From the editor Hello everyone, Did you miss me last month? It wasn’t because I was not around, but I just did not have the space to put in my two-penny worth. May I just remind you that this is a double issue which covers ````` July and August (I am having a rest) so please keep your copy safe for reference until the next issue is out at the beginning of September. I have mentioned before that we have a new Treasurer, but in fact we have a husband and wife team from Ringwould. We are very grateful to Martin and Helen Rodney-Smith for taking on the task. Our thanks go to them for kindly offering their services. Their contact details are on page 15 in this edition and I am sure they are ready and waiting to hear from anyone who feels they would like to contribute a donation towards the cost of printing the magazine. Another thank you, this time to the organisers of the Garage Safari in Kingsdown who so kindly donated £150 to Rural Roundup from their profits. With the summer holiday looming, let us hope the weather perks up a bit so that everyone can enjoy some lovely sunshine to prepare for the long winter days ahead. All the best, see you again in September. Doreen Clark

So as you head for the summer beach, how spiritually fit are you? It is estimated that around 100,000 people join gyms every January and it’s not hard to think why after turkey, Christmas pud and chocolate have done their worst. It also testifies to the emphasis we place on physical health and fitness in our culture.

The physical industry has it well worked out. We all have in our minds an image of the perfect body, whether male or female, and in our heart of hearts, most of us, I am sure, would like bodies like the ones the models have on TV. Then there is fitness: fit people can do what unfit people can’t. They can run upstairs, play tennis, and endure physical pain. Unfit people often have their options strictly limited. Gyms are communities dedicated to helping people acquire physical health and fitness. You go to a gym to learn a set of exercises that will help you develop a more attractive, healthier, fitter body. There is of course, a cost involved. It costs money, time and effort. Yet people do it. 800,000 people a year join gyms, if we believe the statistics. Of course, many don’t actually go (apparently Britons waste £37m per year on unused gym memberships and slimming classes!) but we still believe the narrative. Gyms offer a clear picture of what you can change into and provide the means to get there. Gyms offer the prospect of change of personal transformation, of the opportunity to do what before you could not do, of life enhancement. And people will pay the price, financial, physical and mental to get such transformation. Churches are the equivalent of gyms for the health and fitness of our spiritual welfare. The early church often used athletic metaphors for the spiritual life. 1 Tim 4 speaks about “training yourself in godliness”, 1 Cor 9: 24-27 compares Christians to athletes who “go into strict training” and the early Christian monks were often referred to as spiritual gymnasts, with their feats of fasting and endurance. In other words the early churches saw themselves as gyms do today – communities focused on enabling personal transformation, only this time spiritual, rather than physical. Just as a physically fit person can do things a physically unfit person can’t, the same is true spiritually: spiritually fit people can forgive when they are wronged, give when they are relatively poor, keep their temper when provoked and keep their promises to their wives or hus-bands even when sorely tempted not to. In Jesus Christ, we have seen an image of the perfect soul. This role model may not be featured in OK magazine or appear on the catwalk, but he does walk with us each and every day. You don’t have to be a Christian to realise that life tends to work better if you and those around you strive towards acquiring the qualities we see in Christ – those of patience, kindness, generosity, love, humility and forgiveness. Just imagine what life would be like if we practiced these “spiritual exercises” every day and if these became the habitual reactions to adversity and life in general? Happy holidays, Yours in Christ,

Cathy

July is always a busy month in the school year. At the beginning of July Class 6 children will be visiting their secondary schools for a taste of what it will be like in September. There are many sporting fixtures across the term, including Sports Day, swimming gala and the Deal Athletics Summer Cup – for which we are the current holders! Trips take place at this time of year, classes will be visiting Dymchurch, on the light railway, Howletts and, of

course, the annual Isle of Wight residential. Class 5 will be experiencing what life would have been like as a child during World War 2. Including a day where they dress up in 1940’s costume. Environmental Art Week will take place in July, and this has been planned collaboratively with Temple Ewell CEP School. The children will be working outside with an environmental artist and drawing inspiration from the local area and Kearsney Abbey. Jo Hygate

