PURPOSE

The FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP was incorporated as a non-profit or­ganization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its ex­hibitions. The purpose is the stimulation of finer standards of the crea­tive effort within the State of Florida.

ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM

Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a members' exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Its educa­tional and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, films and exhibits.

In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.

JURIED SHOWS

To insure an annual exhibition of exceptional quality, the show is juried. The organization always brings in an eminent juror from out-of­state who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or sculptor of national repute. Past locations of Exhibitions have included the Norton Gallery, Ringling Museum, Cummer Gallery of Art, the Jacksonville Art Museum, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Rollins College, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other out­standing galleries.

Closing our 39th year we take pride in the many awards, honors & ach ievements of our members & the stimulating activity reported from some of our area groups, as we look forward to our 40th Anniversary year.

We wish to thank the St. Augustine Art Association & St. Augustine Art Center for hosting our 39th Annual Exhib ition and to the staff, volunteers and Florida Artist members for their cooperation and support.

Special thanks to the award sponsors for their generous support , and to our juror, John Bullard, Director of the New Orleans Museum of Art.

ABOUT THE JUROR

The Florida Artist Group is privileged to have as juror for the 39th Annual Exhibition E. John Bullard, Director of the New Orleans Museum of Art. He was formerly assistant Curator at J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, later served as assistant curator of American Art and then as assistant to the Director of the Na­tional Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In 1973, he became Direc­tor of the New Orleans Museum of Art. He is responsible for bring­ing to New Orleans many major international exhibitions, expan­ding the staff and tripling the size of the Museums' permanent art collection.

Mr. Bullard was born in Los Angeles and received his bachelor and Masters degrees in Art history from the University of California. He has had numerous articles published and has received many honors and awards for his civic activities including an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Loyola University.

JUROR'S STATEMENT

The judging of any art competition is a subjective activity, in which the juror brings his or her years of experience of looking at art and any conscious or unconscious prejudices and or preferences.

In selecting works for this exhibition, I was looking for a con­sistent level of technical skill , a degree of originality in the sub­ject depicted, and an authenticity of feeling. Whether an artist is working in a realistic or abstract style, these realities were apparent to me. Those works selected to receive awards were ones that spoke most forcefully to me in conveying the artists energy and originality. I was Impressed with the high level of professional talent on view in the 39th annual exhibition of the Florida Artist Group.
