He’s back home in Larisa now studying for entrance into the Greek Air Force. His assessment was not terribly hopeful: “The crisis is visible everywhere; the government is reducing people's salaries to an extent that they can't buy anything except food and fundamentals. A normal coffee costs 4 Euros (20 zs) and gas costs 2 Euros per litre. In addition, the government raised taxes to 23% on food and reduced salaries even more. People can't live. Kids can’t go out because they don’t have money. If you want to go to the cinema you have to pay 9 Euros (36zs). Unemployment has risen by 40% in the last year because companies fire more and more people they can’t pay.” Anthony also stated that the source of the problem is 20 years of political corruption, with state leaders funneling tax money towards their own lavish lifestyles rather than the people they represent. So can politics also be part of the solution? On September 29 th , German lawmakers voted to approve the expanded powers for a European bailout fund. Chancellor Angela Merkel said that it is critical to ensure economic stability. The bill was approved by a vote of 523 to 85. This in turn helped boost European stocks, albeit temporarily. In July, a previous agreement with Greece on a second bailout was set, but it might be renegotiated because of the findings of the International Monetary Fund. The IMF inspection team abruptly left Greece at the beginning of the month when it seemed the country had fallen off targets that were conditions of the 2010 bailout. Just this October, the IMF issued a debt report that stated Greek officials still weren’t doing enough to reign in their deficit. This report sent the European stock markets into a free-fall. Such instability is the heart of the problem in the EU currency zone, an economic unity that is facing its first major test of political unity. The EU Crisis To Save or Not to Save Greece by Daniela Domachowska

We keep hearing about the crisis in Greece In the news they speak of the threat of bankruptcy increased taxes and the rapid increase in prices of commodities like food and gas Salaries are decreased People are laid off The country has been borrowing money from Europe for many years Now itrsquos struggling to avoid collapse The crisis presents an omen to the sustainability of the EU Will other countries like Spain Portugal and Ireland follow suit Is the European bailout fund the only way to help

I asked former IAS student Anthony Peteinaris for his views on the situation Hersquos back home in Larisa now studying for entrance into the Greek Air Force His assessment was not terribly hopeful

ldquoThe crisis is visible everywhere the government is reducing peoples salaries to an extent that they cant buy anything except food and fundamentals A normal coffee costs 4 Euros (20 zs) and gas costs 2 Euros per litre In addition the government raised taxes to 23 on food and reduced salaries even more People cant live Kids canrsquot go out because they donrsquot have money If you want to go to the cinema you have to pay 9 Euros (36zs) Unemployment has risen by 40 in the last year because companies fire more and more people they canrsquot payrdquo

Anthony also stated that the source of the problem is 20 years of political corruption with state leaders funneling tax money towards their own lavish lifestyles rather than the people they represent So can politics also be part of the solution

On September 29th German lawmakers voted to approve the expanded powers for a European bailout fund Chancellor Angela Merkel said that it is critical to ensure economic stability The bill was approved by a vote of 523 to 85 This in turn helped boost European stocks albeit temporarily

In July a previous agreement with Greece on a second bailout was set but it might be renegotiated because of the findings of the International Monetary Fund The IMF inspection team abruptly left Greece at the beginning of the month when it seemed the country had fallen off targets that were conditions of the 2010 bailout Just this October the IMF issued a debt report that stated Greek officials still werenrsquot doing enough to reign in their deficit This report sent the European stock markets into a free-fall Such instability is the heart of the problem in the EU currency zone an economic unity that is facing its first major test of political unity

To raise its revenues Greece proposed additional measures such as including a property tax that will be charged on electricity bills The move has caused many protests in Athens Most recently Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou proposed $88 billion of austerity measures including a plan to create a ldquolabor reserverdquo that would push 30000 public employees out of their jobs For a country that already has 16 unemployment Irsquom sure that resolution will be met with more public unrest

Expanding the powers for the European bailout fund will move forward if six other Euro area countries approve it in the next few weeks Germany has voted for expanding the powers and increasing the size of the European bailout fund also know as the European Financial Stability Facility If six other countries approve on the changes accepted by the Euro leaders in July the lending capacity of the bailout fund would increase to $600 billion EU leaders were concerned that the original fund would not have enough money to assist a large economy such as Spain therefore increasing it was necessary

