NASP Community Outreach During previous ISPA Conventions a community outreach event was held during the All Association Party to raise money that was donated to a local organization support- ing the youth and their families within that community. During the 2014 ISPA Conven- tion, attendees were asked to join with the NASP Literacy Project and participate in a book drive. In 2015, money was collected and NASP made a donation to a chapter of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Orlando. In 2016, the ISPA Convention supported the Boys and Girls Club of New Orleans. This year, ISPA is joining to raise money to sup- port the Red Cross. Please consider reaching out and contributing to this worthwhile cause via the following link: http://ilispa.memberclicks.net/message2/link/c9015ef1- 9743-4e0d-a7d8-254558d05301/2

Certain educational sessions are financially supported by publishing companies. Authors or publishers ma- terials are likely to be emphasized.

7

Continuing Education Credits Credits are available for all participants. ISPA’s CPDs meet the continuing education guidelines for both NASP and the State of Illinois (ISBE) Type 73 licensure renewal. In addition, we are also approved as an Illinois Division of Professional Regulation CEU provider for Counselors, Social Workers, and Clinical Psycholo- gists. Participants in each workshop will be awarded credits based on the total length of each session. Attendees must attend the entire session to receive CPD credit. Completion of the evaluation form as well as documentation of attendance is required to receive the CPD credit. Note: To receive ISBE credit, each person's IEIN (illinois Ed- ucator Information Number) must be on the attendance sheet of each session. This number can be obtained by logging into the State licensure system (ELIS) at: https:// sec3.isbe.net/IWASNET/login.aspx.

Activities must address & reflect the following continuing professional development purposes: 1. Advance certificate holder’s knowledge and skills consistent with Illinois Standards

for which the certificate is endorsed to keep that certificate holder current. 2. Develop knowledge and skills in areas to be determined by the ISBE for all school

service personnel. 3. Address the knowledge, skills, and goals of the school improvement plan. 4. Addresses the needs of serving students with disabilities, including adapting and

modifying professional practices to meet the needs of students/LRE.

ISPA is a NASP approved provider. Further information can be obtained by contacting the NASP Professional Standards department at 301-657-0270 or [email protected].

For further information – please contact Cathy Stein at [email protected].

If you are a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) all you need to do to comply with ISBE’s continuing education rules is to maintain your NCSP status and pay applicable renewal registration fees. The National School Psychologist Certifica- tion System (NCSP) recommends school psychologists develop a personal plan for the required 75 hours of professional development, thus obtaining credit from a broad range of experience and topics. NCSP’s must obtain 10 of the 75 CPDs required for renewal from NASP– or APA-approved providers during each three-year renewal pe- riod.

Session Descriptions Thursday, Friday, Saturday

THURSDAY FULL DAY PREPaRE Workshop 1:

Crisis Prevention and Preparedness: Comprehensive School Safety Planning (Second Edition)

In this one day workshop participants will learn how to establish and sustain comprehensive school safety and crisis prevention and preparedness efforts. With updated research and strat- egies, this workshop makes a clearer connection between ongoing school safety and crisis preparedness such as improved school climate, student behavior and academic functioning, student resilience, and staff response capabilities. It emphasizes the unique needs and func- tions of school teams and the steps involved in developing these teams, including a model that integrates school personnel and community provider roles. The PREPaRE model builds on existing personnel, resources and programs, and can be adapted to individual school needs and size. Finally, specific attention is given to developing, exercising, and evaluating safety and crisis plans, in addition to emphasizing how to address media, students with special needs cultural considerations, and conducting memorials. This workshop is an excellent course for mental health and educational professionals working at all grade levels to help your school es- tablish a safe school climate and a comprehensive safety and crisis plan. Additional materials fee of $37 per participant is required (includes spiral bound workbook with printed ppt and handouts, plus a CD with all workshop materials and additional supplemental handouts).

THURSDAY AM / PM

Update on Evidence-Based Working Memory Interventions Milt Dehn, EdD, NCSP

Although the majority of working memory investigations find significant improvement on un- trained working memory tasks, the gains do not consistently transfer to academic achievement. To address this concern, the workshop will begin with a balanced review of the research on computerized working memory training and how well it generalizes to academics and to daily functioning. This will be followed by an evaluation of popular computerized training programs and hypotheses that account for their apparent failure. Dr. Dehn will then present evidence- based alternatives to computerized training, including the teaching of working memory strate- gies, hands-on working memory exercises, academic accommodations, and long-term memory strategies that support a weak working memory. Basic practice with the recommended alter- natives will be included in the workshop. Participants will: be aware of the concerns raised by recent meta-analytic reviews of the research on working memory; recognize the characteristics of working memory exercises that may determine how well the training transfers to academics; and identify several evidence-based alternatives to computerized working memory training.

THURSDAY AM

Early Childhood Assessment and Intervention in the Context of Play Lisa Kelly Vance, PhD

This workshop will describe a method of play assessment and intervention that addresses the cognitive and social needs of young children. Participants will learn how the context of play provides an ideal setting for early childhood assessments and interventions; receive training on a play assessment process and learn how it can be used in screening, evaluating intervention needs, and monitoring progress; and learn strategies for implementing interventions in the con- text of play and learn about the effectiveness of these interventions.

12

Session Descriptions Thursday, Friday, Saturday

THURSDAY AM / PM

School Based Interventions for Internalizing Disorders and Other Common Mental Health Issues Mike Vance, PhD

THURSDAY PM

Early Childhood and Mental Health: School Psychologists Impacting the Early Years Lisa Kelly Vance, PhD

The purpose of this workshop is to provide information about addressing mental health in young children. Participants will learn strategies they can implement with preschoolers and their families that prevent problems and reduce existing concerns. Case examples will be pro- vided. Learning Objectives: (1) Participants will learn about common mental health concerns in early childhood, (2) Participants will learn prevention and intervention strategies to promote mentally healthy young children, and (3) Participants will learn how to help families help their children improve mental health factors.

FRIDAY AM / PM

Moving from Intuition-Based to Evidence-Based Interventions: Using "What Works" to Enhance Your Consultation Skills

Robert J. Dixon, PhD, NCSP

To achieve positive educational outcomes, school psychologists can assist and consult with educators to advance “what works” in school, home, and life. By moving beyond, “I think this works,” to leveraging rich educational research history, school psychologists can work with teachers to incorporate best practices and positively impact the educational outcomes in the school environment. Participants will: · Define effect size in relationship to the choice of educational interventions. · Describe specific high impact educational practices at the school, family, and individual

level · Develop consultation approaches using “what works”

FRIDAY AM Neuropsychology of Trauma: Implications for School Psychologists

Elaine Fletcher-Janzen, Ed.D., NCSP, ABPdN

We are hearing more and more about "trauma-informed care" what does this term mean? What do we need to know about the neurophysiology of trauma so that we can create trauma sensitive schools? From a neuropsychological perspective, trauma experienced early in life sets up the brain to develop in ways that may negatively affect learning or adjustment later on. This workshop will define trauma from a neurodevelopmental and biopsychosocial perspective. By understanding how trauma affects the brain and cognitive development, we can gain insight into how to help and teach students who have experienced trauma and engage evidence- based interventions to provide trauma-informed services in the schools.

Session Descriptions Thursday, Friday, Saturday

FRIDAY AM The Evidence for Assessment of Executive Function with the BRIEF2

Peter K. Isquith, PhD (Sponsored by PAR)

Executive functions contribute demonstrably to children’s success in the academic, social, emotional and behavioral domains, and executive dysfunction contributes to a wide range of clinical conditions. In this presentation, we will discuss contributions of rating scale and perfor- mance measures to assessment of executive functions. We will introduce enhancements to the BRIEF2 and focus on a step-by-step approach to interpreting profiles of executive function strengths and weaknesses. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: describe the most widely used “practical skills” model of executive function; explain the pros and cons of performance-based and rating scale measures of executive functions; and discuss an algo- rithm for interpreting and writing findings from the enhanced BRIEF2.

FRIDAY AM / PM

An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing: Applications in Classroom Coaching Jonathan S. Lee, PhD

You wear many hats in your daily interactions with teachers, parents, and adolescents, facili- tating behavior change to support success. One evidence-based practice, Motivational Inter- viewing (MI), can help! Both a clinical practice and conversational style, MI is founded on the belief that how one interacts with a client affects that client’s motivations for change. Join us as we introduce and practice the fundamental skills and spirit of MI in a light-hearted and engag- ing atmosphere focused on its use in classroom coaching!

FRIDAY PM

Therapy Techniques to Help Kids Cope with Parent Divorce and Separation Jeremy Jewell, PhD, LCP, LSP

While many have debated the historic, economic, and sociological factors contributing to the high rates of divorce, few would argue that divorce has a significant impact on the psychological functioning of both parents and their children. Though not without controversy, there is also a substantial literature indicating that divorce is related to poor outcomes on children’s psychological and educational func- tioning as well. This workshop will review research-based individual and group therapy techniques to improve coping in children and teens experiencing parent divorce and separation. Specific techniques embedded in the Kid First and Teen First divorce treatment programs will be highlighted.

FRIDAY PM Creating Resilient & Trauma Sensitive Schools

Pip McGirl, EdD

Early childhood experiences can profoundly impact social, emotional functioning and cognitive development, and undermine learning and school engagement. A safe, supportive school envi- ronment can help counter the effects of negative childhood experiences and promote emotion- al wellbeing and academic success. This workshop will take a fresh look at the policy and practice of resilient, trauma informed schools, demonstrating how educators and clinicians can translate and integrate neuroscience into a whole school approach that extends beyond the social and emotional curriculum. Experiential and group activities will support participants’ learning and offer practical strategies grounded in the principles of nurture and play to meet the needs of vulnerable children at the whole school, classroom and individual level

Session Descriptions Thursday, Friday, Saturday

STUDENT & INTERN SESSION: You’re Hired! Tips to a Successful First Few Years as a School Psychologist

Facilitated by Members of the ISPA Governing Board

This session will begin with some essential strategies to transition from the life of a graduate student to that of an employed school psychologist. Strategies to enter the job market and successfully interview for a position will be reviewed. It will also include a panel of school psy- chologists and supervisors to answer student questions regarding getting and keeping your first job as a school psychologist. Panelists will also discuss what employers are looking for in successful school psychologists, and they will offer strategies to succeed in your few first years of employment.

SATURDAY AM

The Evidence for Executive Function Intervention Peter K. Isquith, PhD (Sponsored by PAR)

Measuring self-regulation in students has become common practice since the introduction of the BRIEF as an efficient and valid means of executive function assessment. More recently, attention has turned to how to support and enhance executive functions, and a body of evi- dence for interventions is quickly developing. In this presentation, we will review approaches to interventions to enhance students’ executive functioning and discuss evidence in support of intervention program. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: articulate an overarching model for executive function intervention; describe approaches to identifying tar- gets for intervention and monitoring progress; and identify one or more specific intervention programs or methods with demonstrated efficacy.

SATURDAY AM

Legal Issues for School Psychologists: 2018 Update Luis A. Rodriguez, Esq.

This presentation will highlight a number of recent court cases and due process hearings in which school psychologists and other district staff found themselves on the witness stand. How they got there and how you can avoid getting there will be the focus of the presentation. This session will help participants: identify and analyze due process concerns in court hear- ings, extrapolate to best practices for the school environment, analyze recent legislation, and apply recent legislation to their role as school psychologists.
