Hanna’s say thanks to communityThe organisers of a fundrais-ing drive for Ranui House in Christchurch are “elated” with the response.Last year Waimea Weekly told the story of Peter and Lynda Hanna. As Lynda fought a battle with cancer Peter stayed in Ranui House, an accommodation block near Christchurch hospi-tal, and quickly met a lot of other Nelsonians supporting their loved ones through a similar journey. When Peter and Lynda returned home Peter wanted to do what he could to help the house that had been a huge help for him. They organised a music concert, a golf fundraiser, a hangi and a quiz night, in to-tal raising $34,965.“We’re just elated with what’s happened,” says Peter. “To get the support we’ve had has been fantastic and that’s surprised me a bit.”The music concert fundrais-er held last November raised $9000. The hangi at the Wan-derers clubrooms in Janu-

ary raised $2100. The golf tournament in March raised $11,400 and the quiz night this month at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms raised $8560. The remaining $3855 came from outside dona-tions from people around the South Island.Peter says the trust behind Ranui House “just can’t be-lieve” how much they’ve raised. While praising the com-munity support, Lynda also thanked the Weekly for cov-ering each of the fundrais-ing events to help promote them. “Peter and I would like to thank you very much for your support, you have been really great to work with.”

go to Australia for the operation but the cost is $350,000, or India at a cost of $100,000. He says he’s determined to do anything to live so he can watch his kids grow up, including the youngest who is just nine years old, and the operation still gives him a six out of seven chance of living a happy and longer life. “It’s gut-wrenching. I want to be able to go to their 21st birthdays, weddings, watch them have children of their own. I want to take them camping and kick a soccer ball with them. But I can’t.”So he’s calling on Nelson. Mike was a labourer and keen ten-nis player before his condition forced him from his job and admits he knows nothing about raising money, let alone

$100,000. “I’m out of my depth here, I love my kids. I want to do the best thing by them and I want to live. But I need help.”He is hoping people may be able to come forward with ideas for fundraisers, or even donate some money into a bank ac-count he set up just last week. “I’m keen to hear from anyone. Someone men-tioned a charity dinner but I don’t know how to go about it.”If Mike – who has never smoked – can raise the money, he’ll fly to India where the hospital and doctors are world-class and have been vetted by his local doc-tors. The reason it’s cheaper is because there are simply more donors and the associ-ated costs are less. Mike says he’s done his research and the Indian hospital checks out.

He doesn’t have much time though and the stress and strain on the faces of his mother, wife and children are obvious. His wife Julie-Ann says it’s been difficult dealing with Mike’s health as he needs to be breathing through an oxygen ma-chine 16 hours a day. Mike isn’t giving up though and is plan-ning a fishing trip with his kids during the school holidays. “I want to cram as much in as possible and spend as much quality time as I can with my kids. I want to keep doing that over the next ten years though, not just the next few months,” he says If you’d like to donate to Mike’s opera-tion his bank account details are: 38-9006-0093683-03.If you’d like to get in touch with Mike about a fundraising idea, his email ad-dress is [email protected].

“Yes, I follow Rugby Union and Rugby League. I used to play Rugby Union.”

Winter Sports have started, which winter sports do you follow?

Colin Stuart, Richmond.

“Yeah Rugby, I used to play and I enjoy it and I enjoy the local team, Waimea Old Boys.”

Anneke Leathley, Richmond.

“No, I’m interested in sports, I just don’t follow any. I’ve got no kids that are involved in them so that’s probably why.”

Tracy Dawson, Richmond.

Nelson wineries are looking forward to another “stellar vin-tage” after finishing harvesting this month, but it was a close call with growers just missing the wet weather that ruined tonnes of grapes in Marlbor-ough.Chairman of the Nelson Winegrowers Association Richard Flatman, says the quality of this year’s grapes is exceptional after their vineyards experienced per-fect growing conditions throughout the season. But Richard, who is the viticul-turalist at Neudorf Vine-yards, concedes Nelson growers were lucky they were able to start harvest-ing early and beat the rain that inundated the country in April. “We had 247 mil-limetres of rain at Neudorf from April 8 to April 20 and that’s when we would normally be a week into picking. We were just lucky we had that wonderful Indian Summer and were about two weeks early.“It looks like it’s going to be a stellar vintage. We had ripe fruit with nice flavours and no disease, and quite a large crop.”Waimea Estates general man-ager Ben Bolitho says they

faced a race against time to keep up with ripening grapes, harvesting and processing around the clock in the final 10 days. Ben says Waimea Estates

was also fortunate they had installed some new processing and refrigeration equipment for this season because that al-lowed them to finish the har-vest before the rain.“Our biggest day this season was 225 tonnes and before that it had been 150 tonnes, so we

would have struggled to beat the rain without the new gear. “Everything we picked was ripe and ready for harvest. I’m re-ally happy with the pinot noir and pinot gris - I think they will be exceptional.”Ben says Waimea Estates har-vested 2400 tonnes, up from

last season’s 1700 tonne and similar to the quantity har-vested in 2011.However, Richard says Marlborough “got really slammed” by the rain be-cause they had experienced cooler weather and were harvesting later than Nel-son. The prolonged rain caused grapes to swell, lose flavour and intensity and then split making them prone to disease and rot-ting. Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says the rain hit the later part of the vintage al-though it was “too early to say” how that impacted on

the harvest. He says there have been “a few distressing tales of some growers”, especially in the later ripening region’s of Marl-borough. However, Marcus says growers and winemakers are still optimistic about the vintage because of the quality of grapes already harvested.