The June meeting of Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council was rather animated and numerous things occurred! The Parish Council agreed to give a grant of £5000 to St John’s Church for much needed repair. A grant of £50 to the Deal and Dover Citizens Advice Bureau to help them continue to provide much needed support to local residents. Ringwould villagers wish to hold a Summer BBQ and Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council will sponsor the event and have donated £100 to help give the villagers a lovely day! Funds set aside for the maintenance of the Churchyard at St Nicholas Church have been released to keep the churchyard looking pleasant. A quote was accepted for a contractor to undertake the maintenance of the footpaths around the parish so that they are accessible for those wishing to use them, work should begin shortly. PCSO Skirrow informed the Parish Council that numerous cars in Kingsdown have been broken into. The Parish Council wish to advise residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuable items from them. Dover District Council asked the Parish Council to fund the public toilets in Kingsdown, which the Parish Council are pleased to do each year. However it has been noted that an act of mindless vandalism continues to take place; the toilet rolls are being taken and are being placed into the cistern, which is causing problems for the contractor who maintains them. The Parish Council would like to ask the person responsible to stop doing this thoughtless act, as if the damage continues to occur then the cost of maintaining the toilets will increase, which could lead to the much needed amenity having to close. The next meeting of the Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council takes place on Monday July 8th 2013 at The Learning Opportunities Centre at 7.30pm. Katie Amaouche

Those of you who are interested enough to be keeping an eye on the progress of Kingsdown Village Hall will have probably noticed that some smart, new, Low Energy security lighting has been installed in the forecourt. This has certainly improved safety when leaving the hall in the dark also it is much more efficient and environmentally friendly. The next stage of this project will be to erect a new Community Notice Board on the wall at the road entrance and remove the old tatty one. All this has been possible thanks to a £2,500 from the Kent County Council Membership Grant. The next noticeable change will be the decoration of the Main Hall, Lobby and Kitchen. This will make a tremendous difference, something everyone has been waiting for and will be done during the Summer break. There is quite a lot of work still to be done, new lights in the main hall. The floor needs attention and eventually we will need new windows. Unfortunately this will have to wait until we have the money to carry out the work. In the mean time we are actively seeking grant funding. Let us hope it will not be too long before we achieve our goal. Doreen Clark (Treasurer)

SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday of each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road.

Our membership has grown so much that there weren't enough cups to go round for tea at the June meeting! (We managed!) There was rapt attention for John Pearce's talk on Murder comes Gift Wrapped, about a murder committed in Ightham on May 21st 1984 ( We had to remember the date, we were threatened with questions at the end!) when John was the police officer in charge of the case. It was a high profile case with a somewhat unsatisfactory ending, but we were kept involved as we were shown slides of evidence, and were asked for our opinion. Very exciting! 34 delegates from East Kent attended the AGM of the National Federation of WI in Cardiff, where they were amongst 4000 members from all over Britain. We are looking forward to our outing to Scotney in July. A member highly recommended our weekly walking group which meets on Thursdays, it blows the cobwebs away and gives an opportunity to meet other members for a walk alongside chat. We acknowledged the Coronation Jubilee by having a rather luscious cake with our tea, and by giving three cheers for Her Majesty!

Our next meeting is on Monday 8th July in Kingsdown Village Hall at 2pm. Do come! Christine Smith

Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in July/August July:- 11th Elizabeth Shepherd, 13th Pat Rowe, 16th Susan Martin,

20th Sue Parker-White, 27th Lisa Souter & Gillian Weston, 29th, Beryl Chidwick.

August:- 4th Jean Taylor & Hazel Williams, 6th Elizabeth Bembridge, 25th Jenny Todhunter.

Well! Everything is at least six weeks behind in the garden thanks to the not so wonderful weather this part of the country has been in receipt of as I write. Even the weeds are struggling to grow! But that puts us all in the same boat and the Society's

Committee has asked me to say something about the Annual Show on Sunday 1st September. A great deal of time and preparations by volunteers goes into putting this long running show on for you all to take part in. The Society was instigated nearly seventy years ago by Lady Ward with many of the silver cups being donated by her friends and two are in her name. The show is an open show so all of you who read the Rural Roundup can take part and we would love to see you here in Kingsdown. One gentleman who has a holiday home in the village turned up last year with the biggest marrow we had ever seen! Two young men did very well in the Home Produce section beating one of the fathers. So please come and exhibit in one or more of the many classes. Schedules are on sale in the Village Post Office or con-

tact me. We look forward to seeing you on the day and that it is warm and sunny! Take care in the garden during the next two months whilst you potter around.