One notable resister has been Finland who made recent demands that Greece post collateral in exchange for a second round of bailout funds And the biggest resistance might be coming from the German voters who are increasingly unhappy about new demands on their pocketbooks

It is apparent that Greece needs more assistance than the leaders of the EU initially anticipated Meanwhile the people endure the consequences As Anthony told me in his last message

ldquoIts unbearable at the moment New measures will be applied in 2012 which will make people suffer even morerdquo

Germany is set to commit to Greece as it went through a series of sacrifices in the last decades to get its economy in order At the same time many people in Germany are convinced that committing more money to Greece is a hopeless case and that the country should default on its debts Some people in Merkelrsquos junior coalition partner the Free Democrats have suggested that Greece should leave the Euro which in Merkelrsquos eyes would doom the EU

So the struggle to save Greece is really a struggle to save the EU It is futile to place blame on anyone at this point Many people had influence in the collapse of the Greek economy

and pointing fingers will only lead to more scandal and salacious headlines What the country and its people need is a long term solution Its fate determines our own

The Rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union has been a vital factor in the history of the EU The first in 1958 was led by Belgium 53 years later two important Central European countries take this prestigious seat The ldquodwa bratankirdquo Poles and Magyars are in the seats of the greats managing the upcoming issues of the EU 13In the first half of 2011 Hungary served its presidency and thus Hungarian officials in Brussels were the beating heart of the EU With its motto ldquoStrong Europerdquo the Hungarian presidency worked hard in achieving agreements on vital policies successful acts flexible troubleshooting and a problem free tenure so that at the end of the term Europe would be stronger The presidency couldnrsquot have worked out better

13The number one priority of the Hungarian presidency was the accession negotiations with Croatiarsquos joining of the EU Both sides put a lot of effort in the conclusion project in which Croatia could fulfill all the necessary requirements at the end of the six months 13The council also dealt with an important minority issue and unveiled a united Roma StrategymdashldquoAn EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies up to 2020rdquo The strategy includes the call for better distribution of EU funds on minority groups improvement of the Romarsquos living situation and the securing of their individual rights 13Specific regional agreements were reached during the six months as well An example is the Danube Strategy which states that all the countries of the Danube region are willing to show their commitment towards the achievement of sustainable economic growth This includes the creation of jobs improvement of the Danubersquos infrastructure the use of more environmental friendly navigation and the security of sustainable energy A bold order for bold times13The presidency also faced the unexpected difficulties related to the Arab Spring Throughout the turmoil the Hungarian embassy in Tripoli stayed on maximum work power and organized evacuation processes As well both the Minister and State Secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary were among the very first EU officials to visit Egypt after the revolution

Following Hungaryrsquos successes the Polish presidency launched its term in July One of its first steps was hosting the European Culture Congress with an inaugural lecture by renown sociologist Zygmunt Bauman A complete list of cultural events sponsored by the presidency can be found at the following website wwwcultureplwebenglishcppp

We look forward to following Polandrsquos lead for the remainder of 2011 Who knows what surprises are in store But one thing is clear these two closely related Central European countries are back at the helm and have only good things to offer the EU

15th of September 2011 920 Sitting outside the office listening to some Led Zeppelin tracks nothing could have bothered my mind and I mean nothing Mr Uden stepped out and posted the voting results on the wall I looked Just out of curiosity Alex and Sebastian 21 Agnieszka and Maria 77 A smashing victory that I knew was coming all along Mr Uden added a few words of comfort with a weak smile on his face Right away I thought it would be nice if I informed Maria of the results She slowly came down the stairs during a break Without an exchange of words I nodded and clapped my hands and blushing she went away No grief no sorrow They had the upper hand in this game and that is why I wish them all the best in fulfilling the hard tasks that await them I know what itrsquos like Irsquove been through it What about the campaign itself I have seen better But this could have been due the early date of the elections There had been some intrigue when the candidates initially gathered their signatures The original presidential teams were Agnieszka and Anthony from the 12th grade followed by myself and Alex and Maria and Nicole from the 11th Due unseen political circumstances Anthony and Nicole dropped out of the race the latter never even submitting their candidacy form to Mr Johnsonrsquos desk So Agnieszka decided to join forces with Maria The presidential race was on