Tim Babbage has only just finished adjusting the prices on his Mission speakers, now he’s going to have to do it all over again.A special trade in offer is in place for all Mission speakers in the MX range, this just a month after they dropped 20 percent in price due to New Zealand’s high dollar. Here’s the deal: bring in any set of old speakers and you’ll get $100 off the smaller speakers or $200 off the bigger ones.Mission’s speakers in the MX series come in book shelf size to big floor stand speakers, ranging in price from $499 to $1800. Tim says Mission is a UK company that’s been making speakers for years and they have built up a reputation for producing great quality speakers.“They’re very good, very traditional but with great sound. They’re a good quality brand, really good sounding speaker and they win a lot of awards for the series.”

To say that MX series has been well received by the critics is somewhat of an understatement. In fact every single model in the range has been awarded at least 5 stars or a group test win by the

industry’s most critical reviewers. Mission built its reputation in the 80’s for delivering highest quality speakers at reasonable prices, and MX very much delivers to the same ethos more than 30 years later. Each speaker in the range has been voiced to sound best when placed near a rear wall, allowing the customer to enjoy the best possible sound quality without sacrificing floor space in his or her living room.

This really does make MX easy to live with in a normal home environment. For more information visit Tim and his team at Begg’s Musicworks on Hardy St Nelson.

Anzac Day continues to increase in popularity around the Tasman district with large numbers of people attending memorial services at Richmond, Wakefield, Brightwater and Tapawera.Wakefield led the way with around 400 people, or one fifth of its population, jamming into the town hall before marching down to the cenotaph to lay wreaths in honour of the district’s fallen soldiers. But sadly, the number of returned servicemen and women attending the Wakefield ceremony is declining, with one of the town’s last World

War II veterans, Ira McPherson, absent for the first time in decades because of illness.“We had two or three World War II veterans in Wakefield up until recently and now Ira is the last of them,” RSA member Peter Eden says. “It’s really sad that he isn’t here.”Wakefield’s Ian Hutchings, who served in Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam, agreed the ceremony wasn’t the same with-out Ira. “He’s a village identity so it’s a shame he couldn’t be here. But it’s good to see ANZAC Day getting bigger every year.”

It was also a sad day for Wakefield’s oldest resident, 96-year-old Kathleen Jones, who has been attending the Wakefield ceremony with her daugh-ter Val Collie for years. Kathleen’s younger brother Charlie, was just 21 when he was killed in a tank at Casino in World War II. “Mum’s older broth-er Pat was also in Casino and walked

right past the tank just after it had been blown up,” Val says. “He didn’t find out until later that Charlie had been killed in that tank.”Guest speaker Colonel Bernard Isherwood of Stoke, paid tribute to all “the young men, some older and more than a few just boys” who fought and died at Gallipoli, includ-ing Wakefield’s Paul Ricketts. Bernard said the true spirit of ANZAC Day lay in small communities like Wakefield where it served as a “commemoration of the effect of war on our country”.In Richmond, about 700 people attended the service in the Memorial Gardens following a parade down Queen Street. Richmond-Waimea RSA president Terry Richard-son says they were delighted to have Blair Gerritsen as a guest speaker because he is from the Waimea district. Now a commander in the Royal New Zealand Navy, Blair attended Ranzau School and Waimea College before join-ing the navy in 1988. Terry says the services at Brightwa-ter and Tapawera were also popular this year.

Shopping in the Richmond Mall has been a win-win situation for parents and their young chil-dren this week, with the parents dropping their kids off at the Eventful Kids activity centre while they go shopping.Children aged three to 12 have been enjoying a number of creative activities at the centre, in-cluding colouring-in, Lego, puzzles and dress-up, while their parents and caregivers get a chance to participate in some kids-free shopping. The ser-vice is free courtesy of the Richmond Mall and playcentre’s supervisor Alana Caunter says they have been busy since opening up on Monday.“We had one mother who said she couldn’t get her kids to leave,” Alana says. “There’s so much

for them to do and they have so much fun.”Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says they con-tracted Eventful Kids to run their mobile activity centre because they wanted to try something dif-ferent these school holidays. “This is the first time we have tried this and we have got a lot of positive feedback,” Belinda says. “We usually put on some holiday activities for the children and we thought this one would be so good for the parents as well.” Eventful Kids is open from 11am to 3pm each day this week. It can take up to 20 children at once and looks after children for up to one hour. The bad news for parents is that the service is only for the last week on the holidays.

