by Ego
...AND WHAT YOU CAN DOABOUT IT
Hi!
My name is Megan Leatherman, and I'm an HRConsultant and Career Coach who focuses on how to

For the purposes of our conversation today, I'lldefine "ego" as your survival instinct. It's what keepsyou safe. If you were lost in the middle of an ocean, your ego would make sure you swam back to safety.

FIRST, I SHOULD DEFINE "EGO"
Thanks to our animal nature, we have complex sensorysystems that pick up on any hint of danger, including social
isolation or rejection.
Our ego cares A LOT about what other people think.

DEFINING "EGO"
We do everything we can to be safe, including:
Staying in relationships that aren't good for us
Putting up barriers to keep other people out
Staying in jobs that are the wrong fit
Never taking risks for fear of failure or rejection

WHEN WE'RE TRAPPED BY OUREGOS
Many of us are shackled by our egos, which
means...the organizations that we make up are
also egodriven.

EGO-DRIVEN ORGANIZATIONS
FEAR
FEAR
RESISTANCE
PANIC
UNEASE
When an organization cares more about staying
safe and surviving than it does growing and
thriving, it's been trapped by Ego.

EGO-DRIVEN ORGANIZATIONS
Decisions are made out of fear
There's rampant infighting
There's never enough (money, time, people, etc.)

3 SIGNS YOUR ORGANIZATION ISSHACKLED BY EGO:
Here are some things you might hear in an
organization trapped by ego:
"Well, that's the way we've always done it."
"Let's do Plan A it's a surer bet, and then the
board won't bother us anymore."
"We need to fire her she's fishing to start a
worker's comp claim."

SIGN 1: FEAR-BASED DECISIONS
In organizations like these, competition is valued
over collaboration, which breeds a lot of conflict.
No one feels secure in their job or relationships, so
they lash out, trying to protect whatever
ownership or autonomy they have.
There's often a lot of violent language used, such
as "war," "territory," "threat," or "battle."

SIGN 2: RAMPANT IN-FIGHTING
In an egotrapped organization, the accepted
mindset is that resources are scarce.
If this is true, then that means you have to scrape
together and hoard whatever resources you can
grab.
Everyone assumes that there's just never enough
time to get things done, money for projects, or
"talent" in the pipeline.www.meganleatherman.com
SIGN 3: SCARCITY MENTALITY
Not all companies operate from the place of the
ego some have found healthy ways to pair their
ego instincts with its counterpart:
the soul.

THERE'S ANOTHER WAY...
Now, I know it's kind of taboo to talk about our
souls in a businessy presentation, but stay with
me.
Our souls are what push us to transcend our fears.
They call out to us, drawing us toward what is in
our highest good individually and as
organizations.

"SOUL"? WHAT?
Your soul is the deeper part of you that knows
knows who you are, what you need, and what
you're meant to do in your life.
If you've ever made changes that were hard but
ultimately got you closer to who you truly are, I bet
it was because you listened to your soul.

YOU HAVE ONE, I PROMISE
When we can transcend our egos and tap into our
deeper knowing our souls we can transform
ourselves and our organizations.

WHEN YOU TAP IN...
When our egos are in a healthy balance with our
souls, we:
Are more comfortable taking risks
Can trust that our needs will be met
Remember who we are
Can be still and present enough to hear inner and
outer wisdom

WHEN YOU TAP IN...
Your intuition is one easy and accessible way for you
to tap into the wisdom of your soul.
Intuition isn't something we talk about very much in
our organizations, but it's about time that we did.
Our intuitions can guide us to make better decisions,
strengthen our teams, and work in a way that is
sustainable and healthy.