For some time the corridors were quiet Silence before the storm someone might have said The day prior the elections Alex brought in ominous black campaign leaflets followed by a cardboard ldquomerdquo standing in front of the office Agnieszka and Maria were nowhere in sight I had no lessons at the time so left for lunch Well when I returned strolling the corridors the chaos was unleashed Aga and Maria came in rolls of paper stuffed into their bags They turned out to be stickers Hundreds and hundreds of stickers that they distributed amongst a crowd of roaring ecstatic children Very quickly they managed to cover up most the free space in the halls with their slogan ldquoThumbs Uprdquo The debates took place in the evening The atmosphere was dense with expectations questions and some boredom Agnieszka and Maria presented a well prepared presentation of their goals and aims Two ideas that met with a lot of approval were the formation of a DJ club and a year end school prom The crowd cheered them As soon as Alex and myself came to the podium we were hit with a wave of ldquoboorsquosrdquo Alex tried to put in a few jokes but our ship was sinking The debates were spread across two lessons for both the older and younger students Again Aga and Maria showed their determination All we could do was scream for help as waves of despair flooded over us It was quite clear who had one the debate And so here we are Aga and Maria are the new school presidents I even gave them my vote much to the dismay of my running mate But I think that was a good thing to do Everyone will agree that Aga and Maria will do their best to make this school year the best yet Once again I want to congratulate Agnieszka and Maria Im sure they will do a great job and I wish them all the best

The Secret Life of Principal Steven Johnson an interview by Alex Rutczyński

We all know Principal Johnson as a man who looks good in a blue suit and commands discipline in his classroom But how many know him as a rock lsquonrsquo roll singing chord strumming guitar hero The fact is Mr Johnson has been growing as a vocalist and musician for many years now in Warsaw and I decided it was high time to get the full scoop for the IAS community

When and why did you first start playing guitar How did it happen for youI started playing guitar when I was 17 I was at a camp near Zakopane and I heard a Polish kid playing Stairway to Heaven on a Spanish guitar and I just had to learn it Two weeks later I could play it (not perfectly mind you) When I returned to the States the desire grew to wanting to play for people and make them feel good Thats been my motivation to play and write music ever since

What was your first true musical experience It must be a nice memoryI remember clearly the music my father listened to The most influential was the work of Paul Simon His chord progressions lyrics and harmonies lulled me to sleep on many cross-country trips from the time I was an infant through my teenage years I still remember being in the family station wagon and drifting in and out of deep dreamless sleep to songs like Sound of Silence and The Boxer This was my first experience of the powerful and emotional connection that is possible with music Paul Simon is still one of my favorite artists to this day

What can you tell us about playing in front of a live audience

Playing live is amazing Period Its really all about the energy cycle - when an artist sends energy to an audience through in this case music and the audience sends energy back to the artist through cheering applause or dancingmoshing When the energy cycle is at its peak theres nothing like it The feeling is hard to describe but maybe comparing it to skydiving might work just because of the adrenaline rush It is also intensified by the number of people who respond Can you imagine how U2 must have felt playing their last tour 72 million fans screaming their heads off all around the world For me it feels incredible just playing for a room of friends

What is the preparation like for a professional musician

Ive been playing a lot of solo gigs and duet concerts with Diana Dąbkowska (DD) our PreK teacher from last year who has now gone into a life of full-time music I also practice once a week with my band Runaway Train and I have one vocal lesson a week with a back-up singer for the Scorpions Overall Ive played guitar just about every day for the past 15 years and I still continue to practice and try to improve I dont consider it practice Its far too much fun to call it practicing I prefer the term jamming which means playing music for its pure enjoyment Some people are born with natural musical talent Other people have to work hard for it I have had to work for it

Can you tell us a little about your Warsaw band

Runaway Train was formed two years ago as a cover band Originally called TIP we played venues such as Jimmy Bradleyrsquos Hard Rock Cafe and even Stodoła We changed our name to Runaway Train

when we decided to create our own music Runaway Train is a mash-up of all the styles and influences of its individual musicians I get my inspiration from acoustic rock folk and even classic country music Our electric guitarist gets his from heavy metal and hard rock Our bassist loves funk and RampB Our drummer is a chameleon and can fit any style Diana specializes in szanty (sailor songs) most adopted from traditional Irish music Put all of those genres of music into a big pot mix them up and youve got Runaway Train Our 11 song demo should be out in November and were already talking with Hard Rock Cafe about doing their New Years Eve show