NEWSin briefDIESEL SPILL: Several “small accidents” were caused by a large diesel spill on State Highway 6 between Richmond and Mur-chison on Monday. Contractors were called in to deal with the spill and sergeant Blair Hall says police had “several minor crashes reported” before it was cleaned up.

The man was flown from Murchison to Hutt Hospital’s burns unit after the accident which oc-curred at around 3.30am. The manager told the Waimea Weekly that the man was a member of a canoe club that had been partying at the camping ground. Rescue helicopter crewman Paul Bryant reported that the man had burns to his arms, legs and upper body. The man has been dis-charged from Hutt Hospital.

Richmond shoppers enjoyed a blast from the past when Stephanie Buck and Adele Terrill put on a lunchtime performance of war-time golden oldies, as a lead-in to last Friday’s ANZAC Day commemorations.Stephanie had earlier ap-proached her neighbour and Richmond-Waimea RSA president, Terry Richardson, about putting on the perfor-mance to help raise funds for the RSA. The concert was a big hit with Stephanie playing the Richmond street piano and Adele, dressed-up as famous wartime singer Vera Lynn, providing the vocals.Adele, who only usually sings “in the shower and at the Annesbrook Church” says she enjoyed perform-ing for the lunchtime crowd on Queen St. She says it was also fun dressing-up as the forces sweetheart, although she admits that “embarrass-ingly” her Vera Lynn outfit “just came out of my ward-robe”.Stephanie, who was the key player in organising a street piano for Richmond, says it was nice to use the piano to help raise funds for the RSA.

The Tasman Great Taste Trail will be a hot topic at this Friday’s annual plan hearings in Rich-mond, with the Tasman District Council receiv-ing 80 submissions objecting to their proposal to cut $600,000 spending from the cycle trail’s budget next year.Council is holding public hearings around the district on its 2014-2015 draft annual plan and many of the people who made written submis-sions will be speaking to councillors about their concerns. Council received 553 submissions on 1039 topics, including 127 from people con-cerned that the $4 million community facility in Golden Bay has been removed from the plan. However, the Richmond hearing is likely to be dominated by supporters of the cycle trail, who are concerned that the next stage of the trail from Wakefield to Spooner’s Tunnel has been deferred until further funding can be been se-cured. Focus Wakefield spokesperson Emma Marshall stated in her submission that “$600,000 is a small amount to pay in order to secure the huge flow-on benefits completion of this part of the trail will bring.” She pointed out that “the nov-elty and adventure factor of the Tasman Great Taste Trail going through the Spooner’s Tunnel is a huge drawcard for the whole trail.”A number of submitters, including Kohatu’s Roger Bowman, were concerned that the alter-native route to the Wakefield-Spooner’s Tunnel section through Pigeon Valley was too danger-ous for cyclists. Wakefield’s Doug Chapman stated that the funding cut was “short-sighted” and completing the cycle trail “would be a wel-come boost” to Wakefield, Belgrove, Kohatu, Tapawera and Ngatimoti. Manager of Nelson Cycle Hire, Anita Gardner, stated in her submission that “over the last sum-mer, since the (coastal section) of the trail has been completed, my own company’s revenue has tripled. If a small economic benefit can be achieved for other parts of our community then surely it is a compelling reason for the council to set aside funding in 2014-2015 for a speedy completion of the trail.” Richmond’s David and Joan Whittle’s submis-sion pointed out that “completing the trail will strengthen the region’s attraction as a tourist destination and support the healthy lifestyle choices for Tasman residents.”The Richmond hearing will be held in the coun-cil chambers from 9.30am.

News8 WEDNESDAY 30 April 2014

At midnight on 8 April the world didn’t end, and nor did computers explode. Instead users starting getting the message below as Micro-soft pushed out its last wave of Windows Up-dates.In real terms users are now at a much higher risk of getting their computers infected by viruses, and also secure on-line services will cease to continue (such as some internet ser-vices and some e-mail services). If you are looking to upgrade or replace an XP computer, you have a choice between Win-dows 7 and Windows 8.1. Windows 7 is the easiest to get used to after Windows XP, and

is best suited for non-touch devices. Whereas Window 8.1 is designed for touch devices such as tablets and phones. We have a full range of PC’s, Laptops and Tab-lets running both systems. In other Microsoft related news, beware of those people who phone claiming to be from Microsoft. It is estimated that one in three New Zealander’s have had a call from them in the last year. They commonly say that you have a virus on your computer and want to log into your computer to check. This is never going to happen in reality, so please feel free to use whatever method you wish to dissuade them!

Duck shooters around the Nelson-Tas-man region have a “pretty good safety record” and Nelson-Marlborough Fish and Game’s Neil Deans wants it to stay that way when the season opens this Saturday.Fish and Game expects to issue around 30,000 duck shooting licences nation-wide this season and, with much of the shooting condensed into opening week-end, the chances of a firearms’ accident are increased. But Neil says opening weekend can be accident-free as long as duck shooters take care and follow a few basic safety rules.“Crossing fences with loaded guns is one of the biggest cause of accidents and it’s also important to make sure you can see what you are shooting at. And, of course, remember that alcohol and firearms don’t mix.”Although Neil says duck shooting isn’t as potentially dangerous as other forms of hunting, because shotguns have a limited range and hunters usu-ally aimed up in the air, hunters still need to be careful. Duck hunters who are jump-shooting needed to take extra care because they stalk up to ponds and fire at a lower trajectory. Neil says duck hunters should have plenty to shoot at with the ducks re-turning to the region after a dry Febru-ary and March. Hunters who had fed ponds to attract ducks should have a good opening, he says.

