Halloween Candy AppleTreat Boxes

These adorable treat boxes are sturdy and large enough to hold a caramel apple. They can be used for other party favors as well.

Required Supplies:

-12 x 12 inch cardstock for boxes-cardstock and felt scraps for the characters-embellishments such as rhinestones, wire (for whiskers), buttons, embroidery floss-embroidery needle-good paper scissors with a sharp tip-marking pencil-ruler-bone folder-glue; we used Tombow Mono Aqua (great stuff!) for the boxes, and super glue for the handles-plastic or metal bangle bracelets for handles (we got them at a party store)

Step 1 – Cut out the box pieceDownload the templates; I’d recommend printing them on cardstock, if you have it, as it will make a much better template. The box template will print on two pages and will need to be taped/glued together with center lines matching. Cut out template. Trace outline of template onto 12x12 inch cardstock. Cut on all solid lines. Note, there are two solid lines in the interior of the box which need to be cut, too!

Step 2 – Make foldsMark the dotted lines on your box piece. You just need one mark at each end of the line because we are going to be using a ruler. The marks will be on the inside of the box. Place ruler ever so slightly to the left of the line (right of the line if you’re left handed) and use your bone folder to crease it. Repeat this process for all dotted lines. Now, go back and fold over all lines.

Note: If you don’t have a bone folder, you can improvise. I’m a quilter and have a Hera marker which also works great. An old gift card will work, and if you’re gentle, you can use the tip of a scissors, as well.

Step 3 – Glue box togetherYou will start by gluing one of the side wings (the piece that has an angle cut out off of it) onto the bottom of the box (the square in the center). Now glue the second wing on top of that piece. Depending on what type of glue you are using, you may need to weight it down with something like a soup can to let it dry. The Tombow Mono Aqua will dry very quickly.

Once the bottom is dry enough that it will hold on it’s own, it’s time to glue the sides. Simply glue one of the rounded flaps to the top of the other rounded flap. Repeat this on the other side. You now have a box.

Step 5 - Finish your boxTo finish the box, glue a Halloween character to one side. (Detailed instructions on each Halloween character are below.) We glued ours to one of the sides that was glued in making the box. We figured this was a good way to disguise this less attractive part of the box!

You’ll need to glue on your handles. We wanted to make sure they held tight so we used superglue. Lay a plastic bracelet on the inside of the box where you want it to be glued. Trace a line so you know where to put the bracelet when you glue it. Apply glue to line and place bracelet on top of glue. Hold in place until it dries which will be less than a minute. Repeat on the other side.

One last thing! We decided to pinch in the sides so the box had a “paper bag” sort of quality. To do this, push the center of the sides towards the interior, and pinch to top corners together.

Now it’s time to make some caramel apples!

Create your Characters

The templates we’ve provided are for the cat, jack-o-lantern, bat, and ghost boxes pictured at the top. But don’t limit yourself to just those! Make up your own or search the internet for downloadable Halloween images. When you’re ready to print off your templates, make sure to resize them so they are slightly larger than the 3.5 x 3.5 side of the box. Here’s what we did for each character.

CatUsing the cat head template provided, cut one cat head from black felt. Glue cat head on yellow cardstock leaving at least a quarter inch showing around all sides. Cut yellow cardstock to the shape of the cat head leaving 1/8-1/4 of an inch on all sides.

Cut out two eye templates from green felt. Cut two black “melon” shapes to glue onto the felt. Glue eyes in place (you may have to use a thicker glue for this).

The whiskers were made with 28 gauge, gold colored wire. Cut a length of wire about 6 inches long. Use a thick safety pin or needle to poke two holes for each whisker. Working from the back of the image, stick one end of the wire through one hole, and the other end of the wire through the other.

Ghost

Using template, cut out one ghost from white felt. Using a running stitch, embroider mouth. Attached buttons for eyes. Glue the ghost to blue cardstock leaving at least 1/4 inch around each edge. Trim cardstock so 1/8-1/4 is showing around edge of ghost.

BatUsing template, cut out one bat from black felt. Glue the bat to white cardstock leaving at least 1/4 inch around each edge. Trim cardstock so 1/8-1/4 is showing around edge of bat. Attached pink rhinestones for eyes.

Jack-o-LanternUsing templates, cut out one pumpkin from orange cardstock and one stem using green card stock. Make sure to leave extra room at the bottom of the stem for gluing! Glue the stem to the back of the pumpkin. Using templates, cut eyes and and mouth from black felt. Position eyes and mouth on pumpkin and glue in place.
