The Club AssemblyThat Was04 May 2013Dir. David Rees

It was a sunny morning when some of the incoming Boardmembersgatheredatabout11:30forameetingto decide on some vital issues. The main item on the agendaseemedtobewhether theuniformfornextyear should be mandatory long or short sleeves!Eventuallyaftermuchdiscussionitwasdecidedthatmembers could decide for themselves … eminentlysensible!Seriouslythough, themeetingwasinformaland combined with fellowship which is as it should be.

Forarareoccasionthemeetingwascalledtoorderby VP Chris Faelnar and was handed over to Program Coordinator Rtn. Joe Ramos who looked a littlesurprised to be in the spotlight. Very soon however hewasinfullswingandtreatinguswithhisinimitablesenseofhumour!

A nice and straightforward invocation was givenby PP Bert and we asked for blessings and help with carrying out our tasks in Rotary. This was followed by the singing of Pambansang Awit, and a rousing renditionoftheRotaryHymneventhoughthecirclewasalittlesmallerthanusual.

PP Veeh was in charge of entertainment and continued the character searching themeof late byanalysing thecoloursmemberschose for their cars!Notonlywasanalysisdoneforprimarycoloursbutalsofor light and dark shades. I noted that my car (a sort of red / maroon) indicated an aggressive temperament althoughmodifiedby themaroon.Yellowshowedasunnydisposition,Green(light)wastrendyandlively,blue–loyaltytrustetc.,grey–elegant,futuristic,coolandgold indicatedprestige. hardtofind.Itwasn’tadifficulttaskthoughastherewas only one guest this week introduced by Rtn. Bennie.

Sec. Baby took Finest Moments and showed by photographs the work and service done by members. It was nice to be reminded of recent events and Babyhoped thateveryonewouldbefined. I got theimpressionthateveryonewas-somedouble.

As usual the Raffle draw was done by Rtn. Herbwith assistance from Treas. Marilyn. It was a lucky day for Rtn Peter who won 2 prizes of Japanese rice. Other winnersofriceandcondimentsincludedDir.Gigi,Rtns.Pam&Naas,PPBennyandVPChris.

InMember’s time Treas.Marilyn announced thatSec. Baby would receive dues and other payments from members whilst she was away. Dir. Davidreminded the meeting of DG Tony’s generous offerto donate $500 for every Rotarian who also donated $500 to make 1 PHF but time was running out upto 15 May only. In Presidents time VP Chris againannounced the upcoming RC Baguio Golf for a Cause FellowshipcombinedwithDGLindaWinter’s1sttLegGolf tournament tobeheldon17May followedthenextdaybyDISTAS2013.

Rtn. Pam introduced 17 year old RCB Rotary UPBaguio, freshman scholar, Renz Venielle Lamayo as ourGHSfortheday.Although, notsurprisingly, alittlenervous, Renz gave an impassioned account of his poor family’s struggle to provide him with an educationand even though he had a place UP would have been unable to afford to stay in Baguio. His underlyingmessage was that without the help given by RC Baguio he would not have been able to commence the course atUP.Duringquestiontimehewaspressedbyafewmember as to the veracity of his statements but I believe thatwewere left innodoubtas to the truebenefitofourdonations.EICMarcelgavetheresponseand thanks to the GHS and VP Chris presented the tokenandCertificateofAppreciation.

Amazingly the meeting was adjourned shortlyafter 2:15 after the singing of Pilipinas KongMahal.Amostenjoyablemeetingwashadbyall!WelldoneeverybodyandthankyouJoe!

From the moment I was nominated as Rotary Internationalpresident,IknewIwouldchooseathemethat would focus on peace. This is why I planned three peace forums – to give Rotarians an opportunity to think about peace, to talk about peace, and to share their ideas on building peace together. The finalRotary Global Peace Forum takes place this month in Hiroshima, Japan.

Wehearthewordpeaceeveryday.Butmostofusspendlittletimethinkingaboutwhatpeaceis.Onitssimplestlevel,wecandefinepeacebywhatitisnot.Itis a state of no war, no violence, and no fear. It means thatyouarenotindangerofhunger, orpersecution, orthesufferingofpoverty.

Butwecanalsodefinepeacebywhatitis, andbywhat it can be. Peace can mean freedom of thought and of speech, freedom of opinion and of choice, and theabilityforself-determination.Itcanmeansecurity,confidenceinthefuture–alifeandhomeinastablesociety. On a more abstract level, peace can mean a sense of happiness, of inner serenity, of calm.

However we use the word, however we understand peace, Rotary can help us to achieve it. Rotary helps us to meet the basic needs of others – to provide health care, sanitation, food, andeducationwhenandwherethey are most needed. It helps to meet the inner needs as well, for friendship, connection, and caring. AndRotaryhelpsustobuildpeace in itsmosttraditionalsense, by reducing the causes of conflict. It buildsbridges of friendship and tolerance among people and nations.Ithelpsustounderstandoneanother.

Howeverwedefinepeace, whateverpeacemeansto us, we can bring it closer through service. Peace, in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal, and a realistic goal for Rotary. Peace is notsomethingthatcanonlybeachievedthroughtreaties,by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is somethingthatwecanfind, andthatwecanachieve–every day, and in many simple ways.

And so I thank you for your commitment to Peace Through Service – and to a Rotary goal of a more peaceful world.

Every Rotarian, every contribution, and every

projectmakes a difference every year. Through The

Rotary Foundation, we can all do our part to work

toward global peace from the ground up. Has your

There is still time to make your contribution.

There is still time to give a community the chance

to drink clean water, a young girl the opportunity to

will have given something based on his or her own

situation. Itdoesn’t takemuch fromeach individual

when you have the support of more than 1.2 million

members, but that assumes 100 percent support. If

you’ve given, I thank you sincerely. But if you haven’t, I

hope you will as together we make May a great month
