From the Rabbi’s Study

Rabbi David Lazar

Come gather around peopleWherever you roamAnd admit that the watersAround you have grownAnd accept it that soonYou'll be drenched to the boneAnd if your breath to you is worth savingThen you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stoneFor the times they are a-changin’

These words were an important part of the soundtrackfor many of us growing up in the ‘60s. They validated ourfeelings that not all was well with our world and gave ushope that things could, and indeed would, change. So it was with great joy that many of us received thenews that Bob Dylan will be receiving this year’s NobelPrize for literature next month in Stockholm. We all have our favorite Dylan songs. One of mine isGotta Serve Somebody:

You may be an ambassador to England or FranceYou may like to gamble, you might like to danceYou may be the heavyweight champion of the worldYou may be a socialite with a long string of pearlsBut you're gonna have to serve somebody, yesIndeed you're gonna have to serve somebodyWell, it may be the devil or it may be the LordBut you're gonna have to serve somebody

For me, this is a song about each of us being part of agreater picture, a larger plan. So often we delude ourselvesinto thinking that we by ourselves, or even our relationshipswith others, exist in a vacuum. Whatever decisions wethink we’re making, says Dylan, will in one way or anothersupport all sorts of things going on around us. It is that, Ibelieve, which we should constantly strive to keep in mindin all that we do. A Nobel Prize for Bob Dylan? Well indeed, the timesthey are a changin’… One of the musicians who played with Dylan in the 60’swas a young Jewish guy named Mike Bloomfield. He laterwent on to become one of the best known blues guitaristsin the United States though his life – like too many talentedmusicians of the late 20th century – ended in tragedy. Anewly revised edition of Michael Bloomfield: The Rise andFall of an American Guitar Hero, by Ed Ward and BillyGibbons just came out last month. In it, we read that at anearly age on the North side of Chicago, Bloomfield found away to express a deep sense of spiritualism at his barmitzvah ceremony. This is how his father Allen Bloomfieldlater recalled:

“It’s like his first performance, if you will,” Allensaid. “He goes beyond the call of duty of justreciting the Haftorah, which is the part you have tomemorize. .... Michael added certain dramatics to

it for— I don’t know, we’ll just call it ‘theatricaleffect.’ He would look up at the ceiling, raise hiseyes, and sort of have a dialogue with, if you will,or speak directly to, the Absolute…”

Soon after, with the help of the family’s African-American maid, he began visiting some of the blues clubson the southern side of town. It was there that heeventually got a chance to jam with some of the greatestblues legends like Muddy Waters. Bloomfield laterremembered:

“I would go down there thinking I was really somehot stuff, you know, ’cause I had some fast fingersand I had plenty of licks, but I didn’t have no soulor nothing. All I had was that speed and somebrash Jewboy confidence.”

Indeed, it was a bit strange that this upper middle classJewish kid was getting involved in this form of music thatwas so intrinsic to the African-American experience. Yethe did, and he got really good at it. Al Kooper, whocollaborated with both Bloomfield and Dylan oncereminisced:

Michael used to say, 'It's a natural. Black peoplesuffer externally in this country. Jewish peoplesuffer internally. The suffering's the mutualfulcrum for the blues.”

Whether or not you agree with this way of looking atour two peoples’ historical narratives, it can not be deniedthat the blues have played a central role in so much of themusic we all listen to today. We are blessed here in the Coachella Valley with ourown Jewish blues virtuoso, Deanna Bogart. You mighthave seen her holding court at Woody’s over the lastcouple of years on Experimental Wednesdays or havelistened to one of her many albums. While she plays awide range of music, the blues – in so many varied andwonderful forms – are at the heart of her work. And so with great pleasure we look forward to hostingDeanna, together with some of the most talented localmusicians: Chuck Alvarez, Rabbi Andrew Bentley, BobGross, Bob Hamilton and Jeff Olson at the Jews Do theBlues concert in honor of my official installation (by MayorRobert Moon) as Rabbi of Temple Isaiah. We promise awide range of music – not just the blues – and some of myown commentary on each of the songs through which Ihope to share my vision of the future for us as acommunity. I know that for many of you the question still remains:A blues concert in lieu of a proper rabbinic installation, complete with long speeches, pomp and a gala dinner? My answer is: You bet! For indeed, “the times they are achangin’!” Looking forward to seeing everyone here at theTemple on November 27 at 4:00!

