Palmerston North Girls’ HighSchool was at the forefront ofthis year’s Manawatu StandardSecondary School Sports Awards,with two of its students winning

top awards.Michaela Curtis won the supreme

sportswoman award, while Paula Radichwon the officials’ award.

Michaela, 17, has been playing hockeysince she was four and was introduced tothe sport by her father, who also plays.

She has been a finalist in the awardssince 2008, but was surprised to win.

Known for her speed on the field,Michaela has also played tennis and cricket,but gave up these sports to concentrate onhockey.

Her dedication to the sport has paid off.In 2010, Michaela has played for NewZealand at the Youth Olympics inSingapore, had a second year in the CentralMysticks national league team and playedin the New Zealand Tiger Turf junior team,which beat Queensland 3-0 in a series in

Hamilton last month. Those wereMichaela’s final games of the season andafter a short break she is now back training.

Michaela credits coaches Greg Nicol andMarcus Emery as having the biggestinfluence on her hockey career. She willreturn to Palmerston North Girls’ High forher final year next year.

Paula began umpiring netball as a year-10 student, while she was playing thesport. Each school that took part in thelocal netball competition had to supplyumpires. Paula volunteered and found sheenjoyed umpiring. She has gone on to gainher New Zealand Umpiring Badge and is amember of the New Zealand under-19netball umpiring squad.

She admits that when she first qualifiedas an umpire, it was challenging umpiringadult games, but the local netballassociation has an umpiring panel thatprovides training. ‘‘They teach you how tobe assertive, once you learn that theplayers respect you.’’

A year-13 student, Paula will begin

veterinarian studies at Massey Universitynext year, so she will still be a force on thelocal netball courts.

She has also made her mark as a squashplayer, being a member of the PNGHSsenior A squash team that won the NewZealand Secondary Schools TeamsChampionship.

Palmerston North Girls’ High Schoolstudents Danielle Fourie and ElizabethHorne were the recipients of the two SportManawatu Scholarships.

Winner of the Supreme Sporstmanaward, Mathew Waghorn, a year-13student, has been mountainbiking since hewas seven. Over the years, he has playedrugby but has given that up formountainbiking.

Mathew says his coach, Paul MacDermid,has had the most impact on his speed, but

overall, his father, Blair, had the mostimpact through his support.

Mathew will spend next year workingand training, and will go to university thenext year. He is gearing up for the season,which starts in December and continuesuntil March, so he is in full training mode,spending 10 to 15 hours a week on thebike.

Mathew, 17, won the national schoolscross country title at Levin, won theOceania title in Dunedin and competed ata World Cup event in New York and at theworld under-19 championships in Quebec.

The Team of the Year was PalmerstonNorth Boys’ High School’s First XI footballteam. It claimed national honours bywinning its first national tournament since1995, and was the first team outsideAuckland to win since then.

Sacrifice, discipline andenthusiasm were threecharacteristics outlined byMcDonald’s Manawatu Jetscoach Ryan Weisenberg as

necessary for success, during lastweek’s 2010 Manawatu StandardSecondary School Sports Awards.

His audience was already wellacquainted with such characteristics.

Palmerston North’s ConventionCentre was filled with successfulsporting secondary school studentsand their proud families as theyreceived awards for their athleticachievements.

Nominations covered 32 differentcodes, from artistic roller skating tounicycling, with 53 New Zealandrepresentatives in the mix.

Mr Weisenberg was the guestspeaker. He is an inspiring personality,having worked with professionalbasketballers Shaquille O’Neal andKobe Bryant. His advice? ‘‘Start fast,finish strong, but never at the expenseof fundamentals. Unbridled enthusiasmis second to none, whether it be on thecourt, field or in the classroom.

‘‘Don’t stop because you thinkyou’ve reached the top, because there’s

always a next level,’’ he said.The supreme awards were a high-

light of the evening, with Official, Team,Sportswoman and Sportsman of theYear saved until last. All winners werefull of enthusiasm, clearly loving whatthey do.

what she enjoyed most about being anofficial was being part of the game andwatching players develop.

Advice from the captain of thePalmerston North Boys’ High School XIfootball team to his players was ‘‘nevergive up’’, obviously paying off withtheir Team of the Year award.

The finalists for the ManawatuStandard Supreme Female andSupreme Male sportsperson were allhigh quality, but in the end hockeyplayer Michaela Curtis and mountain-biker Mat Waghorn won the judgesover.

Michaela’s sporting dream is tocompete at an Olympic Games, whileMat’s dream is to become aprofessional mountainbiker and attenda World Cup.

Sport Manawatu’s secondary schoolssports adviser Ben Koch was pleasedwith the awards. ‘‘It was great to seethat students were so proud of theirachievements. A big well done to allthe finalists,’’ he said.

The Manawatu Standard SecondarySchool Sports Awards were proudlysupported by naming sponsor, theManawatu Standard, and supportingsponsors Student City and Fisher Print.
