30th INTERNATIONAL HORTICULTURAL CONGRESS

12 - 16 AUGUST 2018 • ISTANBUL - TURKEY

Let us meet in Istanbul, save the date, 12-16 August 2018

Every four years, the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) convenes the major International Horticultural Congress (IHC) where the latest knowledge and leading-edge technologies within horticultural science worldwide are presented. XXXth International Horticultural Congress (IHC2018) will be held in Istanbul, Turkey between 12 and 16 August 2018. We will meet together in Istanbul for getting better in our own professional fields.

Istanbul is the only city bridging two continents, Asia with Europe, with proximity to Africa. The motto of IHC2018 is decided as ‘Bridging the World through Horticulture’ with the hope to bridge the whole world through horticulture.

IHC2018 will provide an excellent platform for scientists, technicians, students, consultants, engineers, extension agents, growers, industry, trade and consumer organizations, policy makers and professionals having a direct or indirect interest in horticulture. This five-day event will bring together more than 2 500 people from all over the world, to communicate their science, technology and management expertise, and hear the latest advances directly from the international experts in horticultural science and the wider plant science community. You will get the chance to meet and discuss directly with your colleagues and enlarge your network. Their research and discussion will be fundamental to identifying, informing and implementing international and national policies and protocols in the planning, conservation and sustainable uses of horticulture.

IHC2018 has a rich and innovative scientific program in different formats: Two colloquia aim to bridge industry with research and production and form a platform to share experiences to imagine the future. One colloquium entitled “Future technologies in horticulture” will link today and tomorrow in terms of technological innovation in horticulture. The second one, “Innovations: adoption as best practices”, will host distinguished keynote speakers who will discuss how innovations could be successfully adopted in practice and how to develop research strategies to achieve innovations and their implementations.

Symposia are the backbone of the IHC2018, and thirty-nine symposia, crop or discipline based, cover all aspects of horticultural science. They are structured with oral and poster presentations and keynote speeches and in some cases coupled by workshops, training sessions or panel discussions. Some of the symposia are the one in the row within a series that are held every four years.

Workshops will bring the burning and important issues onto the agendas of participants, and providing opportunities for further cooperation. A four-day workshop is being organized by young horticulturists to discuss their current role and future in the horticultural ecosystem.

Training sessions are organized on Good Agricultural Practices, Organic Agriculture and Scientific Writing. The East European and Central Asian summit will bridge the horticulturists from the east and west facilitating networking.

Technical tours, designed as pre- and post-Congress tours and daily tours for all the participants and accompanying persons will give the opportunity to learn about traditions and agri-practices in Turkey and visit places of interest. Tailor-made tours will be available for specific groups.

We try hard to prepare a stimulating and diverse scientific program supported by entertaining social programs enriched with technical tours and ensure a warm welcoming atmosphere with traditional Turkish hospitality during the Congress. You will surely get the opportunity for building beneficial relations within the horticultural ecosystem and industry.

You should not miss this Congress. Please save the dates for 12-16 August 2018 and join with us. You can find more information at our website (www.ihc2018.org) and still can submit an abstract.

Istanbul awaits you for IHC2018!

HOST COUNTRY, HOST CITY AND VENUE

TurkeyA country of in depth history and culture, the Turkish Republic is located where the three continents of the old world, Asia, Africa and Europe, are closest to each other and straddle the point where Europe and Asia meet. Because of this geographical location, the mainland Anatolia has witnessed the mass migration of diverse peoples, shaping the course of history. Home to countless civilizations, Anatolia has developed a unique synthesis of cultures, each with its own distinct identity, yet each linked to its predecessors through insoluble threads. As a modern nation in an ancient land, Turkey today is the inheritor and conservator of such an essential, shared heritage of humanity.

