The Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) is amethod for collecting information on the clinical qualityof care as reported by the patients themselves. Thesequestionnaires are provided to patients pre-operativelybefore undergoing hip replacements, knee replacements,groin hernia surgery and varicose vein surgery. Theinformation collected empowers the patients to choose ahospital that achieves the best results for the operationthey need.

The Ophthalmology Out-Patient Department is one of thebusiest in the Trust and it regularly sees over 1,500 out-patients a week. These patients face unique difficultiesnavigating their way around as due to the nature of theirconditions most have reduced vision. Many are alsoelderly and have other health problems. The departmentis currently having a refurbishment which means that themain patient corridor will be out of use until early 2010.The overall rebuild is scheduled to finish in early 2011.

30. Aqua Natal

Mother and Baby Support

Aqua Natal is an exercise session which runs every Fridaythroughout the year 1.15 - 2pm at Kind Edward VIIswimming pool on Clarkehouse Road.

It is available to pregnant women as well as to womenwho have had babies recently. Women are able to exercisein the pool whilst their babies are cared for by thevolunteers and a midwife. Between 12-20 babies attendAqua natal each week.

The role includes:• Keeping an eye on the babies with minimal interruption• Picking up a baby if crying a lot and cannot settle• Cleaning hands after holding each baby• Being aware of Health and Safety eg always sit down when holding a baby

31. Antenatal Clinic

Support Volunteer

Antenatal Clinic provides care for mums-to-be throughouttheir pregnancy. The clinic is based in the Jessop Wing andis open Monday to Friday 8am until 6pm. The departmentprovides a number of speciality clinics as well as those forroutine care.

Personal Characteristics/Personal Specification• Mature attitude• Excellent communication skills• Ability to mix with a range of people• Interpersonal skills, to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team• Ability to organise their workload (under supervision)• Good timekeeping skills• Clear understanding of confidentiality

The role includes:• Shadow staff• Meet and greet patients and relatives• Show patients to consultation rooms from the waiting area• Talk to patients and add names to boards• Assist with making up treatment couches• Assist with administration duties• Assist with small errands eg collect sealed notes, collect x-rays as required plus other duties

The Jessop Wing in Sheffield provides Obstetric andGynaecological care for women. All visitors enter thehospital via the main entrance and for many theVolunteer Welcomers will be the first point of contact.The purpose of having volunteers is to provide aprofessional service to patients, visitors and staff, therebycontributing to the development of a patient led service.

34. Headways

Support Volunteer

Headways are a one to one advice service available topatients who are experiencing hair loss due toChemotherapy. Headways provide advice and informationon the types of headwear available and where to buythem. They also provide practical demonstrations on tyingscarves etc. The service is delivered in the Day Case Centreat Weston Park Hospital.

Personal Characteristics/Personal Specification• Pleasant, tactful and caring manner• Excellent communication skills• Presentable appearance• Friendly and approachable• Clear understanding of patient confidentiality is essential

The role includes:• Receive patients, relative and carers in a pleasant, tactful and understanding manner• Offer advice and practical information about the types of headwear available and where to buy them• Show patients examples of hats, scarves and headwear• Give demonstrations on scarf tying etc• Ensure stocks of scarves and headwear are maintained• Maintain stocks of information leaflets

35. Radiotherapy

Welcomer

Radiotherapy is the treatment of people with cancer usingionising radiation (x-rays). Most of the patients are outpatients and the majority are able to care for themselvesand quite independent. We have about 300 patients perday that will attend the department for treatment andmost attend each day. It is a large department occupyinga significant proportion of the lower ground floor.
