Porsche 918 Spyder
With the new Porsche 918 Spyder, the German car maker created a new milestone that will lead the way for the next models. Porsche combines innovation with know-how and thus represents a true supercar.
The 918 Spyder is the direct successor to the outrages 605hp Carrera GT and is limited to only 918 models. The good news: They are not all sold yet. The bad news: The price starts at $845,000 – which is actually inexpensive compare to Ferrari and McLaren.
The main power comes from a V8 engine with 4.6 liter displacement. With an 887 horsepower from two electric motors, the all-wheel drive hybrid is still light but very stable. One electric motor drives the rear axle, the other the front axle.
The plug-in capability is one of the Spyder’s best tricks. This car can go up to 18 miles on electric power alone. The 918 Spyder can also do 72 miles per gallon and is almost a third more fuel efficient than the Toyota Prius.
Needless to say, the new Porsche Spyder is a sports-hybrid for the rich. Fortunately, just a glimpse at the car’s arching rear end and voluptuous fenders is a treat for the rest of us.

Ferrari LaFerrari
With a system output of 963 horsepower, LaFerrari wanted to create the Nordschleife lap in under seven minutes. This does not sound impossible, since the Italian is the most powerful hybrid of the three super athletes. The 120 kW / 163 hp electric motor is not intended as a single drive, but serves both as a power boost for the 6.2-liter 12-cylinder engine and the total power output.
Like the 918 Spyder, the LaFerrari is a hybrid; however, unlike the Porsche, the Ferrari will not be able to drive on electric power alone. According to the manufacturer, the LaFerrari swallows about 14 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
Only 499 LaFerraris are scheduled to be built and each model has already been sold at $1.4 million. The chances of seeing, yet alone owning a LaFerrari, are super slim, unless you find a place to rent a sports car. A sports car rental in Los Angeles, New York or Miami could make this possible.

McLaren P1
Like the 918 Spyder, the McLaren P1 is designed as a plug-in hybrid. It can travel over 6 miles on electricity before the twin-turbo V8 steps in. This 903-horsepower gasoline-electric hybrid achieves only 217 mph and can go from 0 to 186 mph 5 seconds quicker than the McLaren F1 of the 90s.
Only 375 McLaren’s are scheduled to be produced, and each will sell for more than $1 million. Still, we hope McLaren will one day utilize its hybrid technology in more affordable vehicles for the masses.
