DESCRIPTION

Kafeel is an Orphanage that has a Modern Islamic identity. This orphange is designed to accommodate both males and females. Therefore because of these two significant facts, Kafeel’s design is based on three main aspects: privacy, social interaction and Islamic ambience. According to my research to maintain these aspects Kafeel had to consist of two separate yet attached buildings. Just like early Islamic architecture, where most residential buildings consisted of two separate buildings, “Haramlek” was the women’s building and “Salmlek” was the men’s. Just like Kafeel’s deign these two buildings are connected through the central court, so privacy is achieved. In the mean time the court is a space that will allow more social interaction not only between the children, but also with the outer community, as it could be used as a space for events. The two buildings in Kafeel do not just provide physical privacy but also mental security, and they achieve this ideal sense of enclosure.