IstanbulIstanbul is a city of unparalleled social and cultural richness. It is as fascinating and historical as it is dynamic and modern. Serving as the capital of two mighty empires incessantly for sixteen centuries, Eastern Roman or Byzantine and Ottoman, and set squarely between two continents, Istanbul has cultures and traditions that blend East with West and Mediterranean with Anatolian. Each civilization that has made Istanbul its home has left its mark in sublime and splendid ways, and the result a city that gives one the feeling of universal history at every step. With a definitely multicultural touch and a vibrant atmosphere rooted deep in the past experience of humanity while facing toward the future, Istanbul is truly as much a crossroads of ideas and cultures today as ever. For how many cities in the world is home to ages old churches, mosques, and synagogues in such a close proximity, showing us the possibility of a community formed of different cultures living in a state of peace and tolerance that stems from a shared human past and belief in the future? In its south stretches the Marmara Sea and in its north is the Black Sea. Its western part is in Europe and eastern in Asia. The strategic and aesthetic strait that separates the two coasts of Istanbul together with the two continents is the Bosporus which is the first gate from the Black Sea to the Aegean and then onto Mediterranean. Being a port city and having many major trade paths pass through itself is what has given ultimate significance to the city for thousands of years.

VenueIstanbul Congress Center (ICC) is located in a central region, which is called by the name ‘Congress Valley’ in Harbiye, Taşkışla Street. Istanbul is situated in a location that international airlines may easily reach - Atatürk Airport in European Side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Anatolian Side. All commercial and cultural centers are all very close to Istanbul Congress Center. Local transport to ICC is easy with mass transportation vehicles such as metro, tram, bus and metrobus.

OUR LOGO THEME

The logo of IHC symbolizes two values of Istanbul: the bridge and tulip. Istanbul is the unique city in the World bridging two continents, Asia and Europe. The IHC 2018, the International Horticultural Congress hold in İstanbul wishes to bridge the whole World through horticulture. Tulip is the symbol of Istanbul and gave its name to an era during Ottomans and further distributed and commercialized in various parts of the World. We wish, IHC 2018 Istanbul, offers the beauty and elegance of the tulip to the world-wide horticultural community.

Transportation

Istanbul has always been a meeting place, a cross point and a destination. With the Ataturk Istanbul International Airport, getting to and from Istanbul has never been easier. With a capacity of far over 25 million travelers per year Istanbul is surprisingly within reach - in fact, it’s less than a three-hour flight from most European cities. Located at the crossroads of East and West, Istanbul offers easy air connections.

Recommended airport is the Atatürk International Airport. It is located on European side of the city and serves domestic and international scheduled and charter flights 24 hours a day. It is located 24 km west of the city centre. The Ataturk International Airport is served by more than 50 major airlines to hundreds of cities around the world. There are direct flights from over 130 international airports to Istanbul.

In addition to Ataturk International Airport, Istanbul has a second airport located on the Asian side of the city, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which is an important arrival point especially for charter and cargo flights and special events.

The city is reachable via ship from Italy, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries, and is in addition a major port of call for cruise lines and chartered yachts. Via land, several rail lines connect Turkey to neighboring countries as well as many bus lines which easily and affordably connect Istanbul to other cities across Turkey, Europe and the Middle East.

Highways represent another increasingly viable alternative to getting in and out of Istanbul.

Time Zone

Istanbul falls in the Eastern European Time Zone. Eastern European Standard Time (EET) is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2).

Currency

The Turkish Lira is the official currency of Turkey. Bank notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 TL. Coins come in the amounts of 1, 5, 10 and 25 Kuruş and 1 Lira .

ATMs

ATMs can be found all around the country. All of them offer foreign language options and pay out Turkish liras. Cash withdrawal limits vary from bank to bank and are around 800 TL to 1.500 TL.

Changing Money

Foreign exchange offices, which are known as “döviz bürosu” can be found throughout the country. Operating hours are mostly Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 17:00. In the arrivals section of Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen Airport, there are 24-hour exchange offices. Also the exchange offices located in shopping malls and touristic areas are open later and on Saturdays. US Dollars and Euros are accepted in highly touristic districts like Sultanahmet and Taksim but rates are often not competitive.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are widely used and accepted. Visitors can use their Visa and Mastercards but Amex and Diner’s are often not accepted.

