• To divide a segment into smaller segments.

Find the coordinates of P so that it divides the line segment with endpoints A(3,2) and B(6,8) such that the ratio of AP to PB is 3 to 2. 1) Find the slope of the line. 2) Add the numbers of the ratio, so you know

how many pieces to partition the segment into (in this case it is 3+2=5).

3) Find the fraction (previous number is your denominator) that you wish to move up the line (in this case it is 3/5).

4) Multiply the rise and run by that fraction. 5) Use your slope in (4) to find point P.