Susan Martin - Chairman

Tea and Chat in Ripple…Tea and Chat met on June 10th in Ripple Village Hall. After the tea drinking and chatting, the afternoon ended with a Quiz, which produced the usual signs of dissent from the participants when their answers did not coincide with those of the Quiz setter. It was a fortunate coincidence that our PCSO, Katie Parker-Brown, was making her regular visit to Tea and Chat, just in time to take in hand the traffic chaos around the road resurfacing work at the crossroads outside the Village Hall A cup of tea well earned! Tea and Chat will meet next on July 8 th at 2.00pm in Ripple Village Hall.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Ripple...The Spring Bazaar held in the Village Hall raised £444.62 for church funds. A very warm ‘thank you’ to all those who helped at and attended the event.

Ripple Village Hall…A reminder that following the retirement of the Bookings Offi-cer, a new system of booking the Hall has been introduced. Hall bookings can be made with, and the keys collected from, Mrs. Patricia Scott Bradford on telephone number 07967 307 440. This is a Ripple Village Hall dedicated number. For people living in Ripple, the keys can be collected from Mrs. Angela Turner. We are very grateful to these two ladies for enabling Hall bookings to continue in an orderly fashion. and to Denise Eaves for the many years that she looked after the Hall book-ings. The Committee continues to look for new opportunities to develop the Hall as a centre for village activities and for new members to join the Committee to bring new blood and ideas into the management of the Hall. The Hall has available for disposal an Orla RX620 Organ. Anybody interested should contact Laurence Davey on 374 512.

Bingo Club...The Bingo Club July meetings will be in Ripple Village Hall on July 9 th and July 23rd. There will be no meetings in August, the next meeting being on September 3rd .

Ripple Parish Council…At the meeting held on June 13th, Mr, Roger Pannell was co-opted onto the Parish Council, thus bringing the number of councillors back to five. A request has been received by the Parish Clerk from a Mrs. Parkinson concerning pupils at Ripple Primary School during 1957-1958. Mrs. Parkinson would like to know if anybody has any school photographs from that period. She can be contacted on 01843 822 484. The Parish Clerk also has her address.

Deal Area Emergency Foodbank

Deal Area Emergency Food Bank has been operating for six months and it has been a steep learning curve for everyone involved. With the added demand being seen the 70 odd volunteers we have at present are certainly needed. One of our dreams, which hopefully will become a reality before too long is to have our own van that will cope with the large volumes of food that have to be delivered to the centres each week from the Warehouse. At the moment we are relying on cars which have a much smaller capacity and therefore need to make several journeys that could be done in one trip with a van. We have a “Van Fund” which is growing and I am sure we could buy half a van by now but the rest is taking its time! Has anybody got any ideas? If so please do get in touch. Another fantastic opportunity for Deal Food Bank and one we desperately need is to build up our stocks in the Warehouse. We have been invited to collect again from Tesco at Whitfield and Broadstairs on the 5th and 6th of July. We have over 20 food donation bins around the area and they are sited at::-

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING.

Pat Crawford provides

the HADLOW COLLEGE COMMENT AND ADVICE COLUMN

Arguments abound concerning the use of genetic modification (GM) in food production. Public response - 'for' and 'against' - is not always based on scientific evidence and no doubt the debate will continue for a very long time.

Interestingly, according to a report in The Economist, GM could reverse the serious decline in the number of chestnut trees in America. Going back quite a few years, it is reckoned there were about 4 billion chestnuts in the States but, by the 1950s, they had been wiped out in most parts of America as a result of a fungus.

A trial lasting three years is to be undertaken involving 800 GM trees. Genes from other species of trees - and wheat - are involved in the trial. The article points out that commercially related GM applications relating to trees have been opposed by environmentalists. This experiment is not 'commercial' having reference to attempts to restore a native tree.

The London School of Economics has joined in the GM debate producing a report entitled Feeding the Planet in a Warming World. The report includes some pretty stark forecasts: over the next fifty years farmers and growers will be required to produce more food than was produced in the last 10,000 years in total!

The LSE suggests that existing agricultural practices will be unable to fulfil this vastly increased demand. Of course, research bodies throughout the world – includ-ing our own highly respected East Malling Research - are undertaking numerous trials relating to conventional plant breeding but the LSE suggests this will be insufficient. The report points out that new plant breeding techniques must result in crop varieties that deliver greater yields, withstand pests and disease, use less water and withstand heat…cold…wind…drought…heavy rainfall! (One of the most critical aspects of climate change relates to Extreme Weather Events. With little or no warning to allow for mitigation, devastating events are increasing in all parts of the world – and agriculture and horticulture often bear the brunt.)

