[ RELEASING THE HANDLE
Release the handle by pressing down onthe handle release pedal with your footand pulling back and down on the han-dle with your hand.
Note: The agitator does not rotate whenthe vacuum cleaner is in the upright posi-tion.

To start the vacuum cleaner, slide theOFF/FLOOR/CARPET switch from the OFFposition to the FLOOR or CARPETposition.,,,,_r
CAUTIONRefer to your carpet manufacturerscleaning recommendations. Some moredelicate carpets may require that theybe vacuumed with the agitator turnedoff, to prevent carpet damage.
To stop the vacuum cleaner_ slide theON/FLOOR/CARPET switch to the OFFposition.
CAUTIONDo not allow vacuum cleaner to remainin one spot for any length of time whenthe agitator is turning. Damage to car-pet may occur.
OFF - turns OFF/FLOOR/both suction CARPETand brushmotors off.

FLOOR - turnson the suctionmotor only. Inthis positionthe agitatordoes notrevolve. Use this setting for cleaninghardwood and tile floors and when anyattachments (tools) are used.
CARPET - turns on both the suction andthe brush motors.
Note: The agitator does not rotate whenthe vacuum cleaner is in the uprightposition.

PaLEHERGHT SELECTION 1
To select a pile height setting:
Turn off vacuum cleaner. Select a pileheight setting by tilting the vacuumcleaner back until front wheels are liftedslightly off the floor°
Slide the adjustment lever to the correctsetting.
There are four (4) pile height settings onthe vacuum cleaner. Use the LOW settingfor most low-pile carpets and bare floorcleaning (with agitator OFF), and theHIGH setting for high-pile carpets likeshag carpet, scatter rugs, etc. Use theother settings as needed for carpetheights in between.
CAUTION
Refer to your carpet manufacturerscleaning recommendations. Somemore delicate carpets may requirethat they be vacuumed with theagitator turned off, to prevent carpetdamage.

MOTOR PROTECTION SYSTEM
Thermal Protector - Suction MotorThis vacuum cleaner has a thermalprotector which automatically trips toprotect the vacuum cleaner suction motor.If a clog prevents the normal flow of airto the motor, the thermal protector turnsthe motor off automatically. This allowsthe motor to cool in order to preventpossible damage to the vacuum cleaner.
Thermal Protector - Agitator MotorThis vacuum cleaner has a thermalprotector which automatically trips toprotect the agitator motor. The thermalprotector turns the motor offautomatically. This allows the motor tocool in order to prevent possible damageto the vacuum cleanen
To reset thermal protector: Turn thevacuum cleaner off and unplug the powercord from the outlet to allow the vacuumcleaner to cool and the thermal protectorto reset.
CAUTIONAlways return the vaccum cleaner to theupright position before using the hoseand attachments. Failure to do so mayresult in overheating of the agitatormotor and can cause the thermal
protector to trip.
Check for and remove clogs, and replacebag if necessary. See CLOG REMOVALsection. Also check and replace anyclogged filters. Wait approximately 40-50 minutes before restarting vacuumcleaner.
Motor Protector
This vacuum cleaner has a motorprotector by-pass valve which preventsmotor overheating and damage. Thevalve opens to provide cooling air when aclog prevents normal air flow to thevacuum cleaner suction motor. You willnotice a change of sound as air rushesthrough the valve opening.

To correct problem empty the dust cupand clean the primary filter. If usingattachments, adjust to allow for greaterair flow.
NOTE: The motor protector may openwhen using attachments or when cleaningnew carpet due to reduced airflowcaused by the attachments themselves orby new carpet lint filling the dust cupquickly.

AGITATOR OVERLOADPROTECTOR
The agitator has built-in protectionagainst motor damage should theagitator jam. If the agitator slows downor stops, the agitator overload protectorshuts off the agitator motor. The vacuumcleaner suction motor will continue to run.

Disconnect electrical supply before per-forming maintenance to the vacuumcleaner. Failure to do so could result inelectrical shock or personal injury fromvacuum cleaner suddenly starting.
To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner, remove obstruction,then press AGITATOR RESET BUTTON.
If the problem persists, have thevacuum cleaner serviced by a Sears orother qualified technician.

CLEANING EXTERIOR AND ATTACHMENTS ]Unplug cord from wall outlet.
Clean exterior using a clean, soft cloththat has been dipped in a solution ofmild liquid detergent and water, thenwrung dry. DO NOT drip water on vacu-um cleaner. Wipe dry after cleaning.
To reduce static electricity and dustbuild-up, wipe outer surface of vacuumcleaner and attachments.
Wash attachments in warm soapy water,rinse and air dry. Do not clean in dish-washer.
CAUTIONDo not use attachments if they are wet.
Attachments used in dirty areas, suchas under a refrigerator, should not beused on other surfaces until they arewashed. They could leave marks.

Remove dust cup from vacuum cleaner(See DUST CUP EMPTYING) and emptycontents.
1. Rotate upper dustcup to unlock, thenlift off.
2. Remove pre-filter bypulling downward as shown.See PRE-FILTER CLEANING
3. Press the lidrelease buttondownward andtwist lid to removefrom dust cup.
4. Rotate fastener ringto unlock, and lift off.
5. Remove upperportion of dust cupfrom air guide.
6. Rinse with coldwater only, DO NOTuse detergent or soap.Allow parts to dry 24hours before puttingback into vacuumc lea ner.
DO NOT wash in thedishwasher.DO NOT install partsdamp.
TO ASSEMBLE DUST CUP
1. Reinstall upperportion of dust cuponto air guide sothat the lockingscrews passthrough theholes in theupper portion.
2. Using alignment markson the fastener ring anddust cup, place fastenerring onto dust cup androtate to lock in place.
3. Place the dust cuplid on the upperportion of the dust cupusing aligniment slots,and rotate until the lidlocks in place.
4. Reinstall pre-filterby using thealignment ribs on thepre-filter to align withthe ribs on the upperportion of the dustcup.
5. Press into place. Anoticeable "click"
should be heard.
6. Reinstall lower F_portion of the dust cupby aligning ribs on theupper portion with theUNLOCK ribs on the r_lower portion. L27. Rotate until ribsfrom the upper portion of the dust cupalign with the LOCK ribs.
NOTE: If lower portion of dust cup doesnot fit properly check pre-filterinstallation in step 4.

PRE-RLTER CLEANWNG 1
The pre-filter is located inside the dustcup. Check the pre-filter frequently andclean when dirty.
i. Remove the dust cup as outlined in theDUST CUP CLEANING section.
NOTE= Make sure dust cup is free ofdebris before opening.
2. Rotate dust cup lid assembly counter-clockwise as indicated on the lid and liftoff.

UNLOCKED(For Cleaning)
3. Clean pre-filterby gently tappingover a trashcontainer. Tap onseveral sides toensure bestcleaning.
If necessary, rinsewith cold wateronly, DO NOT usedetergent orsoap. Allow partsto dry 24 hoursbefore puttingback into vacuumcleaner.
DO NOT wash in the dishwasher.DO NOT install damp.
4. Replace the lower portion of the dustcup by aligning marks as shown,UNLOCKED (For Cleaning).
5. Rotate while pressing downward untilmarks align as shown; LOCKED (For Use).
6. Replace the dust cup.
