  • 37th Anniversary - 2018 Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph

Welcome to the 37th annual Kiwanis Music Festival of Guelph.

Many thanks to our participants, adjudicators, visitors, donors and sponsors, organizers, volunteers, Board and Committee members, media guests, and venues. We look forward to another wonderful Festival and hope you enjoy this valuable contribution to the cultural life of Guelph and Wellington County.

Please remember that the performers need absolute silence and you must wait to enter or leave the hall until there is a break in the performance. Please turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices. Photos and videos of performances may be taken if the performer has given their permission, but no flash photography and absolutely no recording of the adjudication is permitted. Please remain in your seat and be discreet while recording.

    Junior Strings Adjudicator Catherine Walker

Catherine Walker received a Bachelor of Music degree (performance-cello) from McGill University in Montreal and continued her studies for a year in Lausanne, Switzerland with famed cellist Guy Fallot. Upon her return to Canada in 1975, she started her training in Suzuki pedagogy with Yvonne Tait and has worked with most of the other North American teacher trainers over the years. She had a large private studio in Montreal for close to thirty years and, in 2005, she moved to the Eastern Townships in southern Quebec. She is also an active clinician and has taught at numerous institutes and workshops throughout Canada, the United States, Japan, England and Spain. Catherine has been sanctioned by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) as a cello teacher trainer since 1983 and has taught Apprenticeship and Training courses. Ms. Walker was the founding president of the teachers association, Suzuki Musique Montral (SMM), and served on the SAA cello committee from 1984-1988. In 1988, she went to Matsumoto, Japan and spent six months working with Shinichi Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki method. From 1996 to 1999, she served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and during that time was also the Canadian representative to the International Suzuki Association (ISA). In 2008, Catherine translated the Suzuki philosophy course manual Every Child Can (ECC) into French and she has presented it several times around the province of Quebec. In 2013, she taught at the International Suzuki Method Conference in Matsumoto, and at the International Cello Festival in Barcelona in 2014.

Please join us for the Highlights of the Festival Concert & Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 26 at St. Georges Church at 7 pm.

It will feature some of the finest performances heard during the Festival, as well as the presentation of medals and $13,500 in scholarships.