The LSE calls for a change in Government policies to allow for GM: 'There is no agricultural policy change that could be adopted with more positive impacts and downsides than drastically reducing regulations applied to crops improved through biotechnology….'

' Humans and livestock have consumed billions upon billions of meals derived wholly or in part from these improved agricultural varieties for nearly two decades which have sustained a strong record of safety for humans and the environment. Yet these innovative products, which are developed and brought to market with precise, predictable and safe techniques, are subjected to regulatory obstacles that dwarf those faced by older products and obsolete technologies, some with genuinely problematic legacies.'

'Food for thought' is a very applicable phrase!

Kingsdown Rocks Judging by the ‘thank you’ letters and emails received by the organisers Sue Slade, Steve and Jenny McCormick and Mike Glavin ……”brilliant!..... same again next year please”…..the Kingsdown

Musical Festival held at Kingsdown & Ringwould C of E. Primary School field on Saturday 8th June was a huge hit. Despite the cold wind, which kept some people away, a healthy audience – sometimes approaching 400 enjoyed a fantastic village occasion. The afternoon was very much a village occasion with displays by local societies and groups including WI, Garden, Historical and Conservation, Save the Children, Lifeboats, Badminton Club, Kingsdown Cat Sancturary, The St Nicholas Players and Brownies. The event kicked off with a Pre-School Nursery Rhyme Fancy Dress competition, followed by stage performances by the Brownies, The Blues Brothers (aka Kingsdown Cubs!) and Madeline’s Melodies Youth Choir. The afternoon audience was treated to top quality live jazz from the young and talented “Jazz Funcification”. The evening entertainment cranked up the tempo with fabulous performances by the Fab Four Electric Beatles, soloists:- Darren (Elvis) Price, Jack Wilby (watch out for this boy!), Kingsdown’s favourite ‘One Love” and Kingsdown’s own Sarah Banks - who also did a terrific job as Festival Compére for 11 hours!! The Rock Festival was finished off with a truly magnificent performance by “Gentlemen of Few” (move over Mumford and Son) and closed with a great session by “Coco Band”. Include all the above with the added attractions of the Scouts B-B-Q, Candy floss and Candy stalls, the Zetland Pub Tent, Balloon man and jugglers, Face- painting and Indians with Shetland ponies – (yes you read it correctly!) and you’ll know why Kingsdown Rocked. Benefit Changes

A number of Welfare Benefit changes took effect from April 2013. The changes affect Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and the replacing of the crisis loan and the community care grant. A benefit cap will also be introduced in July 2013. The Citizens Advice in Dover, Deal and Sandwich have seen a growing number of clients seeking advice and assistance regarding the changes. On 1st April 2013, Housing Benefit was reduced for council or housing association tenants who are under occupying the flat or house that they are living in. If a tenant has one spare bedroom the Housing Benefit has been reduced by 14%. For a tenant with two spare bedrooms, there is a reduction of 25%. Some people will be exempt from the changes. Council Tax Benefit has been replaced by a Council Tax Support, which allows local councils to decide what assistance should be given to people on benefits or in receipt of a limited income who are liable to pay Council Tax. In Dover and Deal District, the council has introduced the Council Tax Support whereby people who used to get full Council Tax Benefit will now have to pay 6% of the council tax bill. Starting on the 15th July 2013, there will also be a limit on the amount of benefit a person of working age can claim. The cap is £500 a week for a couple with or without children, £500 a week for a lone parent with dependent children and £350 a week for a single person without children. If anyone needs more information or assistance regarding the benefit changes or debt advice, they can contact the Dover and Deal Citizens Advice. This can be done by phoning the Advice Line on 08448 487 978 or going to the Citizens Advice in Dover, Deal or Sandwich.

Are you content to let Dover District Council impose future (as yet unknown) developments on our village?

If you care about the future of Kingsdown and wish to see a more caring and cohesive community, please support our drive to develop a Neighbourhood Plan. The information boards about such a Plan have been on display in the village hall, at the music festival, and in the church. Many thanks to those who have already volunteered and expressed their interest. However, in order to form a truly representative steering group we really need some volunteers from a younger age group (i.e. under 50!) and men! There will be opportunities to read the information boards between now and the autumn, when we hope to start the process. In the meantime, for further information or to add your name as a volunteer, please contact Helen or Ron via [email protected] or call 366 628 Mary Lord
