Foreword Thank you for choosing the Neets VGA Extender (Power via UTP) ‐ designed for transmission of VGA/XGA signals over a single Cat 5/6 cable.

About this Manual

This manual details the installation and operation of the:

• Neets VGA Extender video transmitter (Power via UTP) ‐ 1 Cat 5/6 output

• Neets VGA Extender video receiver 125 (Power via UTP) ‐ 125m

In this manual:

• The term »transmitter« refers specifically to the Neets VGA Extender video transmitter.

• The term »receiver« refers specifically to the Neets VGA Extender video receiver.

Features

• Up to 125 meters in one line without repeater • Adjustable Video Equalisation (compensates for loss of image quality due to cable length in four

steps with or without extra gain) • Local monitor out on the transmitter

Compatibility

The transmitter and the receiver have been tested with a wide variety of monitors and displays.

However, it is impossible to guarantee correct operation with every monitor currently on the market.

The Neets VGA Extender is compatible with the following equipment:

Monitor: VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA, UXGA Computers: All computers using a HD‐15 VGA output and standard VGA signals or RGB and two sync signals H/V

Introduction The connector wiring must meet the EIA/TIA 568 standard.

UTP / STP Connection Cable Wiring

The transmitter‐receiver interconnection cable is terminated in RJ45 connectors and should be wired according to the EIA/TIA 568 (Scheme B preferred) industry standard. The Neets VGA Extender will function with other wiring schemes, but the video quality may be impaired.

Orientation: Looking into the RJ45 socket pin 1 is on the left and Pin 8 on the right.

The Neets VGA Extender has been tested with all major manufactures of Cat 5/6 cable including BICC‐VERO, Mohawk, and Brand‐Rex with good results.

Failure to wires in twisted pairs will impair the video quality dramatically and / or prevent correct operation.

Page 5 Doc no#: 306‐0009‐002 REV200 Neets VGA Extender

The Neets VGA Extender is designed for use up to a maximum cable length of 125m/410ft. At this length the video quality should still be acceptable even at a screen resolution of 1200x1600 (75Hz).

Although a single continuous length of interconnect cable is preferable, operation is possible through multiple patch panels. However, the more patch panels the cable is routed through, the greater the chance of video signal degradation.

Begin installation from the computer and move forward. Connect transmitter to the VGA output of the computer Connect a monitor to the VGA out of the Neets VGA Extender – Transmitter Connect the power supply to the transmitter Turn on the PC Run a still test image on the PC Connect the Neets VGA Extender - receiver to the transmitter with a Cat 5/6 cable - the green LED lights up on the receiver Connect a monitor to the receiver Adjust the video quality on the receiver

Video quality

Several factors may influence the video quality:

• RFI from surrounding electrical fields • Cable quality • Connectors quality • Cable length

Equalisation

When transmitting VGA signals over Cat 5/6 cables, the high frequencies and the low frequencies will not be attenuated equally. Therefore the receiver contains a video equalisation circuitry that compensates for loss in image quality caused by signal loss in the Cat 5/6 cables.

To set the correct level of equalisation, adjust the equalizing for the best picture:

Cable length (m) Cable length (ft) Switch Position 0 – 35 m 0 – 115 ft 0 35 – 55 m 115 – 180 ft 1 55 – 75 m 180 – 245 ft 2 75 – 105 m 245 – 345 ft 3 75 – 125 m 245 – 410 ft 4 5 6 7 8 9

Doc no#: 306‐0009‐002 REV200 Neets VGA Extender Page 8

Please note that for all practical purposes cable equalisation cannot be exact ‐ the receiver image will seldom be quite as sharp as the original.

Skew

In Cat 5/6 cables there is normally a little difference in the length of the cable pairs. This causes that the three colours (red‐blue‐green) does not appear correctly on the monitor.

Launch a black text on white background and look for colour changes. If you have any colour shades on your picture install a Skew Delay Compensator between the receiver and the monitor.

Trouble shooting

Symptom Cause Solution Low resolution Equalization is incorrectly

set. Adjust the equalization

Bad quality Cat 5/6 cables of insufficient quality

Change the Cat 5/6 cables

Picture has a wrong colour

A connection in the cabling is wrong

Check connectors and patch cables

The picture blanks or flickers or is rolling

Ground loop via the Cat 5/6 cable

Electrical potential on the ground between the PC and the monitor must be aligned

A constant interference or vertical wobble on the screen

Interference from electrical sources

Make sure the Cat 5/6 cable is away from electrical noise (fluorescent lamps – variable speed electrical motors etc.)

A beat pattern on the picture

Interference Change the vertical refresh rates slightly, such as from 60Hz to 70Hz

RGB‐colours are displaced

Skew compensation is needed.

Purchase a skew compensator or install skew free cables

Black and white picture or no picture

Monitor ID is missing Setup monitor manually on the PC (DDC‐signal is not transmitted )

Characters has separated into overlapping red, green & blue pixels

The connections in the Cat 5/6 are not correct

• Check that the Cat 5/6 wiring is EIA 568 standard.

• Check patch panels for poor or incorrect connections
