The harmonious union of the long-established set amongst the modern-day was once again visible in fascinating South Melbourne during the 2013 series of The Block, where ‘sky-high’ prices were achieved due to the overhaul of a run down Park Street site into wow-factor State-of-the –Art apartments fetching astronomical auction results.

Apart from the spotlights, crowds and cameras, South Melbourne has many highlights this month. With thanks to a fabulous overview by writer Simon Bailey, sisters Nikki, Kate & Sam Maskiell celebrate a decade of serving up gastronomic delights and service to the people of South Melbourne and beyond as Gas Eatery & Supplies proudly commemorates their latest milestone with a selection of new gourmet menu items focussed on not replicating, but celebrating how good food should be served.

Don’t leave Father’s Day gifts to the last minute, we are proud to offer a few interesting gift options available locally to make Dad’s Day a little bit more interesting than the traditional socks and hankies.

The Craft Cubed Festival is taking over Melbourne this August and South

Melbourne Market is the place to be with a range of varied special events both free and ticketed which again merges the styles of the past with the trends of today.

We welcome Dr John and the team at Freedom Dental. Take up the opportunity to have your dental questions answered. We are happy to pass on questions with names withheld if you wish.

Lastly, big hearty congratulations to our regular South Melbourne Street Scene contributor, Andrew Powell on the new addition to his family – always reliable and genuinely committed to highlighting South Melbourne in his very unique and dedicated way.

Have a wonderful few months; we will be back bringing you a stockings-worth of nearly Christmas Cheer!

‘Diverse’, ‘evolving’, and ‘visual’ are words that sisters Kate, Sam, and Nikki Maskiell use to describe their Coventry Street establishment, Gas Eatery & Supplies. For the past decade, the sisters’ hard work and clear vision to be different has garnered quite a reputation amongst South Melbourne gastronomes. Serving up Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and South American inspired fare, the Maskiells have found a niche in being unique.

Gas feeds an eclectic bunch of punters daily, who are as much a

smorgasbord as the menu. At the communal tables, creative types rub shoulders with teenagers, who politely pass newspapers to retirees. A mixed bag of diners is exactly what the sisters want to see – they refuse to buy into the pretentious “food thing” happening elsewhere. There’s also a tribe of dedicated followers who fi rst met the sisters growing up at Tartine, the Armadale institution run by the Maskiell family where the sisters honed their craft.

The Maskiells have made a point of not blending in with other cafes in

the local area, and growing up in the kitchen has meant they know exactly what they are doing. Firstly, ordering lunch at Gas is akin to being fed in an exotic marketplace. Or being a kid in a candy store. Rather than opting for a stagnant old printed menu, the girls wanted to mix things up through the guise of an ‘order with your eyes’ tapas concept. Kate explains “we travelled a fair bit around Spain and Portugal and parts of the Middle East, and Turkey, where you used to go into places and just select what you wanted. That’s what we wanted to replicate here.” Aside from their travels, the Maskiells’ multicultural approach to good food was shaped by a childhood in inner city Sydney, where friends were Greek and meals out were Lebanese. In the vein of perusing a bazaar in Marrakech, Gas diners can marvel at the well-stocked lunch cabinets, where options change daily.

Gas has become quite well known for breaking a pretty mean fast. Their most popular breakfast item, a signature dish of Middle Eastern eggs, is sure to leave one never satisfi ed with a bowl of cornfl akes again. This masterpiece is a slow cooked stewed tomato sauce, in which eggs are cooked with cumin, paprika, and haloumi, all served with Turkish bread in a homespun pan atop a chopping block. It took a little while for Gas Eatery’s eclectic breakfast options to take off, but diners have become increasingly confi dent in venturing beyond the poached eggs for something more exotic.

While the girls shut shop late afternoon, they’ve got your evening feed done like a dinner. Tartine was somewhat a local pioneer of high quality take-home meals, and the girls haven’t forgotten their roots. Most popular is the beef lasagna (the hearty, meaty kind Nonna used to make), but also consider a culinary cruise across the Ionian to sample some Greek moussaka. For a winter warmer, the sisters also whip up a selection of take home soups tubs.

A sizeable chunk of the Gas trade is from their extensive catering menu. Sam tells me that people are over cucumber sandwiches these days (sorry, Buckingham Palace), which renders the girls’ Middle Eastern and Spanish inspired catering menu talk of the town. The Maskiells can whip up spectacular platters for special occasions, and also offer seasonally inspired Spring Racing Carnival and Christmas catering menus.

A meal at Gas Eatery & Supplies is a worthy candidate for the bucket list of any Melbourne gourmand, or anyone in the mood for something a little bit quirky. As Kate puts it: “if you start replicating other people, it’s not your thing, and you don’t get the same joy out of doing something.” So step on the gas, and check out what makes this place just the right amount of different.

I’ve always liked walking and when you have a baby, walking is essential and often has a purpose. At 8 weeks old a baby has more appointments, places to go, people to see and things to do than most parents. If the walking doesn’t have to go to an appointment then it’s trying to get them to sleep!

The baby has made Bank Street a very important place. The Town Hall and its magnifi cent façade hide the parent’s group, health nurse and library (albeit temporarily) in South Melbourne. Opposite here is the Police Station – very useful for certifi cation of documents!

