphics cards and full-colour 3D stereo projection provides an inexpensive data immersion option. And that means improving the chances of detecting those subtle geometric relationships in the data that are often overlooked using conventional sectional and three-dimensional views.

Combine All Your Data in One ViewIn addition to Discover’s support for a comprehensive range of industry formats, Discover 3D provides direct support for an extensive range of standard and third party data formats encountered in the natural resources industry, including:

Plus import and export of generic ASCII and DXF file formats.

Discover 3D is much more than a 3D visualiser, providing users with a powerful suite of surface and solids modelling tools. And you can use these modelling tools on any object, no matter whether you created the object in Discover 3D or Discover/MapInfo GIS or imported it from an external source.

Surface Gridding and Contouring

Create surface grids from imported point and line data, which you can then use to create cartographic quality contour maps, or intersect and trim other surfaces, or perhaps calculate the cut-and-fill volume with another grid.

Extrude 2D Shapes into 3D Solids

The 3D extrusion tool allows you to quickly transform any 2D outline into a 3D object. This is the perfect tool for extrapolating structural features, or converting site plans into three-dimensional structures, both above and below ground.

Wireframing

After digitising and editing your sectional outlines—snapped precisely in three-dimensions to sampling data—Discover 3D provides you with a powerful set of wireframing or solids modelling tools. Complex shapes, including bifurcations and donuts, can be quickly modelled in a dynamic 3D environment. Surfaces and solids created in Discover 3D or imported from external sources can be combined, intersected, cut, and trimmed with any other surface or grid. For example, you might trim the top of a wireframed orebody model with the current topographic surface grid, or create the intersection surface between a lithological unit and a fault plane.

Voxel Models

Voxel models (also known as 3D grids or block models) can be either imported from other modelling applications, or created in Discover 3D. Choose from nearest neighbour, density, IDW, and kriging gridding methods, and then use the conditioning, filtering, rendering, transformation, and other grid utilities to manipulate, visualise, and analyse models.

Discover 3D has many useful features for displaying and manipulating voxel models:
