KEY BENEFITSExpands Wireless Control over the GrowingEnterprise3Com employs an innovative authentication mechanismbased on user identities, rather than ports or devices toguarantee network mobility and security. Duringauthentication, an authentication server assigns a userprofile to a device. If the user passes authentication, thedevice uses the configuration contents in the user profileto restrict the accessible resources of the user. When thisuser goes offline, the device disables the user profile. Asa result, user profiles are applicable to online usersrather than offline users. This includes users who did notpass authentication.

Information exchanged through access controllers in theWLAN network enables consistent access and securitypolicies across the entire network. In addition, AdvancedEncryption Standard (AES), Temporal Key IntegrityProtocol (TKIP) and Wired Equivalency Protocol (WEP)encryption functions based on a combination of Wi-FiProtected Access (WPA™)/(WPA2™) and 802.1Xauthentication enhance network security.

Centralizes Management of 802.11n APs 3Com Wireless Controllers series can be used to manage802.11a/b/g/n Access Points (APs). In 802.11n mode, the3Com 802.11n-based AP can provide wireless accessrates equivalent to six times the wireless access ratesprovided by a conventional 802.11a/b/g network,expanding coverage and capably deploying wirelessmultimedia applications.

The 3Com WX3000 Series also provides an embeddedportal server to provide security authentication for usersin places where clients cannot be installed.

Provides Advanced Wireless User ManagementUsing MAC-based authentication and access control, auser can configure and modify the rights of user groupson the AAA server, and can configure the rights ofspecific users. Enables Flexible Data Forwarding ModesTo ensure the seamless transmission of data, 3ComWireless Controllers support both centralized anddistributed data forwarding. Combining their mutualadvantages, users can configure local forwarding for datatraffic from clients with a specified service-set identifier(SSID), virtual LAN (VLAN), or SSID+VLAN andcentralized forwarding for data traffic from other clients.This architecture, which effectively separates controltraffic from data traffic, reduces or eliminates potentialaccess controller (AC) processingperformance bottlenecks.

Supports Location-Based User Access Control3Com Wireless Controllers supports AP-based useraccess control, enabling administrators to control thelocation a wireless user can access in the network. Whena wireless user attempts to access the network, theauthentication server forwards a list of APs that the usercan access to the AC, ensuring that the wireless user canaccess only specified and pre-determined APs.

Applies Quality of Service Policies on aPer-User BasisFor networks based on user authorization, a user isauthenticated before accessing a network. Thisauthorization controls the network areas that a user canaccess as well as the network QoS (such as the accessbandwidth and access priority) the user can obtain.

Administrators configuring a group of policies based on auser group or a group of customized polices in the profileof each user allocate a profile in advance to each usergroup or each specific user. When the user has passedauthentication and is online, the port through which theuser accesses the network dynamically forwards theprofile data, complete with the access priority andbandwidth associated with their profile. When the user isoffline, the configuration data of the user is removedfrom this port and the special access rights of the user isdisabled on this port. The QoS profile can carry thefollowing configuration data:

› access control list (ACL) data › QoS data (priority, bandwidth control, 802.1p and

Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) mark) › VLAN data

In a network where users are often on the move, the QoSprofile provides a more modualarized, simpler means offacilitating routine management tasks.

Controlled, Secure Access to Mission-critical DataTo ensure users accessing a network comply with itssecurity policies—minimizing the risk of securitybreaches or network downtime caused by poorlyprotected devices—3Com Wireless Access Controllersprovide an Endpoint Admission Defense (EAD) solution.EAD integrates secure clients, security policy servers,network access devices and existing IT resources, andforcibly applies enterprise security policies to terminalsaccessing the network, controlling network behavior andproactively defending the network from malicious,external attacks.

Exceptional Reliability Ensures Optimum Uptime3Com Wireless Access Controllers support a range ofredundancy options to ensure uptime and availability.

N+N RedundancyWhen N WX3000 Series, WXC5000 Series or the S7900EBlade ACs are deployed in a WLAN, the N+N redundancyfeature enables an AP to choose an optimal AC foraccess. This mechanism implements both ACredundancy and load sharing. Users can configure theAP to select the optimal AC according to the loads orpredefined priorities of the AC. To implement N+Nredundancy, the N-1 ACs must be capable of managingall the deployed APs.

N+1 RedundancyN+1 redundancy is the best solution in terms of reliabilityand economy in which N WX5000 Series or S7900E BladeACs operate independently and another AC operates as astandby AC. When one of the N ACs fails, the standby ACwill replace it. When the active AC recovers, APs willagain associate with it.

1+1 RedundancyThe WX5000 Series or S7900E Blade supports fasthandover-capable 1+1 redundancy and can be deployedin scenarios requiring high reliability. In such adeployment, one AC is the active AC, and the other is thestandby AC. FIT APs establish CAPWAP links with boththe ACs, but only the links to the active AC are active.When the active AC fails, the heart beat mechanismbetween the two ACs ensures that the standby AC cansense the failure within 300 ms and then inform APs touse links to it, thus ensuring service continuity.