“The breeding season wasn’t too bad, but then we had that long Indian Sum-mer and I was beginning to wonder if we’d even have enough water for the ducks and now we have too much.”Stirling Sports Richmond owner Dave Heyward says they have been busy this week selling licences, decoys and am-munition, to duck hunters.“I think we have sold more licences this year and there’s always a bit of a rush in the last 10 days before the season opens. There seems to be quite a few ducks around so everyone’s hoping for a good opening.” Neil says Fish and Game rangers will be out in force on opening weekend,

checking that hunters had licences and were using the right ammunition. “We have a big team of honorary rang-ers and it will be quite a big operation. But we usually have a very high rate of compliance and don’t have too many problems.”Neil was also keen to avoid any conflict between hunters and cyclists on the section of the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail that runs alongside the Waimea Estuary, between the Ravensdown ferti-liser works and Lansdowne Road. That section will be closed to cyclists, before 10am and after 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, because hunters will be shoot-ing nearby.

A group of Nelsonians have crawled, climbed and sweated their way to glory at the Tough Mudder race in Auckland over the weekend.Twenty-two people from the Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Course Racing Club competed in the 20 kilometre obstacle course, and founder Sharon Martin says it was a huge weekend. “It was very long, it took us three and a half hours so that took a toll. But the camaraderie from the team definitely makes it easier, you know what everyone is good at and what their weaknesses are.”With seventeen obstacles in to-tal, ranging from the “Electric Eel”, where participants crawled through muddy trenches with elec-tric wires hanging from overhead,

to “Walk the Plank”, a leap from 20 metres high into cold muddy water, the course is not for the faint heart-ed, says Sharon. “We finished the course in just under four hours, but for us it was never about the time.It was about starting as a group and finishing as a group, we’re all feel-ing pretty pleased with our result”.The sport of obstacle racing, popu-lar in the USA, Europe and Aus-tralia, has begun to grow a dedi-cated following throughout New Zealand. Sharon says the group are planning to attend more events like the Tough Mudder and welcome anyone to come along and join in the fun.If you want to join call Sharon on 027 693 4618 or join the group’s Fa-cebook page.

Flooding in Richmond:I have made submissions on the flooding issue to the Engineering

Services Committee Public Forum 9th April, and the TDC pre-submission ques-tion and answers session Wednesday 16th April. The event of flooding and its resulting traumas for so many people, is the single most important and biggest item that the Tasman District Council faces in this year’s round of AP Public Submissions and con-siderations.For far too long, very little has been done to address the problems, development has occurred at an alarming rate, very much to the detriment of our residents.Rates have doubled over the last 10 years, the list goes on. I invite residents who have been affected to come along to the TDC Annual Plan Sub-mission meeting, 11am, May 2, 2014.Malcolm Saunders.

Cycle trail:Thank you for your recent reasoned article outlining four reasons the

Tasman District Council should review their decision to cut $600,000 from the Tasman Great Taste budget.Having recently cycled the Otago Rail Trail we were mightily impressed by the number of business opportunities this has created in the area. Just the one company that organised our trip had over 400 cy-

clists booked for the Easter break and we heard that figure in early March. Entries made in the “ Comments” book at the vari-ous places we stayed confirmed that most visitors were from the Auckland area, Aus-tralia or Europe. Obviously these are the visitors we want to attract. People who will spend their money supporting local busi-nesses and leave a very small environmen-tal footprint, as opposed to the packaged bus tourists so evident in the Queenstown area. Our Great Taste Trail offers such scenic variety and with our more temperate year round climate it will attract much needed visitors in our quieter cooler months. It will be relatively easy to promote, not as an alternative to the Rail Trail, but as a another exciting cycling experience not to be missed, or perhaps as one of a series of trails that can be enjoyed by an overseas visitor wanting a safe off-road cycling holi-day. We are surprised local hospitality and retail businesses are not making their voice heard more in the media. It will take pres-sure from all sections of our community, not just cyclists, to convince our council that a completed Great Taste Trail would rival the Abel Tasman in terms of econom-ic benefit to the Tasman area. Perhaps we should be looking at some form of volun-tary user-pays donation added to bike hire, ferry journey etc and/or a small toll on the rail tunnel would be acceptable to most us-ers. Does the council need to look at alter-

native forms of funding such as low inter-est debentures? We are confident it will be completed at some time in the future, but any undue delay is not only costing us in terms of missed economic opportunities, but also sees Nelson fall behind in the race for the tourist dollar as other regions com-plete their cycle trails and watch cyclists pedal past, smiling in an-ticipation of their next coffee.Yours faithfully, Tom and Yvonne Closey, Wakefield.

Murchison market:The inaugural Murchison

Community Car Boot Sale went ahead today, Sunday. In spite of heavy rain predicted the sun came out and stayed nearly un-til the end. There were plenty of punters buying and selling - scheduled for the last Sunday of every month makes this another reason to come visit Murchison. Sue Wilson.

Dramatix success:Thanks for the awesome

article last week – we got LOTS of feedback from people about it. Our night tours over the weekend went really well – everyone was totally amazed at what they saw. Barbara Seymour, Dramatix The-atre Development Trust.

We went along to the Anzac Experi-ence at Founders Park and loved it.

What an amazing job they do to put it on. (Via text).

Are you planning on doing some alterations to your home? You may be doing minor alterations to your kitchen, like a new bench top or replacing the existing kitchen cabinets with new ones. You may not be changing the plumbing but you are going to replace your electric cook top with a lovely new gas cooker. Where will the gas bottle live and are there rules around the installation of gas cookers? The answer is Yes, you will have to comply with the rules.

It is no longer legal to install a small gas bottle under the kitchen bench and close to electrical wiring. Your gas bottle will have to be vented and outside but not close to an opening window.

Getting men on the dance floor is proving to be a bit of a challenge for a local social dancing group.Quick-stepping dancers from the Nelson Social Dancing Club are looking for new members, but in particular men, to join the club to boost num-bers of their already popular dances. The group get together once a month in Stoke to boogie to a live band and share a pot luck sup-per, and club secretary Tina Simpson says they’re keen for more people to come along.

The club covers a broad range of dances from ballroom, including the waltz, foxtrot and quick-step, through to rock’n’roll and latin.Everyone is welcome to join the Nelson Social Dancing Club, especially any men hidden out there who are eager to give it a go. If you are interested in joining or learning more about the club, you can contact the dancing club’s secretary, Tina Simpson, on 544 2324 or 021 177 4943.

Social dancers wantedJesus Christ has had more impact for good on humankind than any other person. The following has been adapted over the years from a poem by Dr James Allan Francis. A Solitary life: Nearly two thou-sand years ago in an obscure vil-lage, a child was born of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village where He worked as a car-penter until he was thirty. Then for three years He be-came an itinerant preacher. This man never went to college or seminary. He never wrote a book. He never held a public office. He never had a family nor owned a home. He never put His foot inside a big city nor travelled even 200 miles from His birthplace. And though he never did any of the things that usually accompany greatness, throngs of people fol-lowed Him. He had no credentials but Himself. While He was still young, the tide of public opinion turned against Him. His followers ran away. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was sentenced to death on a cross between two thieves. While He was dying, His execu-tioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth--the simple coat He had worn. His body was laid in a borrowed grave pro-vided by a compassionate friend. But three days later this Man arose

from the dead--living proof that He was, as He had claimed, the Saviour whom God had sent, the Incarnate Son of God. Nineteen centuries have come and gone and today the risen Lord Jesus Christ is the central figure of the human race. On our calendars His birth divides history into two eras. One day of every week is set aside

in remembrance of Him. And our two most impor-tant holidays celebrate His birth and resurrection. On church steeples around the world His cross has become the symbol of victory over sin and death. This one man’s life has fur-nished the theme for more songs, books, poems and paintings than any other

person or event in history. Thou-sands of colleges, hospitals, or-phanages and other institutions have been founded in honour of this one who gave His life for us. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the governments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, have not changed the course of history as much as this one solitary life. Over the centuries, millions have found a new life of forgiveness from sins and peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ. To-day, He offers this life to all who will believe in Him. Why not go to a local church to find out more about Jesus Christ?

Just a thought...

Presbyteri-an Church.

Last week, Nelson Bays staff police caught up with some young men we believe to be responsible for a string of burglaries in our area.We caught up with the suspects after a series of incidents in which they failed to stop for police and endangered their own, and inno-cent members of the public’s, lives by fleeing.Whenever a fleeing driver’s behaviour is considered to be a risk to the general pub-lic, police will use a range of tactics, other than just chasing a fleeing driver, to stop the vehicle. Most often this will include laying road spikes which, as was the case in this inci-dent, are very effective in slowing a vehicle in a safe manner. The spikes slowly deflate the vehicles tyres, which ensures the driver doesn’t suddenly lose control, and they will generally either give up the fight, or try to dump the vehicle and run.I cannot overstate what an irresponsible risk any fleeing driver is taking! What is really satisfying about this work is that firstly, no one was injured in the ap-prehension of these suspects and, secondly, over recent days we have been able to reu-nite people with thousands of dollars worth of stolen property. While it is not for me to comment on the potential punishment the courts hand out, what I do know is that, if convicted, they won’t be at liberty to continue offending. Finally, I’d just like to remind people to take a look at the Snap website (snap.org.nz) where you can store an online asset list. This is really useful for the recovery of sto-len property should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being the victim of a burglary. Snap is a NZ Police initiative andthe service is free.