How do you balance the life of a rock star with that of a high school principal Do you see any connection between the two lives

Haha Connection hmmmm Im not exactly sure but with both Im in front of people using my voice Maybe another connection is that I teach English and write song lyrics I certainly dont dress the same for a school day as I do for a concert Balance is easy since the gigs are always in the evening or on weekends so the two jobs never conflict I guess I do get ideas for new songs from things that I see or hear in IAS so Id have to say that the students are always a limitless source of inspiration for me as well )

Thanks for sharing Mr Johnson Wersquoll come to see you playhellipas soon as wersquore all legal

Each day in the news we hear that someone was killed a bomb blew up and the world will soon end Various idiots claim to be prophets and each year is to be the Apocalypse But life goes on The world did not end in the fire of 1425 nor the turn of Y2K No disaster looks like itrsquos gonna do But I feel the end is near because a part of culture which has accompanied mankind for half a century dies every day Itrsquos the death of rock lsquonrsquo roll

A man in flashing light switches the controls An awful sound the ill child of post-industrial culture shakes the stadium People dance mechanically They praise the new god of the sound mixer Cacophony rises Thatrsquos how rock dies Guitar gods thrown off their Olympus

Some say techno and pop pose no threat to rock They do pose The new replaces the old and the old bands have no worthy successors There has yet been born another Jimi Hendrix Meanwhile techno is junk from the beginning DJs may have skill in using the mixer But if you learn the mixer with no knowledge of an instrument your skill is limited A guitarist will play electric acoustic or classic A pianist will use any instrument with a keyboard If you asked a DJ to perform at an unplugged concert what would it be like The DJ has no acoustic equivalent OK the rhythm you can play on the drums assuming one is not only ldquobanginrsquo on the bongos like a chimpanzeerdquo (credit to Dire Straits) But if a DJ cannot play an instrument then sorry He does not make music he manipulates it No money for nothing

My plea Save rock because the next generation will look on the Strat and Les Paul as they were elk horns hanging from above the fireplace Bands such as ACDC Led Zeppelin Dire Straits and the

Rolling Stones will be as distant in meaning as Mozart or Chopin Classical music is already dead jazz withers and blues and country balance on the fringe of a cultural abyss Must rock fall down too

Donrsquot let the soulless control board replace the guitar DJs do not create music They mix up what others create It was not a minor DJ who wrote ldquoMoney for Nothingrdquo or ldquoStairway to Heavenrdquo These were written by musicians who mastered their instruments in longer than it takes to read a manual David Guetta co-fonder of Gum productions said that his ldquonew sound is inspired by rockrdquo Thatrsquos like giving high suspension and giant wheels to a Fiat 126p Maluch and saying itrsquos inspired by the Range Rover More spoilers splitters and a giant exhaust wonrsquot bring it any closer to a Ferrari

I canrsquot imagine a world where instrumentalists become mixers and vocalists Justin Bieber And virtuoso A reference to David Guetta not Mark Knopfler Angus Young or Jimmy Page Irsquom sure this column will gain fewer supporters than those whorsquod like to see my head on a tray Maybe for insulting the gods of the sound mixer Ill be burning in hell But if hell wants fans of rock then I dont want to imagine heaven

Trials of a Teenage Vegetarian by Oliwia Budny

You enter the lunch line in the middle of a hard day Hungry angry and tired you stand over the counter gazing at a tempting hot meal pork chop well-seasoned in a crispy batter Those before you ask for extra gravy Meanwhile you inspect the choice of salads and hope the soup isnrsquot żurek

ldquoHey which one is the main course The carrots or the beatsrdquo the student behind you jokes

You move on without a word What do they know Not much especially how and from where that pork got on their platehellip

Vegetarianmdashstrange and silly man Or perhaps a more conscious or sensitive being In Poland it is estimated that there are already about 2 million vegetarians These are mostly young people who are aware of how much suffering is entailed in eating meat Some are able to reject any products of animal origin both in food and clothing They also renounce products such as eggs milk or honey Theyrsquore called an even more silly namemdashvegan

