Welcome

Dear Friends,

Tackling the areas of greatest need is a mark of a truly great healthcare system. Our goal at UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital is to be a great partner in your healthcare journey, and we couldn’t do it without you, our donors who work with the Finley Health Foundation to provide gifts in support of these goals.

Your giving helps provide outstanding patient care, supports the latest in technology to deliver a high level of care and assists in meeting patients where they are, with convenient access to providers through clinics, urgent cares and the hospital.

In the 2018 Impact Report we are pleased to share stories of people like you, who are providing Finley with the ability to bring care to more children, support the cancer care experience and provide for the future of Finley to ensure that tomorrow’s area of greatest need is met.

We thank you and all of our donors for your commitment to our community’s health and hospital that allows us to do so much for so many. We appreciate your support and friendship as we move forward to advance health care for our community.

Chad Wolbers UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, President & CEO

Scott Harris UnityPoint Health – Finley Health Foundation, Board Chair

Barbara J. Potts UnityPoint Health – Finley Health Foundation, Executive Director

For Mike Kelly, Manager of Radiation Oncology, living the mission means “giving back to Finley Hospital, a place that has been a part of my life for my entire career; more than 33 years. I hold Finley Hospital near and dear to my heart. The hospital is part of my life, my kids’ lives, and the people here are my family. I give back because it feels natural; it’s the right thing to do.”

Others like Sherry Weiner, Materials Clerk in the Materials Management department, living the mission means “caring for people, not only the patients, but also the staff at Finley Hospital. Living the Mission is giving to something I believe in and seeing changes for the good. I give because I believe in Finley Hospital; I believe in the mission and our goals. ”

For Kathy Hickson, Business Manager of Perioperative Services and Sterile Processing, living the mission has a personal meaning “to do the best I can and to provide the best care possible even though it’s not through direct bedside care. What we do in sterile processing matters. By doing my part and by making a gift to the Foundation I am investing in the future of Finley. I give back because of what has been provided to me and my family.

My family and parents received wonderful care here – giving what I have makes me appreciate what I’ve been given.”

Team members have a variety of ways to give back to Finley; through the iCare Annual Employee Giving Campaign, capital campaigns, nursing scholarships or including a planned gift in their will or estate.

The generosity shown by the team members of Finley Hospital to the Finley Health Foundation is truly inspirational. Finley Hospital was founded on the philanthropic groundwork provided by Dr. and Mrs. John Finley who donated their family home to start a hospital. That same philanthropy continues today as team members

support the programs and equipment necessary to fulfill the mission of Finley

Hospital, to improve the health of the people and the communities of the

Tri-State area.

A Welcome Ray of SunshineAs a welcome ray of sunshine brings brightness into the world, so do the women of the Sunshine Circle at Finley Hospital. Since 1889, one year prior to the establishment of Finley Hospital, the all-female volunteer service organization has brought joy and light to patients, visitors and staff.

At its core, the Sunshine Circle provided the foundation under which Finley Hospital would grow and flourish, focusing on the medical needs of women and children of the community. Throughout their storied history, the women of the Sunshine Circle would prove to be trail blazers by providing a place where mothers could receive education through prenatal classes, children could receive care at free children’s clinics, and parents could visit their children in the Sunshine Room in Finley’s Pediatric Department. Giving of their time and talents, the women of Sunshine were always first in line to volunteer for duty each day during the World War II nursing shortage.

For more than 130 years of continuous service, the Sunshine Circle continues to manage, promote and staff the Sunshine Gift Shop at Finley Hospital. Through their gift shop efforts and various additional fundraising projects their support has spread to all areas within Finley Hospital. Today, you would be hard-pressed to find an area of Finley that the Sunshine Circle has not touched. Areas such as the Wendt Regional Cancer Center, Kehl Diabetes Center, Grandview Expansion Project, Family Birthing Suites, programming, equipment, patient assistance and the Sunshine Education and Simulation Labs. In 2018, the organization announced a single record breaking gift in the amount of $200,000 in support of the Pediatric Rehabilitation Expansion Project. Last year the 51 members-strong service organization logged more than 10,500 volunteer hours. Since 1960 (with the establishment of record keeping) the philanthropy of Sunshine has grown to a total of $1.5 million.

“The members of Sunshine Circle are very proud of the monetary support we provide for UnityPoint Health- Finley Hospital,” stated Fran Hedeman, Co-President of the Sunshine Circle. “We are equally proud of the relationships we have established with staff, patients, and visitors. When we are able to offer a helping hand, a listening ear, or a cheerful smile our mission is complete and that is priceless.”

Always the first on-site and true to their founding motto, “Lend a Hand,” the women of the Sunshine Circle will forever be recognized in the history of Finley Hospital as a catalyst for support, growth and perhaps more importantly, as a ray of sunshine to all who enter through our doors.

On the Move! 2019 will mark a new chapter for the Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association (VNA).