THE WORLD COMES TO NELSON: Cruise ship “The World” graced Nelson Haven over the weekend. Hun-dreds of locals went down to Wakefield Quay to check out the massive ship, and its overnight stay allowed its passengers to spend some time in the region. The ship is like a floating town, with six restaurants, grocery store, gym, golf simulator and put-ting greens, tennis court, jog-ging track, spa, swimming pool and cocktail lounge. The World was first launched in 2002. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Manor Property Services is a locally owned and operated company provid-ing professional cleaning and property maintenance services, commercial and domestic painting and decorating, scaf-folding hire and installa-tion, carpentry and car valet grooming services to the Nelson region. They are essentially your one stop shop for all mainte-nance and cleaning servic-es which is what sets them apart. Manor Property Services recently relocated to their new premises at 6-8 Vanguard St in order to provide a central point to operate from. With 10 vans on the road it offered all the sections within MPS a base to be together and the opportunity to store everything meaning a more efficient operation. It’s a long way from the heady days of the hus-tle and bustle of Auckland where Mark Forbes had a high pressure IT business on Auckland’s North Shore. After return-ing to his hometown of Nelson he teamed up with Andy Dunville and started MPS which has grown in size from a general property maintenance company through the addition of new divisions within the business and a team that now totals about 20 people. The dedication to hard work from both directors and their team has delivered a professional range of services with a reputation for getting it right first time. From window clean-ing to lawn mowing and garden care, Manor Property Services now offer their customers a comprehensive range of skills and trades, in-cluding painters and decorators, carpen-ters and a fully quali-fied arborist. Although property maintenance is still the core of MPS, they now incorporate a dependable, re-liable and professional cleaning division of about six staff who are primarily in-volved in hospitality such as bars, restau-

rants and cafes. However, they do offer their services for domestic, office, retail and rental spaces. Their services include window cleaning, carpet cleaning, water blasting and building clean and rubbish removal and are designed to help keep

Nelson businesses presentable, hygienic and tidy. The general maintenance of properties covers everything from gutter clears, window cleaning, painting, deck and re-taining wall construction, roof washes, treatments for moss, mould and lichen build up and water blasting walls and driveways. The Manor Property Servic-es advantage is that they are a specialist property maintenance company that of-

fers a wide range of general maintenance services so that you can get everything you need with one phone call, one com-pany and one invoice.

Manor Property Services have a team of professional painters who have many years experience in home and commer-cial painting, covering a wide range of in-dustries and operating across multi-site projects throughout the Nelson Tasman

region. Their painters are qualified in providing interior and exterior painting for both commercial and domestic, roof painting and spraying, home renovation projects, water proofing and graffiti re-moval. MPS also offer customers a car valet grooming service for a professional finish to car showroom standard. Pick up and drop off is available for car owners in the Nelson region or if you are going away

then it could be the perfect opportunity to treat your car to a high quality groom. MPS offer various levels of cleaning from the comprehensive full three hour groom

which includes a steam clean, engine bay clean, inside vacuum throughout and wax and polish to a simple wash and vac-uum. “If someone was going away for a few days and left their car at the airport then we could pick the car up and give it

a full groom to show-room standards,” says Mark Forbes. “We have relationships with local automotive agents and could get it serviced and return it to them perfectly clean and warranted.” MPS also have business relationships with local plumbers and electri-cians and are able to organise and facilitate any job that may need doing around your property. Their dedica-tion to providing cus-tomers with the one stop shop experience is what makes them an attractive proposition

for anyone with a business or property. MPS work with many local landlords and rental agencies to fix anything from the simplest problem of a leaky gutter or a rotten deck. It’s also an advantage for real estate agents who are preparing houses for sale. Many people who have houses on the market may struggle with present-ing their home to the highest standards and MPS are able to make the property more attractive to potential buyers so that

homeowners can get the most out of their asset. MPS are now in their fourth year of business and are building up a good reputation around town. They have a lot of experience in all the trades they offer and are certified to do many of the jobs other business-es can’t. The next time you need help with any-thing to do with prop-erty maintenance and cleaning give Manor Property Services a call

and feel assured you are getting every-thing you need in one. Call them today for a free quote on 0800 677 005.

In 2005 NZ Solar set out to provide the best possible value solar systems to Nelsonians, with an appreciation of the costs of electricity to the every-day person. Now with a range of solar water heating units and photovoltaic systems available for new or older homes, NZ Solar are the one stop shop for your solar system needs. As the price of electricity required for a growing household has risen NZ Solar have grown alongside the need for an affordable alternative and have met the demand for solar power both locally and nationwide with 12 franchises around New Zea-land. Advancements in technology

have made Photovoltaic systems even more efficient and affordable and with power bills set to rise solar energy has never been more benefi-cial. Talk to Chris Inglis at NZ Solar about setting up a Photovoltaic “on grid” system for your home, where the cost of your power bill can be reduced or even eliminated, with excess energy feeding back onto the national grid, crediting your electricity account. These “on grid” systems keep gen-erating power even while you are at work or away on holiday, so you con-tinue to save money on your power bill, no matter where you are.

