Dear Gala Patron:

Welcome to Performance Network Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Gala! This is a significant milestone for the theatre and we are delighted that you are here to celebrate with us.

Our theme this evening, Home Grown–World Class, reflects the theatre’s growth from fledgling presenter in a small warehouse, to producer of award-winning work presented in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. It also celebrates the unique and wonderful businesses and organizations that make their homes here and help make our community a rich and vibrant place.

As well as being a great celebration, the Gala is an important fundraiser supporting our core mission, as well as our all-important apprentice program. This year, the live auction will include a dedicated giving segment where you can make a contribution to this intensive, year-long training program that provides invaluable, hands-on experience to those with undergraduate degrees. Our three apprentices do, quite literally, everything. Working 60 to 80 hours a week, they sell tickets, manage front-of-house, assist with marketing and development, assistant stage manage, build sets, clean, and do whatever else is needed. We would not be able to function without them, and we are asking for your support of this vital program that costs the theatre $45,000 annually.

We would also like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our sponsors and Ambassadors, and those who have supported the Gala, in particular the Gala Committee. They have spent countless hours planning and securing auction items, and have been an integral part of making this evening a success. We thank you, as well, for attending and helping support great, live theatre in our community.

Please bid high and bid often.

With warmest regards,

Carla Milarch Christina MooneyExecutive Director Director of Development

Our Angel of the Arts Honorees

c dMarina and Bob WhitmanThe couple first met at Harvard when, as Bob puts it, he was a “graying grad student” and she was a “dewy -eyed freshman.” In one wild week in 1956, she received her AB, he his PhD, and they were married at her family’s home overlooking Long Island Sound. Bob’s subsequent career was relatively straight line: 28 years as professor of English, specializing in dramatic literature, at the University of Pittsburgh, department chair, several books (mainly on G.B. Shaw), and retirement in 1988. In addition to acadame, Marina’s career has included government (as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors under Richard Nixon), and industry (Chief Economist and then Group Vice-president for Public Affairs at General Motors). Now she now teaches part-time at the Business School and the School of Public Policy at Michigan.

Marina and Bob have a life-long enthusiasm for music and theater, and have found in Ann Arbor a climate that welcomed involvement in both. Since arriving here in 1985, they have become engaged in our area’s vibrant cultural life, serving on boards such as the Michigan Theater and University Musical Society.

Bob’s low vision—in spite of sight-saving help from the Kellogg Eye Center—means he has largely given up writing, but Marina more than makes up for it. In addition to her lengthy list of books and articles in economics, she has recently completed The Martian’s Daughter, her

Angel of the Arts Awards have been presented by Performance Network over the years and are a special way to honor those who have helped support and sustain the organization’s mission to ”provide uncompromising artistic leadership in the region and produce works that engage, challenge and inspire audiences and artists.” We recognize tonight those who have demonstrated unflagging support for Performance Network, enriching and enlivening our community through through their dedication and involvement.

memoir to be published in the fall by the University of Michigan Press. Bob and Marina have been instrumental in bringing works to the PNT stage, including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, The Seafarer, The Piano Lesson and Ain’t Misbehavin’.

Marina and Bob hope you will join them in blessing the community of Ann Arbor for all the good things and people it has brought into their lives. High on that list is the Performance Network, which has shown them that you don’t have to live in New York to enjoy first-class theater!

Malcolm Tulip is a director, actor, playwright and teacher. At Performance Network he directed his original work The Day Everything Went Wrong, as well as Amadeus, Retreat From Moscow, The Threepenny Opera, Man of La Mancha, and Timothy Findlay’s Elizabeth Rex, among others, including The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival. He has written, produced and performed in eight original plays under the name of Prospero Theatre Co., including the award-winning Down the Plughole. Malcolm is an Associate

Professor, Head of the Directing Concentration and co-head of Interarts Performance in the Department of Theatre and Drama at the University of Michigan, where he directs and teaches Physical Theatre, Acting, Clown, Creating Original Theatre and Directing.

As an actor he has toured extensively in Europe and the USA. More recently, in the U.S. he has performed at Performance Network (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Amadeus, I Am My Own Wife, Copenhagen, The White Rose, Molly Sweeney), The Purple Rose (Blithe Spirit), the New Jersey and Michigan Shakespeare Festivals and at The Heritage Repertory Theatre in Charlottesville, VA, where he reprised his roles in I Am My Own Wife. Malcolm studied Dance and Art at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and is a graduate of L’École Jacques Lecoq, Paris. He is also a member of American Actors’ Equity.

L10. Support a PNT Apprentice If you’ve bought tickets, attended a play, or had just about any interaction with Performance Network, you’ve encountered one of our hard-working apprentices. They do everything--and we mean everything! Their job duties include selling tickets, building sets, managing front of house, assistant stage managing, marketing projects, mailing your season tickets, working on fundraising mailings, putting together food for opening night celebrations, and cleaning the theatre. And that’s just the beginning. They work an average of 60-80 hours a week--and we, quite literally, wouldn’t be able to run the theatre without them. This is an invaluable experience for them, providing intense, hands-on training in all areas of theatre. The cost for three apprentices is $45,000 annually. Tonight we are asking for your help to support this vitally important program. You’ll hear a brief presentation by Lindsey Ford, a recent apprentice “graduate.” Please, raise your bidder paddle to contribute.