For the past 36 years, the VNA has provided services from their location in the 1400 block of Iowa Street. While the current facility has served the needs of the organization, it is now time to look toward the future of the growing public healthcare needs of our community while maintaining a visible presence in downtown Dubuque.

Working with community partners to identify trends in healthcare gaps within the community, the need for a new facility to accommodate growing services was identified. The VNA is excited to announce plans to relocate to 660 Iowa Street in July. The new facility will provide clients with handicap accessibility, dedicated parking, and increased clinical and meeting space.

From the establishment of the VNA in 1910, the organization has worked with leaders in local government, education, social, and human services to provide direct service when appropriate, assist with care coordination, and to build community infrastructure to accommodate long-range healthcare needs. The VNA provides public health services that eliminate barriers and increases access to client’s overall health. While the VNA focuses primarily on the low income and health compromised population, the VNA serves as a referral source to anyone in need. Whether a person needs health, social, environmental, or financial assistance, the VNA is vital to keeping Dubuque’s most vulnerable residents healthy and safe.

It Takes a VillageWe have all heard the African proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child.” At its core we could interpret this to mean it takes an entire community to be present to interact with a child so they may grow in a safe and healthy environment.

The reality is “it takes a village” to achieve any meaningful change in the world. This is very true and is seen daily in the world of philanthropy, where one gift has the capacity to inspire participation at a broader level and create a cascading effect that fosters an environment of giving.

The Wendt Regional Cancer Center saw the effect of a village coming together to support a range of needs for patients experiencing a cancer diagnosis. Organizations like Wahlert Catholic High School Girls Basketball Team and Clarke University Association of Nursing Students to the Dubuque Professional Firefighters Local 25 and the Pink Ribbon Open. In 2018, twelve organizations from across the community provided more than $20,000 through fundraising efforts that supported equipment purchases and patient assistance.

The support of a village allows the community members to receive support that assists them throughout their cancer care journey.

Small Packages Some of the best things come in small packages. Such was the case when the Finley Health Foundation held its 2018 Miracles on the Mississippi Gala. The event was held to celebrate and kick off the fundraising campaign for the Pediatric Rehabilitation program, and it was a night to remember.

Addison Ryan, a youngster served by the Pediatric Rehab program, felt called to make an impact months before the big night. With the guidance and support of her family, Addison held bake sales and went door-to-door in her neighborhood collecting funds to support her speech, physical and occupational therapists.

When asked what inspired her to make a gift to support the Pediatric Rehab team, she replied, “The peds team are the ones who helped me walk, ride a bike, hold a pencil, and how to keep myself safe. They are like family and I love them so much. They need more space since therapy is done around the big people.” By big people, Addison means the adult rehabilitation patients who currently share the space at the Westmark clinic.

Every child deserves to play, and often a diagnosis early in life can require one or several types of therapy to help a child overcome challenges. The pediatric rehabilitation team works every day to see children achieve their goals, such as

Addison’s dreams of participating in track, yoga, swimming and riding a bike.

With the help of her therapists, now Addison does everything her siblings and classmates can do. And in addition to growing her physical abilities, she’s also grown into a philanthropist.

Addison’s mother, Sarah, shared the family’s philosophy saying, “We have a strong belief that giving back to the community, whether it is through fundraising, volunteering, or advocating, fulfills our mission to ‘be the good’. As a family we have experienced grief and hardship, but there is so much that we are thankful for, and want to carry forward our blessings to others… After our experience with prematurity and infant loss (Addison and her twin brother, Elliott, were born 10 weeks early, Elliott passed at 16 days old) organizations related to our experiences have been a big focus.”

As Addison began to turn the big check around to show the audience, gala guests were surprised to learn that she had raised an amazing $8,100 to support the work of the Pediatric Rehabilitation team - $100 for each day she spent in the NICU after she was born.

Addison said, “Volunteering as a family and in general is very fulfilling... while you are giving of your time and efforts to others, you receive so much back yourself - joy, gratitude, and appreciation.”

2018 Gala Wrap –Up The 2018 Miracles on the Mississippi Gala was a tremendous success because of your generosity!

With your help, we netted an amazing $121,000 to support Pediatric Rehabilitation Services at Finley Hospital. During the event, the Sunshine Circle announced a matching gift of $200,000 to support the project; all the proceeds from the 2018 Gala were matched dollar for dollar by the Sunshine Circle.

In response to the Sunshine Circle’s generosity, Addison Ryan presented the Finley Health Foundation with her gift of $8,100.

The generosity of Sunshine Circle, Addison Ryan, and all of our 2018 Gala guests is truly inspirational. The Finley Health Foundation expresses a sincere thank you for your generosity!

For Charlie and Linda Giese – it just makes sense.

“We love to give,” shares Charlie, a native Dubuquer who married his wife, Linda, more than 40 years ago, “It helps our community, and seems to always come full circle.”

As the owner of Giese Sheet Metal Co. – an organization with rich history in Dubuque, dating back to 1923 when Charlie’s grandfather founded the company - Charlie and Linda have strong roots in Dubuque.

