VOLUME 41, NUMBER 3Summer 2015

Graduation time at BSM is bittersweet. The graduates are excitedabout life beyond their familiar school, but they are nervousand anxious about what lies ahead. Parents want what is bestfor their child, of course, and have their own mix of emotionsat graduation time. Can we afford the cost of college? Did mygraduate pick the right program of study at the right college? Will they be safe? What will it be like without them at home?

Recognizing these mixed emotions, my baccalaureate speech tothe Class of 2015 had three main themes: you are ready for col-lege; remember that you are strong, smart, and beautiful; andcontinue to have an active faith life. Stated another way, I wastelling the students not to be anxious because God loves themand thinks that they are perfect just the way they are. The faculty and staff of BSM feel the same way about our students.

Our natural instinct as educators is to recognize that our graduates are ready for college, and to encourage them to stride out boldly, as they can learn little more from us.However, we want to support them on this next phase of their life journey. This is why we created the Red KnightEngagement Network, a LinkedIn-based student and alumni

support system. The Network allows our students and alumni toleverage social capital, a digital portfolio, and the inherent desire ofRed Knights to help each other, in order to gain admission intotheir college of choice, secure an internship, or land a new job. To find out more about the Red Knight Engagement Network go towww.BSMschool.org/RKEN.

In closing, the Class of 2015 was full of engaging, energetic, andintelligent young people. The world is a better place because theyare in it, and I am wildly optimistic about the future because of thisgeneration of Red Knights.

If your travels bring you to the Twin Cities this summer, pleasestop by the school and say “hi.”

Forever Red and White,

Rachel Tondryk Hubly ’04, a Spanish 3 language teacher atBSM and Natalie LeSage ’10, a first-year teacher at RisenChrist’s dual immersion program, were seated next to eachother at a dinner celebrating Catholic School educators. Theybegan discussing their roles and challenges in the classroom.Rachel came to understand that Risen Christ is a smallCatholic school in Minneapolis with limited resources and 97%of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Natalie explained

Cover Story

A Benilde-St. Margaret’s alumni event last February brought together two alums who solved a real-world problem they didn’t know existed until they met.

Risen Christ had just started a dual immersion (Spanish andEnglish) program for kindergarten-3rd grade students. Thewheels started turning and Rachel wondered if her Spanish 3 students at BSM could create personalized, bilingual children’sworkbooks for Natalie’s students at Risen Christ. They decided to partner and embark upon a collaborative projectbetween schools.

The Spanish 3 students researched the essential elements of abilingual children’s book. They also collected answers to ques-tionnaires sent to Risen Christ students asking about their inter-ests, families and what they wanted to be when they grew up.The high school students then developed a storyboard and illustrations unique to each child. The books also needed specialtemplates for handwriting activities so the young immersion students could practice their writing in both languages. Once thefinal drafts were printed, the books were laminated so dry erasemarkers could be used on them over and over again. Finally, two copies of each book were printed and bound, one for theimmersion student, and one for the Risen Christ library.

by Lisa Lenhart-Murphy ‘86 and Rachel Kuzma Olson ‘93

Natalie LeSage ‘10 and Rachel Tondryk Hubly ‘04 met at a dinner hosted by the BSM alumni department for graduates workingin Catholic education in the Twin Cities. The event was an extension of the annualCatholic Schools Week celebration.

Auggie Moore ‘16 was intent on sharing astory he created with two young scholars.

Students from BSM took a field trip in April to deliver the booksthey made. BSM students spent time playing on the playgroundand eating lunch with their new friends. After lunch, eachimmersion student was presented a personalized book from theirBSM buddy based on their answers from the questionnaire. Onekindergartner remarked, “That’s me!” when he looked throughthe pages for the first time. Another Risen Christ student asked,“I get to KEEP this book?” A first grader wondered “You madethis book for ME?” There was an outpouring of thankfulness andexcitement from the young readers and their teachers for the giftsthey had just received.

For the high school students, the experience provided a concrete way of making a difference in the life of a child. It was also a rewarding and interactive way for students to usetheir knowledge and gifts to help others. Rachel and Natalie arealready improving the process and planning this collaboration for the next school year. You just never know what problems you might solve when you introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you.

Ross earns Reger Award English teacher and speech coach MauraBrew tends to have a flair for the dramatic. But when Ms. Brew states, “Mary PatRoss is a force of nature; her passion, drive, commitment and work ethic arebeyond compare,” it is no exaggeration.

While at BSM, Mary Pat captained thespeech and cross country teams, served asthe managing editor of the Knight Errantand the president of the Students forHuman Life club, earned a President’sVolunteer Service Award four consecutiveyears, was formally recognized three timesfor servant leadership and character, andparticipated in debate, National HonorSociety, and Link Crew, just to name afew. It’s no wonder that BSM faculty andstaff members selected her as the Al RegerAward female recipient, acknowledgingher dedication to faith and service. Withunlimited energy to burn, Mary Pat couldestablish an Olympic event for leadership. And that would be just her style. As Ms. Brew says, “Mary Pat is nevercontent to sit back and watch. She takes the lead.”

An outstanding example is when Mary Patsingle-handedly arranged for activist andauthor Sister Helen Prejean to visit BSM inFall 2013. Mary Pat explains, “After usingexcerpts from [her] book, Dead ManWalking, in speech competition, I instantlybecame passionate about her work. For overa year I worked to secure a spot on her busyspeaking schedule. I also arranged for apanel of guest speakers to join Prejean at myschool. Panelists included criminal justiceexperts, law enforcement officials, and aformer death row inmate, DamonThibodeaux, who was acquitted after 15years of imprisonment. Because this eventmarked the first time Prejean appeared publicly with a former death row inmate, our panel was featured on local news stations and on ABC’s 20/20 newsmagazine.

I also was successful in raising $1,700 instudent donations for Prejean’s Pull thePlug Foundation. And as I watched students continue to debate topics surrounding the death penalty weeks aftershe left, I knew Prejean’s story would continue to make a difference in myschool and community.”

It did, and so did Mary Pat. With othercauses dear to her heart, she was invited toserve on a community theatre Board ofDirectors, prompting her to lobby to start ascholarship fund for low-income childrenand families wishing to participate in theatre. Her efforts raised over $10,000.She later procured a large grant thatspurred collaboration between the theaterand BSM engineering students, who crafted lifelike theatrical puppets for a production.

Mary Pat’s next stage will be at BostonCollege, where she plans to focus on psychology and business. There, peoplewill likely begin to agree with Ms. Brew’sassessment that “Mary Pat is a born leaderwho inspires all those around her to stepup and give their best.”

The BSM community sure knows that to be true.

Al Reger Award

The Al Reger Award is given out each year to two students,

one male and one female, chosen by the BSM faculty

and staff, for “outstanding dedication

and zeal to the service of God and school.”

Al Reger and Al Blasing Award

Weber wins twice

As a fitting conclusion to his Red Knightcareer, Jay Weber was recognized for hisservice to school and community and his athletic accomplishments. He was named the winner of both the Al Reger and the Al Blasing award.

Jay is an outstanding role model and, asAthletics/Activities Director Jerry Pettingersums up quite nicely, “A Red Knight throughand through.” His hard-working, humble, talented and gracious manner has been recognized many times over by his peers, teachers, and coaches. Guidance counselorAmanda Anderson describes Jay as “easilyone of the most selfless, humble and extraor-dinary students I have counseled over thepast twelve years. He is kind and polite notjust to his friends, but to everyone he meets.Jay gives of himself on a daily basis –through his volunteer work at CourageCenter where he coaches basketball for people with disabilities, when he tutors hispeers after school, when he spends extra time mentoring the younger players on hisfootball and lacrosse teams and when hetakes time to play with the young children inhis neighborhood. His maturity, responsiblenature, respect for others and positive attitude are all reasons why he has been continuously chosen to lead his peers – onthe football field, as a student council classboard member and senior class president, onthe lacrosse field etc. Jay walks the walk of a true servant leader in all that he does athome, while volunteering in the community,on the fields and in the halls.”

History repeats itselfIn a Red Knight first, Jay and his father,Kevin Weber ‘83, are the first father/son

duo to win the Al Blasing award.

by Katie DesLauriers Sullivan ’99

An All-Conference and All-State Academicfootball player and defensive MVP inlacrosse, Jay also received the Jerry MillerChristian Service Award in football. He is heading to Indiana University inBloomington, Indiana, where he’ll be study-ing at the Kelley School of Business andhoping to play club lacrosse. Jay describeshimself as “extremely honored to win the Al Blasing award. I have been able to playwith people who won this award during mycareer at BSM, people that I consider myrole models, but the fact that I get to sharethis award with my biggest role model, myown father, is an incredible accomplishment, one that I am very proud of.”

Although Jay and his father, Kevin Weber ’83,were both winners of the Al Blasing Award, they played very different sports. Kevin wasa soccer, basketball, and track and fieldstandout during his Red Knight athleticcareer while Jay concentrated on football andlacrosse. Reflecting on the lucky experienceof being both a Red Knight student and parent, Kevin states, “When I was a studentat BSM, there was a definite sense of com-munity, school spirit and pride among thestudents, faculty and staff which is absolutelythe same today. As a current BSM parent, I still see the common threads the school has always had, specifically: excellent academics, a Catholic and Christian environment, high participation rates in athleticsand extracurriculars and a commitment tohelp others in need. There is a fierce loyaltyto being a Red Knight and thus the sayingwe've all heard, ‘Once a Red Knight, alwaysa Red Knight.’”

How lucky for BSM that this apple didn’tfall too far from the tree.

President honors six seniors Dr. Kevin Gyolai presented his President’s Award to six members of the Class of2015: Mark Falls, Hannah Scherer, Eddie McHugh, Adam Grazzini, AzzairiaJackson-Sherrod, andMargaux Brink. They served the BSM community on thecourts, on the field, at the range, on the slopes, in the media, in print, in NHS, in peerministry, Link Crew, Student Council, and RKVC. They were good students, talentedathletes, strong servant leaders, spirit leaders and agents working for change. They were excellent representatives of their class with a wide variety of talents andcontributions to the greater community. They made BSM a better place for everyone.

Athena Award

Softball standoutheaded to the U

A six-year varsity letter winner in softball and a four-year letter winner in volleyball, Maddieracked up numerous awards during her career as a Red Knight. She served as a softball captain for three years, and her success at the plate earned her a school record for maintaining a .600+ batting average over four years. She set other school records forRBIs, hits, and stolen bases as well. The successful end to her athletic career at BSM has given Maddie the title of top female athlete in the Class of 2015.

This Minnesota Ms. Softball finalist also captured four All-Conference awards, five All-Section spots, two All-State honors, andfour Most Valuable Player nominations. Off the field, but in the gym, Maddie served up anAll-Conference Honorable Mention and an All-Conference Academic Award for her efforts on the volleyball court. Maddie’sextracurricular resume does not end here. She was a member of the National HonorSociety and participated in the Red KnightVolunteer Corps and Link Crew, in addition to serving volunteer hours at Feed My Starving Children and Interfaith Outreach & Community Partners (IOCP).

As the recipient of the 2015 Athena Award,Maddie Houlihan knows how to hit a home run both on and off the field.

Maddie has had plenty of successful moments as a high school athlete, but two memories stand out in her mind. Beating the Orono volleyball team last fall was an exciting end toher volleyball season. The other highlight iswhen seventh grade sister Sarah was brought up to play one varsity softball game alongsideher. Maddie took up her usual position at firstand Sarah played next to her at second base. It was a passing-of-the-torch milestone in her athletic career at Benilde-St. Margaret’s and will always hold a special place in Maddie’s heart.

The oldest of three children, Maddie also has a sophomore brother Alex. Maddie admits family is “really important to me” and notes that her parents have given tremendous supportas both mentors and fans. Maddie’s softballcareer began with t-ball and transitioned intofastpitch around third grade. In the BSM off-season, Maddie plays for MN VortexFastpitch. A serious athlete, Maddie has invested many hours perfecting her swing, running the bases, and taking infield practice.

Looking ahead, this first baseman is excitedabout where she is headed, stating, “I feel likemy hard work is paying off.” Maddie will bepacking for the University of Minnesota this fall where she will play softball for the GoldenGophers while pursuing a degree in business.

Although they hoped for a berth in the state tournament this year, the Red Knights fell shortlosing to Buffalo and Hopkins in the sectionchampionship. As she steps up to the plate nextyear, Maddie will just have to set her sights on anational championship with the Gophers instead.

speech at the eighth grade graduation, Carol remarked, “As I leaveBSM, I want to thank parents and students for the opportunity towork with you. A lot of people can’t say they love their job but youhave made it impossible for me not to love mine and you are why itis so difficult to leave!”

Faculty of the Year and Retiree

This year’s Faculty of the Year award winner, science teacher MarkLex, is another outstanding member of BSM’s community who willbe sorely missed as he enters retirement.

In 1706, John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of teachers, listedwhat he believed to be the twelve virtues of a good teacher: gravity, silence, humility, prudence, wisdom, patience, reserve, gentleness, zeal, vigilance, piety, and generosity. While these words are notcommonly used to describe educators today, Mark’s career at BSMis a testament to the timelessness and relevance of De La Salle’sdoctrine.

Mark’s quiet and assured teaching style exemplify the virtues ofgravity and silence. He creates a classroom atmosphere that encour-ages curiosity and innovative learning. Ever humble, Mark is morecomfortable working behind the scenes, ensuring the attention andpraise go to his hardworking students. Prudence, wisdom andpatience are evident in how Mark is able to break down complexscientific concepts to make them accessible and understandable tohis students. Unflappable and always kind when dealing withstressed and confused high-schoolers, Mark embodies reserve andgentleness. A dedicated and caring teacher, Mark’s zeal and passion

Staff of the Year and Retiree

“I feel deeply connected to this school and this community. I lovebeing part of what BSM has become. I’m touched by the award.BSM has a special spirit that can transform you.”

With these words, Carol McNamara quietly but graciously acceptedthe Staff of the Year award given at an all-school award ceremony inMay to the most deserving BSM staff member. Every year, staffmembers are nominated by peers and the recipient is chosen by anadministrative team. Comments from colleagues nominating Carolfor the award include, “Carol embodies every value we try to instillin our young students. She is a wonderful role model of Catholicvalues...” “She believes in treating each student with individual loveand respect. She tries always to find the good in every person, oftenadvocating for issues on behalf of a student.” Perhaps the best illus-tration of her dedicated and nurturing leadership style is summed upby a statement from junior high Spanish teacher Megan Hansen,“Carol is a wonderful role model for all leaders in our school. She isvery thoughtful and careful with her words. She supports all teachersequally and I have always felt, ‘she’s got my back.’”

Carol was instrumental in the formation of the junior high 26 yearsago. Over that time, there have been plenty of challenges as well assuccesses. Through it all, Carol has worked determinedly to create apositive and supportive environment for both students and teachers. In May of this year, Carol announced her retirement from BSM. Herlegacy in building the junior high will forever be etched in the wallsof this institution. More importantly, though, are the lives she hastouched during her tenure at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. for science is evident in his teaching. Ever vigilant for opportunitiesto help, Mark comes in early and stays late. He is a true servant-leader and a man of faith and he demonstrates piety in how easilyhe finds the good in his students.

The last virtue on de La Salle’s list describes Mark to a tee, generosity. Mark has unselfishly given of his time and talent inmany areas of BSM life. When he wasn’t coaching or workingwith the senior class board he was the face behind the camera capturing Red Knights in action at countless events. He also was a founder of the school’s green movement. Working with theEnvironmental Adventures Club, he spearheaded community-wideorganic recycling and composting efforts. Mark is also a trainedEMT and has volunteered his time to train faculty and staff in CPR, first aid and AED use.

Thanks to Mark for his dedication to Benilde-St. Margaret’s for thepast 33 years. He set a wonderful example for his fellow teachers, students and co-workers.

Apple Polisher

In 1994, the National Honor Society created an award that recog-nizes a faculty or staff member from the Benilde-St. Margaret’scommunity who has been instrumental in the development andachievement of its students.

The Apple Polisher Award is a special honor that acknowledges an exceptional person who demonstrates outstanding service and dedication to students. The award is all the more meaningfulbecause its recipients are nominated and selected by the students themselves.

A 2005 alumna, Claire Shea was a very involved student at BSM.Campus Minister Mike Jeremiah believes Claire’s experiences as astudent give her a unique perspective and prepared her well for herrole as a religion teacher at her alma mater. Her students had won-derful things to say about her. “Her positive attitude makes anyclass period fun. I will miss her and her words of wisdom nextyear.” Another young student added, “I don’t think I’ve ever had ateacher influence me more. She has changed my life in many waysand makes me want to be a better person.” It was obvious frommany statements that Claire is passionate about teaching. She caresabout the individual student and challenges them to become theperson God is calling them to be.

Accepting the award, Claire joked that she wasn’t gone very longbefore she missed BSM and knew she wanted to come back. Thecurrent students are all very happy she did.

Sharon Bartels arrived at BSM 12 years ago almost by accident. However,it was no accident that she impacted the BSM community in so many positive ways since then. Sharon was involved in the lives of her students, cared about them, and worked with them to achieve at their highest level. She took an interest in their personal lives that went above and beyond thecall of duty. Sharon was at school (it was not work for her) early and she left late. She made a huge difference in the lives of so many students. BSM was fortunate to have Sharon as a math teacher and member of the community. She will definitely be missed.

Sharon Bartels retires

Parents’ Choice Award

The Parents’ Choice Award, a faculty and staff recognition program,is sponsored by the Parent Association. Each year BSM parents areencouraged to vote for a faculty or staff member who has left a posi-tive, lasting impression on their student. Is there someone who hasbeen a role model or mentor? What teacher has inspired a love oflearning for their student? Fall and spring conferences provide theopportunity to submit a ballot and parents are also able to vote online.

The Parent’s Choice Award winner for 2015 is also last year’s ApplePolisher Award winner, Matt McMerty-Brummer. Last year, the stu-dents appreciated Matt’s sense of humor and consistent willingness tohelp. This year, parents echoed their children’s sentiments while high-lighting Matt’s cheerful personality and inspirational teaching style.

According to one parent, “Mr. M.B. is a positive role model for students. He encourages active learning and provides opportunitiesfor his students to see their hard work and effort pay off.” Anothercompliments Matt for his ability to get kids excited to come to classand study and learn Spanish. Yet another parent is impressed withMatt’s ability to see the individual needs of his students and keepthem motivated during moments of struggle and doubt.

With BSM’s stellar faculty, it’s no small feat to be recognized twoyears in row. Kudos to Matt for this impressive accomplishment.

Members of the math department (past and present) gathered to celebrate withSharon Bartels as she began her retirement journey: back (l-r) Jim Picard, JoanieKopp Sauer ’88, Mary Seppala, and John Hamre; front (l-r) Dan Bowler,Sharon, Rosalie Goldberg, and Jean Hromatka Nightingale ‘80.

The Crown & Shield will be available in a digital format, beginning with the fall issue.

Consider receiving your issues via email rather than in print. The nature of the articles and the quality of the magazine will not change. It will have the added benefit of being a fiscally and environmentally responsible choice.

Dear Friends and Alumni,

For the 41st time in history, Benilde-St. Margaret’s celebrated our seniors at baccalaureateand graduation. The academic, athletic and community involvement the young men andwomen who leave our halls and continue their educational and personal growth at colleges and universities across the country have pursued over the last four years continues to astonish me. I am optimistic about the future of our country and Benilde-St. Margaret’s as our graduates take leadership roles and support causes they are passionate about—causes like making a private, Catholic high school education at BSM possible for any student who seeks it.

This passion—to make a Catholic education available to a student regardless of financialability, has been exemplified this year by a number of very generous families.

Over the past few months Benilde-St. Margaret’s has been blessed to have four families meet with me, hear about our need to commit to an incoming ninth grader who requires full tuition assistance, and agree to support the student for the next four years. This commitment amounts to $70,000 in financial aid next year and over $300,000 during the students’ careers at BSM.

The willingness of these families to make a four-year pledge is a win-win for the student and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

• Having these four-year commitments allow the students to know with certainty that they will be able to attend and graduate from BSM without the anxiety that their financial aid grant could be changed and place an unplanned hardship on their parents.

• For BSM it means that we will be able to, for the first time, enroll the most financially needy, most deserving students and provide 100% of the tuition assistance they qualify for under TADS and ensure they will have it for the next threeyears. This is different than our past tuition assistance guidelines in which we provided less aid, to more families. Now we are able to accomplish both goals—assist our most financially needy students and continue to assist 200 other students with partial aid.

Over the next couple of years, I will continue to meet with families, both old and new, and discuss the greatest need our community has—making it possible for any student, regardless of ability to pay, who is seeking a private, Catholic educationexperience, to achieve that experience at Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

If this four-year financial aid program resonates with you, and you would like to join our first four families in making a long-term commitment to our financially needy and well-deserving students, please let me know. I would enjoy visiting with you and helping you realize your philanthropic goals.

Again, thank you for your support this year and have a wonderful family-centered summer. I look forward to seeing our returning students and families in a couple of months. As for the 150 families leaving BSM for the last time, I hope our paths will cross again and you continue to believe that our mission is worth your charitable gifts.

Regards,

Advancement