So how does it work How does one go from being a normal cutlet devouring kid to an ethically minded eater Well vegetarians believe that animals suffer and should be treated with humanity They oppose the killing of animals on farms and excessive production of meat for profit Many believe that they should not eat meat for the good of all living creatures Buddhists and Hindus do not eat meat as it is considered healthier for the body mind and spirit

Im an example that even in Poland you can live without meat I have been a vegetarian for two years and have met with many opinions on the subject Most people have tried at all costs to prove that my attitude is ridiculous Idiocy in my opinion is to call yourself a friend of animals and at the same time not respect their lives Whats different about a dog and a pig No dog lover would consider eating his pet Why do we imagine that a pig is something less A pigrsquos intelligence is higher than a dogrsquos itrsquos even higher than a three year old childrsquos

To get on your plate that pig travels a short and cruel path Most animals are born without experience of nature and freedom Farm animals are given steroids from the onset of life Their body weight increases over the limits of their endurance Chickens live in fear crushed upon one another Hensrsquo beaks are cut off so they wont do each other harm Their feet snap due obesity and they are unable to move Pigs are disposed of by shock or struck in the head with a heavy object At the largest slaughterhouse in America pigs are crushed four to six at a time in a splendidly designed machine

I do not feel better than them I am ashamed for what our species is causing the other Such suffering is not worth that warm hot meal

An Idiotrsquos Guide to Body Language by Agnieszka Kaczkowska

Did you ever notice that you shake your foot while impatiently waiting for the lunch break or avert your eyes when telling a fib These signals can tell others your thoughts and feelings whether you want them to or not Thats why a quick course in body language is useful ndash not only will you be better able to read the dishonest ticks of your friends but you can also avoid being read yourself

Below are common body signals and their meanings but be aware that they all depend on the context in which they are employed

Did you notice all the signs for deception It seems our bodies are especially expressive when we lie And what about lacking confidence Did you ever wonder if changing your habits could change your mindset Well it can Here are some tips to improve your body language and thus yourself

Laugh and smile ndash a smiling face not only puts others in a better mood but also improves yoursSlow down and breathe ndash people who move and do things fast look stressed and uncomfortable Just relax and be more gentle ndash concentrating on your breath helpsShow interest ndash when you listen (or pretend to listen )) try bending towards the speaker turning your body towards him tilting your head and nodding The speaker will feel noticed and understood and therefore closer to youKeep eye contact ndash its the most important signal of both attention and confidence even if sometimes it might seem uncomfortableSpeak slowly and confidently ndash with a calm but confident voice Dont let emotions take control over you And remember the less you talk the more importance and attention your words will gainConcentrate on your bodys actions ndash make sure you are standing straight in a relaxed position not crossing arms or legs no fidgeting or any other signs of discomfort

Your body language can affect your emotions ndash this is the law of cause and effect Cross your arms and look down to feel more depressed smile and jump up to feel happy Many people claim they cross their arms because it makes them comfortable ndash of course when you feel defensive this is the position youll be most comfortable in Once you are aware of this connection you can use it to control and affect your actual emotions

You cant always be sure what body language means in each situation But it provides very useful clues which with proper understanding can make your life much easier

Biting lipsnails nervous worried Leaning in closer interest comfortableDilated pupils (sexual) attraction or stress Looking off to left lyingFast breathing stressed anxious or angry Nodding interest understandingFidgeting bored or impatient No eye contact lack of confidence lyingHands behind head arrogance superiority Shaking of legs a sign of stress (or ADHD )) Hands on hips defiance Showing palms of hands telling the truth nothing to hideHands on table in agreement Stroking of chin thinking in thoughtHead rested on hand bored disinterested Tapping foot impatient or nervousLeaning away discomfort with the situation Tilting head to either side interestedTouching handfaceneck while talkinghelliphelliphelliphelliphelliphellipLYING

Echoing on the backFor once moreCircles of blackDrags us bothJust as once heardJust as once warnedThoughtlessly we walk

Or so the rain would let us knowDrop by drop would she flowReminiscing alikeSurviving the droughtThe thoughts tied rightlike a speechless bard