Coast to Coast Helicopters owners Alister and Sa-rah have had a long association with aviation, both learning to fly in their teens and completing com-mercial licenses, Sarah in fixed wing and Alister as a helicopter pilot. Coast to Coast remains firmly based in the Tasman area with a new satellite base in Marlborough that operates a MD 520 Notar, en-hancing their Motueka based fleet. The new MD 520 can do anything that the existing aircraft can do, but with a 500kg lifting capacity it’s the perfect solu-tion for transportation of heavy and bulky loads to out of the way areas. Alister and Sarah have kept on existing Coast to Coast team members Willie and Tony who specialise in agricultural work, including crop spraying, forestry work, firefighting and frost protection. Using a helicopter for agricultural work is highly efficient, takes considerably less time and means you won’t need to utilise as much manpower - ultimately resulting in savings in wages, machinery costs and overheads.

Stihl Shop Richmond are specialists in Outdoor Power Equipment. Ian Topp has enjoyed having a few chooks around for many years. When his locally produced food supply ceased, Ian tried another cheaper option and to his dismay, they stopped laying. This confirmed his belief that to have happy, healthy chickens you need to feed them a top quality product to keep egg production up. Murray Gibson is a well recognised and respected supplier of point of lay pullets to the Top of the South region, and when he suggested that Ian try his Alcala Poultry Feeds he gave it a go. Lo and behold – the chooks started laying again! Ian was so impressed with the product he became Murray’s local agent and sells Alcala Stock Feeds from his Brightwater property.

Nelson’s top international adventure racers made light work of the inaugural Absolute Wilderness Adventure Race based in Murchison charg-ing through the 100 kilometre course including a steep ascent of the Mole Tops in just under eight hours.Sophie Hart, Nick Ross and Brent Edwards won the three-person teams race which in-cluded a rafting stage down the Buller River, two moun-tainbike stages and a rugged 20 kilometre alpine trek, in seven hours and 56 minutes. Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Dan Moore finished second in eight hours 46 minutes just edging out Josh Findlay, Ingrid Rich-ter and Trevor Voyce by one minute after a sprint finish.Even race organiser and world champion adventure racer Na-than Fa’avae was impressed with the fastest teams after ear-lier predicting a winning time of around 11 hours. He joked that the winning team’s name, Not Normal, was apt after they completed a super fast trek to make a winning break on the chasers. “I was bit surprised at how fast they went but they had perfect

conditions. It also helped that there were three very strong teams pushing hard at the front end of the race,” Na-than said. The quality of the women rac-ers in the top three teams was underlined by the fact that their times were all faster than Chris Burr, Tim Peterson and Tim Pearson who won the men’s race in in 9 hours 41 minutes. Sophie’s speed on the trek was especially impressive and even her team-mate and partner Nick admitted he was “worried about keeping up with these guys”. The six-hour men’s adventure race was won by Woodies, Nigel Kelly, Malcolm Edridge

and Brad Wallace, who made an impressive adventure racing debut completing the course in 4 hours 46 minutes. Ben Mou-lan, Meg Bichard and Ed Kerly won the mixed adventure race in 5 hours 8 minutes while Waimea College students Na-than Sturrock, Jackson Carver and Lachlan Brownlie won the youth section in a fast 4 hours 50 minutes.Sixty-five teams competed in the race and Nathan says that has encouraged the organisers to make the Absolute Wilder-ness a regular event. He says next year’s race will again be held in Murchison which is a perfect place for ad-venture racing.

Richmond Athletic’s most famous player Jeremy Brockie will be pass-ing on some of his footballing wis-dom to the next generation of All Whites at the club’s junior holiday coaching clinic at Jubilee Park South this Wednesday. Richmond is running the holiday programme from Monday to Thurs-day this week and Jeremy is making the trip from Wellington, where he is based with the A-League team Phoenix, back to his other home ground at Jubilee Park. Club president Stu Reid says Jeremy is the club’s ambassador and always tries to attend one of the junior holi-day coaching programmes every

year. “It’s lucky for us that the Phoenix are out (of the A-League play-offs) so he can come down this week,” Stu says. “He’s such a good role model and he really enjoys working with the young players.”

Stu says Jeremy will be at the clinic from 9am to 12pm and will be stay-ing at the ground for 45 minutes af-terwards to sign autographs.Junior players can still register for the last few days of the holiday pro-gramme by emailing [email protected].