Of course, there isn’t just baby to consider…

On the other side of Ferrars Street towards Albert Park, on the corner of

Bank Street you can fi nd caffeine shots from the people who also own Zappa’s by the Town Hall on Bank Street or have a beer at the Railway Hotel that true to South Melbourne form has been used as a location for TV shows – the latest being House Husbands (I think). Standing on the crossroads of Cecil Street and Bank Street, you can see the Shrine of Remembrance. It’s amazing really that the view manages to dodge every piece of construction that has otherwise affected the view across South Melbourne towards King’s Domain. Very hard to imagine the area not shrouded by apartments, offi ces, car dealerships and a well-known purveyor of all things offi ce-related.

Back to the Town Hall that remains a prime location for TV, fi lm and wedding

photos, and of course, Zappa’s café next to the Town Hall goes without needing an introduction being well-known by many. I fi rst found out about the café from a taxi driver coming back from the airport. He was still savouring the coffee he’d bought that morning. The memory of coffee lingers! The other end of Bank Street has Scuttlebutt – great coffee and a lunch time snack to see you through the day.

On the Kingsway side of Clarendon Street, sits a little area that is establishing itself as the media hub. In an amazing Art Deco building branded the Melbourne Butter Supply Co Pty Ltd now lives Deluxe and Digital Pictures TV Production studios. I’m sure there are other companies lurking behind those doors that make themselves known to people they want to only. This

building has attracted some interest with lovers of Art Deco architecture. I wonder how they felt about the purple paint job that shrouds the exterior now. Not very traditional, but I like it as long as it’s not on my house.

Opposite here is the future of media. The JMC Media Academy is a college that may be teaching Australia’s future Oscar winners, music moguls and industry power brokers. From those little acorns…

Then there are some of the most beautiful houses. This pocket of residential bliss is my dream for the future. Again, it seems that South Melbourne history makes a willing accomplice to contemporary and an important part of Victoria’s cultural health.

The Victorian Coalition Government has announced that a stormwater harvesting project at iconic Albert Park Lake will receive the fi rst grant from the $50 million Living Victoria Fund. The Albert Park Stormwater Harvesting and Southbank Flood Mitigation Scheme will receive $995,000 from the Living Victoria Fund for a feasibility study, plan designs and site works.

The project displays a new whole-of water-cycle strategy that was developed to ensure Melbourne has ample water for all its needs, while keeping downward pressure on costs.

“This project demonstrates that making smarter use of all available water sources has huge benefi ts, and in the case of Albert Park there are fi ve clear wins,” Minister for Water Peter Walsh said.

• The project will put more water into Albert Park Lake, it will save 150 million litres of drinking water annually, and it will save an estimated $330,000 on water bills each year.

• By keeping and using this stormwater in the Albert Park area, the project is also providing fl ood mitigation for nearby areas and it means less polluted water running out into Port Phillip Bay.

• While the fi nal plan will be developed as part of the project, it is anticipated additional treated stormwater could be used for watering the Junction Oval, Albert Park Golf Course, Fawkner Park, Catani Gardens and trees along St Kilda Road.

• Making better use of stormwater, rainwater and wastewater not only reduces demand on Melbourne’s precious drinking water supplies, it also delivers environmental and economic dividends and it reduces future need for costly mega-scale infrastructure like more desalination plants.

• The Victorian Coalition came to government promising better, smarter planning for Melbourne’s future water needs and we are delivering on that promise with the establishment of the Offi ce of Living Victoria, the development of the Melbourne’s Water Future strategy and through support for local projects like Albert Park Stormwater Harvesting with the $50 million Living Victoria Fund.

Q: I am a high school teacher and want to get my teeth straightened. I’m not comfortable getting metal braces

though, especially with my profession, you can imagine what ammunition that would give my students! Please help.

A: You are not alone! It’s amazing how many adult patients dream of a straighter smile but are wary of the unfortunate stigma that comes with metal braces, especially when your job is quite a visible role.

Invisalign Clear Braces seems to be the fl avour of the year, with many adult patients allured by the features and benefi ts. So, what is Invisalign? They are a series of removable clear aligners to straighten your teeth and are virtually invisible, with no metal or wires involved. The aligners are to be worn about 20-22 hours per day, and replaced sequentially every 2 weeks.

The main advantages for you would

naturally be the fact that they are clear, and hence not noticeable to your students. Also, because you can remove them for eating or drinking, they are convenient and make oral hygiene so much easier when compared to metal braces.

If this is something that makes you smile, the fi rst step would be to make an appointment with an Invisalign accredited dentist who will be able to tell you if you are an eligible Invisalign candidate. ‘Platinum Elite’ is a designation given by Invisalign to the dentist who treats the highest number of cases, so that would be a good starting point when looking for an Invisalign dentist with extensive experience.

Dr John Hagiliassis (Platinum Elite provider of Invisalign) is the principal dentist at Freedom Dental Spa, a long standing dental practice serving the city of Port Phillip and Melbourne for over 30 years and offers high quality dentistry and six star service in a relaxing spa like environment.