Heavy clankingBoots bindingSmogged in mudGravity unknownGrasping aroundFor what seems to be goneI dance and tossI buy and biteGrinding the coal between my teethI lay back and let it bedark and sadScent of lies

I raise my spiritsTo dieTo diePrepared for gainIn vain to flyI wave my flagI sharpen the bladesI paint myself in the moans of the night

Draped in gasolineBurnt from head to toeA lonely angel watches from aboveThe wings clipped downHarnessed by goldThe sinless skinsoaks in blood

I watch her fallGrace entwinedThe ivy garden welcomes her scarlet tearsThrough the eyes of a childDeep as the wellConveys a thought in which we all dwell

I sing of warsI cry for bloodThe lust for the worldto thrill me once moreDispersing from my eyesas the breath leaves my sightLeaves me thinkingWas it right

I shall fightFor my pastNot present in thy futureLocked in infinite grays Shades of greenShades of clues

Wreaks with solemn venturesWails of abandoned desiresI sweep aroundScavenge the lawOn this filthy battlefield

5th Element A Review of Hip-hop Culture in Warsaw by Mateusz Gradowski

Dear reader this page is dedicated to hip-hop culture If you are not into hip-hop retreat If you got through the first sentence Irsquom impressed And since Irsquove got your attention here are my 3 Top 3 lists of the month Leggorsquo

BEST CDS

ldquoCztery i Poacutełrdquo by Łona i WebberŁona and Webber had made 3 and frac12 albums Each became a must for rap fans Now itrsquos time to make place on your CD shelf for ldquoFour and a halfrdquo There is NO poor track on this CD Webber provides simple but funky instrumentals and Łonarsquos lyrics made me give

them 5 out of 4 and frac12 stars for the album

ldquoHurraprdquo by HurragunDo you hear the bass drum and snapping snare and the dirty sounds straight from vinyl Here we have the great return of Boom Bap to Poland What else to say lsquoŁapy w goacuterersquo for Hurragun for keeping it real

ldquoZ Ostatniej Ławkirdquo by Solar BiałasTwo young MCrsquos from Warsaw well known to the freestyle and underground scene finally made their legal CD Either you love their style or hate it I personally love the sharp jokes made here

BEST FESTIVALS

Prosto to Bemowo FestivalMCrsquos from the Prosto label and graffiti jam made me go lsquoprostorsquo to Bemowo and enjoy this festival on September 10th It was a great event BUT many people couldnrsquot get in because there were not enough tickets Fortunately even far from the scene people had fun Thatrsquos the spirit Already waiting for the next editions

WBW Wielka Bitwa WarszawskaThis yearly event features beat-box and freestyle battles Last year was on very poor level but the freestyle scene has changed Want to know how it goes this year Just follow the web wwwpopkillerpl or the WBW official website wwwwbwpl

Woodcamprsquos 10th BirthdayOrganized by Rap History Warsaw itrsquos everything you need skateboarding (Woodamp is a skateboarding camp) Pariasrsquos first gig in Warsaw and an after-party organized by Steez and Anusz under the sign of DJ Premier and Pete Rock Music No matter what you did on October 1st it was less interesting than what happened at the 1500M2 Club

BEST CLIPS

Apathy feat Celph Titled DJ Premiere ldquoStop What Ya Doinrdquo hellip really makes us stop and watch Especially when yoursquore in the mood to destroy things

Wrooclin Dodgers feat Małgorzata Leśniak ldquoWrooclin By Nightrdquo enjoyable video with great photos of Wrocław

Łona i Webber ldquoTo Nic Nie Znaczyrdquo and ldquoNie Pytaj Nasrdquo hellip the music is on a totally different level Both were made in Szczecin and it makes perfect background

Check out these clips to wet your appetite for more hip-hop in Warsaw Til next time lsquoKeep it uprsquo

Prophecy poem by Janny

I sing of warsI cry for bloodThe lust for the worldto thrill me once moreDispersing from my eyesas the breath leaves my sightLeaves me thinkingWas it right

I shall fightFor my pastNot present in thy futureLocked in infinite grays Shades of greenShades of clues

Wreaks with solemn venturesWails of abandoned desiresI sweep aroundScavenge the lawOn this filthy battlefield