And they’re proud of them.

“Obviously, you’re going to love your hometown,” adds Charlie, “But there’s just something about Dubuque. Nothing can beat the bluffs, the river, the people – we just love it.”

It’s their love of this city that fuels a passion towards community involvement, including area golf-outing fundraisers, non-profit fundraising, and even participation in area board of directors. Charlie, who is currently carrying out his 2nd term as a board member of the Finley Health Foundation, feels especially proud of the projects he’s seen develop for UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital and the Dubuque community.

“In 2013, my wife and I lost our youngest son, Carter, in a tragic car accident,” shares Charlie, “He was only 22 years old and had just graduated from college.”

Having raised their family with a strong foundation and understanding of what it means to give back, Charlie and Linda’s son – an avid athlete and hockey player – went on to have an impact on more than 30 lives as an organ donor. In his memory, Charlie and Linda donated an exam room in Finley Hospital’s new Emergency Department; an exam room with a number that means much more to them than meets the eye.

“Exam room number fourteen,” adds Charlie, “That was the jersey number of one of Carter’s brothers. Carter always looked out for his brothers.”

A philanthropy project currently energizing the Giese family is the expansion of UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital’s outpatient pediatric rehabilitation. A facility that will soon be available to the community in the spring of 2020. This project will expand UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital’s rehabilitation services, allowing the program to meet the growing number and needs of Dubuque’s youngest patients.

Both Charlie and Linda view their philanthropic efforts as much more than just time or money – it’s an action that often results in a ripple effect.

“It’s not just for the hospital. It’s for the kids,” says Linda when thinking about the patients and families who will be impacted by this needed project, “As adults, we can usually control our situations, but they’re just kids.”

It’s an idea that not only Charlie and Linda feel strongly about, but Finley Hospital feels strongly about too. Regardless of a patient’s story, history, diagnosis, or reason for care - every patient deserves the best outcome, every time. It was this belief that played a role in Charlie and Linda’s decision to support Finley Hospital’s Grandview Expansion Project a few years ago, and other projects at Finley.

The decision to donate – whether in the form of a hospital’s exam room, a day set aside to volunteer time, or a financial donation of any

size – creates a strong community. Every little act of support, in any form, assists Finley Hospital in furthering their mission to consistently improve the health of our community and the Tri-State area.

Charlie says it best.

“Can you imagine where this world would be if we didn’t support each other?” he asks, “Everyone struggles. We have to be there for each other.”

A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

ONE YES FOR TOMORROW’S FUTURE.

Dr. Paul and Myra DeLong“Health care was a common topic at our dinner table,” shares Myra DeLong through a smile, when speaking of her and her husband’s children.

“We have a dentist, ophthalmologist, and nursing professor in the family. Even our son-in-law is a nurse-practitioner,” she adds, proudly.

Health care doesn’t just run in the family for Dr. Paul and Myra DeLong. In fact, this local family’s commitment to health care has become a promise for our community’s tomorrow – all due to one decision, one “yes” that will one day impact tomorrow’s future.

“When we heard about Finley Health Foundation’s Legacy Society,” shares Myra, “We knew right away we wanted to be a part of it.”

Dedicating their careers to health care, Myra – a retired nurse – and Paul – a retired oral surgeon with Dubuque’s Great River Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – understand that comprehensive and quality health care doesn’t just create a healthy community; it establishes a strong one. Only second to this commitment is their passion for philanthropy.

Involved with Finley Hospital’s Sunshine Circle volunteers for more than 40 years, in addition to her years with the hospital’s board of directors, Myra sees Finley Hospital as more than just a hospital.

“The employees and staff,” she adds, “they quickly become family.”

In addition to this, both Paul and Myra are immersed in several areas of community involvement – including Dubuque’s local colleges and universities, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, Dubuque Museum of Art, Westminster Presbyterian Church, where they have been members since 1975, international mission trips, and others. However, both Paul and Myra made a conscious decision to support UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital in a different way.

“Finley Hospital was instrumental in the way our family made a living,” adds Paul, “We felt it was important to give back for that reason and others.”

Paul and Myra’s decision to leave a gift to the Finley Health Foundation in their estate plans through the Legacy Society was a decision that elevated the impact of their donation.

For more than a decade, the Legacy Society has been a recognition society honoring generous benefactors who have remembered Finley Hospital in their estate plans. Donors who choose to support Finley Hospital in this manner pave the way for the health and well-being of future generations throughout the Tri-State area.

“Knowing that we have a planned gift for our area hospital is important to us,” says Myra, “We believe in the efficient

access of immediate and quality health care for our community.”

It’s the generosity of contributors today, like Paul and Myra, that creates a legacy of health for patients of tomorrow. Becoming a part of the Legacy Society was a powerful way for the DeLong family to honor the past, while planting seeds for the future.

For more information about becoming a Legacy Society
