Dan Hines convinces Eric MG never made one of these!

For ordinary people, daffodils pushing through the ground, the tweeting of birds and the wheezing as your allergies take hold are sure signs that winter is over. But for people who love cars and motorcycles there are other signs of spring.

1. For the first time in four months you can hear the rumble of your neighbor’s Boss 302

2. While out on your favorite back road in your Austin-Healey 3000 you had to dodge eight cyclists

3. You woke up this morning to the lovely sweet sounds of the municipal street sweeper cleaning your road of all that tiny gravel and sand left over from winter.

4. You were up all night Friday wondering if your Chevelle will start for the first time on Saturday morning, thinking, did I use enough Stabil or will I have to clean the carburetor again?

5. Despite having to cut the lawn, spread fertilizer and plant the tomatoes, you can’t wait to wash and wax the ’59 Eldo.

If you’re not thinking thoughts like these, it’s probably time for you to unplug the Volt or get someone to check the tire pressure in the Prius before checking that your compost temperature probe is properly positioned.

Pres. Eric’s MGB Transplant Update. Rover conversion Pt. 6 (CoPres. Eric’s Brake Bleeding homemade kit. By Eric Frana Looking for an easier way to bleed breaks (or hydraulic clutch)?

Periodically replacing a caliper or flexible hose at the wheel works well to have someone pump the breaks while another operates the bleeder valve.

What happens when you’re alone or you have more significant break work, like a complete restore and dry break system? Then what?

Local auto stores have a few options for you. There’s an inexpensive “one man bleeder kit” that costs around $5-10. They suck. Don’t waste your money.

I’ve utilized a hand powered vacuum pump with container to collect the fluid. Cost $20-75. My experience has determined there’s enough leakage in the bleeder valve threads and container that this option really does work all that well, if at all. There’s also an air powered vacuum bleeder kit. These can get rather expensive. On sale, the auto store had one for $110 and seen them online for upwards of $400+. OUCH!

Heard people talk about pushing fluid from the wheel to the master cylinder. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find anything that supports this option.

Frustrated, I tried to make something. Thought an aluminum water bottle would be a good candidate. It’s easy to add fluid and seals. Unfortunately, the aluminum water bottle melted when I went to solder (yes, they make an aluminum solder) a tube like a straw, so this didn’t work out that well.

What about using PVC pipe? Glue together, have threaded fittings and could adapt to a hose barb on one end and easy to unscrew for filling on the other. Drill a hole to place a the valve stem and it’s off.

During execution of this option, a couple things were adjusted. Auto store had a 1/8” NPT Schrader valve for a couple bucks.

James McKenzie thanks Eric’s effort.Eric did some needed updates on the club car trailer before he took off for Iowa to bring back the Hilman Husky. Before he left he made a new bracket for the electric winch, replaced a broken taillight, welded on some angle iron over the tailights so they won't get broken again, put some removable pins in for the bars that hold the tailgate. He welded on some big eyes for the rear of the trailer to make it easier to put the straps on the back that hold the car on.First class job and a big thanks for all the work to make the trailer safer and easier to use.

Eric’s Hillman Husky arrived!

It’s a matter of scale.

1955 Hillman Husky. My cousin purchased the car about 30-35 years ago for the whapping sum of $400. It was painted for $700 and engine rebuilt for $500 in the early to mid ‘80’s. Jamie in his early 20’s, interest was an IROC Camaro, so the car sat. One day a neighbor came by, removed the spark plug wires and ignition coil, so it was crippled.Sitting in the garage for many years, Aunt LaVonne had it moved outside; covered with a tarp several times, they gave up trying to protect it. Was then exposed to weather in the same spot for many more years. Needing a project, I stopped by a few times to take a look. Even took pictures nearly 10 years ago (which is ironic because I had just broken ground on building my new house). Didn’t want to purchase at that time and didn’t think it would be sold, didn’t ask.November 18, 2010 was the day I took delivery on my 2011 Focus. It was also the day Jamie passed. The Husky was a proud memory, absolutely figured his car would not be sold at any cost. In passing, Mom even asked Aunt LaVonne what she was going to do with the car. She confirmed it wasn’t going anywhere.Life moves forward for me. Move to Kansas, then become president of LABCC. You can actually blame the next step on the Cars 2 movie. Watched it about a year ago. Staged in Europe with a few staple British cars, it started to get my mind wanting to learn where Jamie’s car came from. Looked at the photos and searched it. Had no idea this car I knew since childhood was British! Just seemed to fit, so started planting bugs to in other family members begin working on Aunt LaVonne in selling it to me.Something worked. At another funeral late last summer, I saw Aunt LaVonne and slightly broached the subject. She was interested and quite happy in my inquiry. She agreed to sell it and I needed to work out the details with my cousin Frana, Jamie’s sister (That’s her first name. No, it’s not confusing to us, just non family members).Picked it up on April 23, so the next car project is in the works. Think James is starting to wear off on me. J Eric

1 Hour with Gary Emery’s 1961 Big Healey. By Bill Fisher! All body lines lead forward yet quickly flow past when viewing the Big Healey. Whether the 100-4 or the 3000-6, the car excells visually to form high speed in a sitting stance. Member Gary Emery’s 1961 is no exception. I arrived at his Kansas hide-a-way last week and had the time of my life riding/driving for over an hour. 75 Degrees, top down and a winding road close by helped enjoy the exprience.

He drove thru Lecompton, Perry and eventually circling through West Lawrence for non-alcohol fuel at the 66 station on 6th street. Then he gave me the wheel. Well, learning the angled shift pattern took a few attempts. Finally I was off with Gary hanging on for once as a passenger, and my opportunity to enjoy it.

What great low-end grunt, the unique exhaust bellow, and balanced curve-pulling dynamics. This is the best example of any 3000 I’ve driven. So glad Gary allowed me to drive it. The original “Zoom-Zoom!”

Gary & his wife Molly bought it 12 years ago. It is only one of 45 BN-7’s built with Left hand drive.Only updates from original are Pertronix ignition and 72 spoke Dayton wire wheels.

These photos don’t do justice to the color silver insert panel. When we drove through Lawrence out of town, various cars tried to follow to see what it was. More unique than a ’63 Jaguar XK-E, with different power.
