Join us beneath the moss-covered trees of
Alabama’s largest historic district March 15-16 as
we open the doors to extraordinary homes and
buildings for the Historic Selma Pilgrimage.
This year, we’ll feature our town’s impressive
Jewish heritage, including Temple Mishkan
Israel, the Harmony Club and intriguing homes
and businesses of former Jewish merchants.
The story begins in the mid-1800s when
Selma’s first industrialist persuaded hundreds of
German citizens to immigrate to this Alabama
River town. The newcomers became prominent in
business, political and social life, helping build
Selma into the “Queen City of the Black Belt.”
The 2013 tour includes homes with styles that
vary from Italianate to Queen Anne and Gothic
Revival and a former social club turned residence
featured in The New York Times and on HGTV.
New this year is the warehouse studio of
renowned folk artist Charlie “Tin Man” Lucas and
a downtown walking and shopping tour.
Back this year is the Friday evening cemetery
tour where some of Selma’s residents-at-rest tell
how they helped shape America’s history. Then,
enjoy the ambience of the charming 1860 Milhous
-Jones-Childers House at the night reception.
Stop by the Vaughan-Smitherman Museum for
tickets and refreshments, then experience our
Southern hospitality & hands-on history through
guided tours. We look forward to your visit!
