1. How did the rule of Czar Alexander II end & when did this occur?

• Revolutionaries assassinated him.

• 1881

• Why?

• Did this because of how slowly politicalchange was occurring.

2. List at least 5 ways that Czar Alexander III exerted his autocratic rule in Russia.

• Autocratic:• Relating to a ruler who hasabsolute power

• Stopped all reforms in Russia.• Labeled many as “dangerous”

• (anyone who questioned his authority, worshipped outside Roman Orthodox Church, or spoke a language other than Russian)

• Censored documents & letters.• Secret police force spied in schools.• Political prisoners sent to Siberia.• Oppressed other national groups.• Made Russian official language & forbade any others.• Violence against Jews in Russia.

3. When Nicholas II becomes the czar in 1894, was he any different than Alexander III? What does it say in the text that lets you know this?

• # of factories more than doubled (1863 – 1900)

• Investors + raised taxes = increase in steel industry

• 1900 – Russia world’s 4th largest steel producer

5. What are 4 problems that came about during Russia’s industrialization?

• Harsh working conditions, low wages, child labor.• Govt. banned unions.• Workers were unhappy. (discontent)

6. How did workers who were unhappy with their conditions respond to Russian authorities?

• They went on strike!

7. What were the two groups that Russian Marxists split into in 1903 & why did they do so?

• Mensheviks & Bolsheviks

• Split over revolutionary tactics.

8. Legend says that one event turned Lenin into a revolutionary. What is this event?

• 1887, Lenin’s brother was hanged for plotting to kill the czar.
