    It was little Sara" with her baby brother I%ik strapped to her back.

    (h it was %ery cold but little. But little Sira was wrapped up warm as a winter fire.She made her way slowly through the snow until she came to a good place to fish.

    Little Sira dig a hole in the ice and sank her line and hook. The sun was bright in thesky" and baby I%ik was sleeping.

    But someone was watching. Someone bigand whiteand fearsome.

    Baby I%ik woke up. Big Fuzzy!he laughed at the huge" furry face.

    ,&ere"- he said" ,fishy/-

    The big" white creature was so surprised that he took the fish and gobbled it up.

    Little Sira caught another fish" and another.

    Fishies for Fuzzy!laughed I%ik.

    The big" furry creature gobbled them all up" bones and all.

    The sky grew darker.

    Sira heard the wind howl.

    It whipped up the snow and whistled around her ears.

    She knew it would soon turn into a bli00ard.

    It was time to pack up the fish and go home.

    But when she turned around all the fish were gone" e%ery one*

    She was %ery cross.

    erhaps a seal came by and took them/

    1ow there was nothing for the family to eat.

    2hoooo* 2hoooo* howled the wind. The sky grew darker still. 3ish or no fish" Siraknew they must go at once" while they could still see the way home.

    So Sira and baby I%ik set off into the blustery e%ening. But the wind roared likethunder and blew snow into their faces. Sira couldn+t see the way.

    Little Sira ran as fast as she could" but the snow was thick and she was tired. I%ik felthea%y" like a big sack of potatoes tied to her back.

    Soon she found herself by an icy ca%e. ,2e can hide in here"- she said. They wereso tired that they fell asleep straight away.

    They didn+t hear the big footsteps thundering through the snow. (ne" two" three. . .

    Slowly" slowly" the big creature crept inside. &e opened up his huge" strong arms"and . . .

    . . . %ery carefully picked up Sira and I%ik and folded them into his warm chest.

    Then he ran and ran as fast as he could" o%er the snowy hills and through theblustery bli00ard" all the way back to the igloo.

    Little Sira and baby I%ik woke up in their doorway.

    Sira couldn+t belie%e her eyes. &ow did they get home/

    And where did that big fish come from/

    (nly baby I%ik guessed the answer. Big Fuzzy$he said happily.

    5ead the story to the children. Build upthe suspense and the e7citement of whatwill happen ne7t. En8oy the rhythm of thewords and the repetition of the phrase9someone big and white and fearsome+.2ere the children right when theyguessed what was happening/ !iscusshow else the story could ha%e ended.

    Encourage the children to take it in turnsto try to read the story aloud. &elp themwith any difficult words and remember topraise the children for their efforts inreading the book.

    Study a map of )reenland with thechildren and choose a place where Siraand I%ik might li%e. Talk about )reenlandand what life in such cold and snowycountry would be like. &ere are somepoints to discuss: )reenland is thelargest island in the world. (%er ; fallingsnow" panik>daughter" a??alu>girl+syounger brother" nano? ?a?orto? > polarbear" siku>ice" e?aluk>fish" puisi>seal.@ake labels of the words and encouragechildren to try to say them.

    Ask the children to imagine what it wouldha%e been like to li%e with Sira and I%ikwith no electricity" central heating orcars*

    &elp the children to make a collage of asnowy landscape. (nce the landscape iscomplete" the children can makeindi%idual drawings or paintings of theigloo and some of the animals that mightbe seen in )reenland. 3or e7ample a

    polar bear" reindeer" seal and wolf. Thedrawings can then be stuck onto thecollage and labelled with the names ofthe animals to encourage wordrecognition.

    Sira and I%ik wore lots of clothes to keepthemsel%es warm. These were made ofanimal skin and fur. Ask the children tothink about what they would wear if theywere %isiting Sira and I%ik. They candraw pictures of themsel%es wrapped up

    in their warm clothes.