Dear Friends,

What a great ‘yontif’ this has been! TheRabbi’s sermons were current, pertinentand compelling. The music was incredible!Attendance was great. The break-fast wasdelicious and everyone there enjoyed beingable to end the holiday at a meal together.

As always, there were so many whoworked so very hard to make the servicesrun smoothly. I want to take a minute and thank everyonewho participated. (Somehow I know I’ll miss someone andfor that, my heartfelt apologies in advance!).

Thank you to Harold Clumeck, Richard Jeffrey, IrwinSacks, Chris Spellman, Gary Stone, Jake Wright, GilGold, Spencer Howard, Ron Martinez, Soo Borson, RoniSpetalnick, Kerry Turner, Peter Gordon, Alan Moss, Pollyand Avi Showalter, Lyle Sachs, Shoshana Barer, BrendaCastano, Bob Fey, Shelley Miller-Mantell and Ira Helf,You made members and guests feel welcome, helped peoplefind seats, helped keep the foyer quiet during services andhelped to make walking into our Temple a pleasantexperience. Thank you to all who helped pass out herbsduring Havdallah, making it an even nicer start to 5777. Sandie Ovesen, you were here helping to greet and solveproblems and make our guests feel welcome. ChristopherGreene and Larea Pettersen, yes, you are staff members, but you both went above and beyond. Thank you! And, ofcourse, all of us that received an aliyah, had a reading orplayed a part in the service know that we are so thankful forMiriam Bent. It is thanks to Miriam that we know when to beprepared, what we need to do and generally help to make ourcongregants look together and polished. Thank You ALL!

I want to remind you that if for some reason you forgot tocomplete your Kol Nidre pledge card you can still do it online, call the office, or fill out the card that we will send you in themail. Thanks to all of you we expect a higher goal that we’vehit in a long time and this will certainly help us tighten the gapin our budget.

We have two very interesting lecturescoming up in November. On Sunday,November 6 at 4:00 pm, here at the Temple,we will have Dr. Ted Merwin, Author of“Pastrami On Rye” speak about “Homelandfor the Jewish Soul: the History of the JewishDeli in America”. And there will be a chanceto sample some pastrami after the lecture! There is moreinformation in this Chai Lights, and you can alsocontact Ron Martinez at 323-251-5250.

During November we will finally officiallywelcome our wonderful spiritual leader,Rabbi David Lazar. Instead of a typicalinstallation, we will be honoring him with aJews Do the Blues Concert on Sunday,November 27th. Rabbi will be officiallywelcomed to our community by PalmSprings Mayor, Robert Moon. We have a member of the board who isworking so hard to make our fundraiser anincredible success this year. Carol Fragen,on behalf of the entire congregation, THANKYOU! On December 10 we will have aconcert with Linda Lavin and Billy Stritch atthe Annenberg Theatre at the Palm SpringsArt Museum.

While my favorite performance of LindaLavin was her guest appearance on the new series “Mom,”many of you know her from her movies, television showsand Broadway musicals. If you aren’t familiar with her, takea minute and look her up. She is awesome. Honestly, the30 minutes on the sitcom “Mom” is the most hilarious 30minutes I’ve ever spent watching television (and I watchlots!). Did you know that Billy Stritch has also performed asthe pianist for Liza Minelli (amongst many other things). Let’s support Carol Fragen’s hard work, support theTemple and treat yourself to a marvelous evening byattending! Purchase your tickets by going online to Annenbergtheatre.org or by calling 760-325-4490. I lookforward to seeing you all there!