The snapper still haven’t quite moved north even though the tem-perature has dropped, and are still around in Tasman Bay. There are a few large models still being caught in deeper water as well as fish up to 50cm being caught around Haul-ashore Island and the Boulder Bank. Cable Bay, Pepin Island and Delaware Bay are all still fishing well, anything from gurnard, blue cod to terakihi, kahawai and snap-per. The sounds are starting to fish re-ally well with some excellent big late autumn snapper being landed. Beatrix Bay has fired up and Ke-nepuru while still a bit hit and miss will produce some stunning fish throughout May. Unfortunately the spikey dogs have also moved into the neighbourhood and taken up residence, along with their partners in crime, the razor gang. If your gear can survive these unwanted pests there is definitely some great fishing on offer. The kingfish have not really arrived at Stephen’s passage just yet but make sure you are well prepared with your gear to take on these beasts of the sea. Get into your local tackle shop and spend as much money as you can afford to make sure your gear will enable you to land these very pow-erful fish. Groper have been caught in the last couple of weeks out off Stephens Is-land, and of course there are plenty of blue cod to be had anywhere along the coastline. With another week still left in the holidays, this can be a great time to get the kids out fishing. Even though the weather is colder it is generally much more settled with little wind and slight seas and can

be a great source of entertainment. Taking kids fishing doesn’t neces-sarily require a boat and can be done from a wharf or beach. It can be for as little or as long as you like depending on your pa-tience and keeping the kids occu-pied. A hand line, a sabiki rig with a small sinker and bait bullets are all that is required and can be bought at the Warehouse. I’d recommend a knife and also small bucket, as little kids love to show off their catch when they get home. Take the camera if you want to release the fish.Kids usually aren’t too worried if they don’t catch anything but enjoy the process of trying to catch a fish. Whatever the outcome of a day’s fishing it always comes with plenty of laughs, can cost you nothing but provide stories and pictures that kids will always treasure. Give it a go you might be pleasantly surprised if you’ve never fished with kids before, at how excited they get at the prospect of catching a fish.

Nelson Rowing Club’s success-ful season was capped off on Sunday with the announce-ment that two club members have been selected for the New Zealand Junior Rowing team. Waimea College’s Sean Du-cray and Nelson College’s Olly Stephens will race in the quad-ruple sculls at the World Junior Rowing Champs in Hamburg, Germany in August. News of their selection came after a weeklong trial at Lake Kara-piro. “We’ve all had a hard week,” says Sean. “It’s been pretty close; the com-petition was so close they were still testing us on Sunday morn-ing. It was pretty hard work.” The NZ Junior team will as-semble at Lake Karapiro at the Rowing New Zealand High Performance Centre for six weeks from June 8 to train as a squad. While they are training they will continue their studies at

St Peters School in Cambridge and be living in the Rob Wad-dell Lodge on the shores of Lake Karapiro, where the New Zealand rowing team is based. The World Junior Rowing

Championships will be held from August 6-10 this year where the two Nelson rowers will be competing against 600 top junior athletes from over 50 nations around the world.

Loss is tough to take for Waimea seniorsWaimea Old Boys are look-ing for a more consistent performance when they take on Central in their Tasman Trophy rugby match at Jubi-lee Park this Saturday, after their frustrating 24-28 loss to Marist last week.Senior A coach Mark Milne says “we played awful for 40 minutes and very well for 40 minutes” against Marist and will need to perform for the full 80 minutes to win against Blenheim team Central in the second round of the Tasman Trophy. “We can’t afford to play below par for long periods like we did against Marist,” Mark says. “Our lack of consistency has been an issue throughout the year and we need to improve in that area.”Mark says he is expecting a tough battle up front this Sat-

urday with Central having a big, physical forward pack. He also predicts Central will be stronger than last year, after recruiting well during the off-season.“I don’t know too much about them but most of the Blenhe-im teams are usually tough up front. But I’m happy with the way our own forward pack is going and I’m sure they’ll be up for it.”Mark says the team is enjoying the Tasman Trophy phase of the competition because they play so many different teams.“It’s exciting because we get to play against different play-ers and different teams which makes it more challenging. It can get a bit predictable play-ing the same teams all the time in a small competition,” he says. The game kicks off at 3pm.

Bs win first trophy, ready for the nextWaimea Old Boys forward Cailan Gibson drives the ball up against Marist at Tahu-nanui on Saturday. Photo: Barry Whitnall/www.shuttersport.co.nz.

Waimea Old Boys has already won its first trophy of the year, but its division two coach Wayne Bateman is hungry for more. The division two side claimed the first round trophy after going undefeated against the “town” teams. This weekend they’ll face the only other unbeaten side, and winner of the “country” round one trophy, Collingwood. The game will be the second of the com-bined division two competition after Waimea won its first against Marist in Ta-

hunanui on Saturday. Tries to Luke Thelin, Todd Brodie and two to lock Unag Penitani, gave Waimea a bo-nus point, while Taylor Simpson-Brown kicked one conversion in the 22-10 win.Wayne says the team has been performing well.“We’ve been good in the forwards and our backs have also been going well, so I’m pretty happy.”He says taking on a Collingwood team re-nowned for its strong pack will be a chal-

lenge but he’s also weary of its backline.“Evidently they have a good backline so we’ll probably take them on up front and then look for holes out wide later on.”Waimea are hosting the heavy weight clash and Wayne says that will be a big advan-tage but he’s hoping for a good crowd to

help the side assert dominance over one of the top contenders for the title.“Playing over in Collingwood is really tough so we want to make it equally tough for them coming to play in Richmond. We want to come away with a big win. But we know it will probably be the toughest game of the year for us so far. Collingwood, Ri-waka and Wanderers will be the teams to beat.”The game kicks off at 1.15pm at Jubilee Park this Saturday.
