Item 395-05 – Montreal, 10d to England via Ireland – 1859, 10d blue Jacques Cartier Sc 10, bright colour, surrounded by mostly large margins, just clear at lower right, tied by Montreal LC double broken circle on folded cover paying 10d Cunard Line letter rate to Sheffield England (b/s, Feb 22). Carried by the Arabia from Boston to Liverpool and surprisingly routed through Dublin with America / Paid / Dublin on front. When the packet boat arrived late and there was no time to process the mails for Dublin in Liverpool, the closed bag with Irish mails was sent to Dublin without processing and the mails were processed in Dublin. In this case the America Paid Dublin h/s was applied to the letter that was mistakenly put in the closed bag. The Dublin GPO was doing the work of the Liverpool Exchange Office. Accompanied by a 2009 Greene Foundation certificate. Lovely! $3,500.00

Endorsed ‘’ came to Mooi River Natal, inside a newspaper by mistake – 24 May 1901’’. Mailed from Natal (the same day) to Edinburgh with official seals and annotations. The Gendron Manufacturing Co. was one of the longest-lived Canadian toy producers making children's carriages, bicycles, wooden toys, carts etc. Fine. $125.00

The letter is addressed to James Stevenson, cashier at Bytown (cashier stands for General Manager of the Bank of Montreal). The Branch was an important centre for the lumber trade and provided local banking facilities for lumber merchants. $50.00

Item 395-38 – Williamstown UC (Glengarry) – 1852, folded letter from Williamstown CW rated 3d to Bell’s Corners Nepean. Lancaster, Prescott, Bytown transit and Bell’s Corners Nepean (the earliest recorded date, Aug 18 1852) b/s. The letter is from Capt Alexander McDowell to William Ross and relates to a lot of land in Nepean. The owner values the land at 100 pounds and considers its value to twice that amount with the fire wood and building timber on it. He asked the writer to examine the land and judge by himself etc. $125.00 SOLD

Item 395-43 – Bath UC (L&A) – 1822, folded letter datelined Bath 8th January 1822 from John Dean regarding payment of monies due. He enclosed 20 pounds in cash and notes and he has no money to pay postage. The letter was rated 2N4 (double 1N2) for 301-400 miles to Montreal. Dean was in the Freemasonry and was the owner of the Dean’s General Store in the village of Bath selling dry goods, groceries, crockery and hardware. The store was located next door to the Forward’s Hotel. Paper lost on front, letter intact. $75.00 SOLD

Item 395-46 – Glasgow Scotland to Toronto – 1858, folded letter from the Garnkirk Coal Company of Glasgow to Gas Consumer’s Co. of Toronto. Rated 7½ Currency with Arnell E-10 handstamp. Carried by Allan Line ‘’Indian’’ through Portland. The letter and account statement (with printed letterhead) relates to freight fee for goods carried by sailings: Algeria, Britannia, St. Lawrence and Zambeze. $275.00

Item 395-47 – To Toronto with 25¢ collect – 1863, stampless cover mailed unpaid from Cheltenham GB to Toronto CW (b/s). The cover was carried by Allan Line Bohemian. Unpaid letters carried by Canadian Packets were due 6d per half ounce plus a 6d fine (once converted 12½ plus 12½ total 25¢ collect). The British Post Office has claimed 4d Sterling (4 in blue crayon) for inland postage and half the fine. Very scarce $250.00

Rated 1/4 and 3/6 collect representing 15 decimes credit to France, 10 decimes GB inland postage – total converted to 2/1 Stg. GB debited Canada an additional 8d Stg total 2/9 Stg and then Canada responsible for collecting the US closed mail transit fee of 2d Stg plus the BNA inland postage total 3/6. An incredible letter. $400.00

Item 395-49 – Cunard Europa return maiden voyage – 1848, folded cover from Toronto to Bromley England (b/s). Paid 1/4 Currency (1/2 Sterling). Carried on the 1st voyage of the Cunard Europa (the maiden return voyage) charged 1d for redirection (b/s). Hard to find! $275.00