Traveller’s Cheques

Traveller’s cheques can be changed at banks or post offices. Note that you’ll need to have a valid passport with you.

Dinning Out

Istanbul is a culinary delight no matter what your budget. From simple workers’ eateries and sidewalk cafes to posh culinary palaces with liveried waiters, Turkish cuisine is good and the value-for-money unbeatable. A typical Turkish dish generally consists of lamb, mutton, and veal with a variety of vegetables. Pilaf, all kinds of pastry, bulgur, haricot beans, rich olive oil, and vegetables are also common side dishes. Meatballs, shish kebab, and doner kebab are also classic dishes. Because of its coastal location, fish is also popular although it is usually cooked simply, such as grilled, or fried with olive oil and lemon juice. Istanbul is the commercial and cultural centre of Turkey; and there are restaurants of many nationalities such as Korean, Russian, Italian, and Chinese. American-style fast-food outlets are becoming more popular, but for a quick snack it is more appropriate to fill up at the plethora of tiny takeaways offering kebabs and snacks. It is easy to sample good quality regional cuisine in typical small restaurants, usually at low cost, especially in the commercial and business areas.

Electricity and Voltage

Turkey’s electrical system operates on 220 volts, 50 Hz, with round-prong European-style plugs that fit into recessed wall sockets. You will need a voltage converter, and plug adapter in order to use U.S. appliances. We recommend getting a universal adapter and converter kit.

Liability and Insurance

Registration fees do not include the insurance of participants against personal accidents, sickness and cancellations by any party, theft, loss or damage to personal possessions. Participants are advised to take out adequate personal insurance to cover travel, accommodation, cancellation and personal effects.

It is recommended to have a travel insurance policy with a full medical coverage before traveling. Note that in some cases, a Europe-only travel insurance policy does not cover you on the Asian side of İstanbul.

Shopping In Istanbul

Famed as the City of a Thousand Colours and Fragrances, Istanbul is a paradise for shoppers. A large variety of traditional carpets, jewels, gold, and leather goods can be purchased on the street in the tourist areas, or one can visit the city’s modern shopping malls where Turkish brand goods can be found. The shops are open from 8:00 to 21:00 from Monday to Saturday. The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar open their gates at 8:00 and close at 19:00. The large shopping malls open from 10:00 to 22:00 seven days a week. Shops do not close for lunch.

Almost all international airlines have convenient direct flights to Istanbul from all over the world. Turkish Airlines, which has been carrying passenger and cargo since 1933, has today a fleet of 131 aircrafts and flies to a total of 148 destinations, 36 domestic and 112 international. It has consolidated its international position by linking the Caucasian countries and the Turkish Republics in Central Asia, as well as the Middle Eastern and Asian countries with Europe, Africa and North America through the service network hub in Istanbul. Turkish Airlines is a member of Star Alliance.

EXHIBITION AND SPONSORSHIP

The International Horticultural Congress (IHC) is the biggest scientific event organized every four year since 1856 in the fields related to horticulture. The previous IHCs gathered around 2500-5000 participants from countries all-over the world. It is an excellent platform for scientists, technicians, students, consultants, engineers, extension agents, growers, industry, trade and consumer organizations, policy makers and other professionals having an interest in horticulture. Also it is a meeting point of science and industry and a chance bringing the scientific advances to the use of practice and bringing the problems faced in practice into the scope of research and innovation. Both sides could use the Congress as a platform for sharing their experiences and exchanging their knowledge and know-how for a more sustainable future.

IHC2018 is an ideal springboard for our industry partners to reach different actors of horticulture. As a sponsor, you will not only have the chance to broaden your reach, but also demonstrate your active role and commitment in horticultural science. This document provides detailed information on strategic opportunities to gain valuable interaction with your target audience, and at the same time, work together with us to achieve the breadth and depth of collaboration and scientific exchange.

An extensive exhibition will be mounted enabling delegates to review the latest products and service adding to the overall educational experience.
